Beware The Coupon Nazis!

I had another run in with a coupon Nazi today (this time at Safeway), and I want to remind my fellow coupon users to stand up for your rights! Know your coupon lingo and know the stores policy! If you have a legit coupon, do not let a store clerk bully you into not using the coupon!

*One coupon per purchase means one coupon per item purchased! This does not mean one coupon for your entire shopping cart!

*One coupon per transaction means one coupon per trip through the check out lane.

*One coupon per person per day means exactly that.

*You CAN use Buy One Get One Free coupons on Buy One Get One Free store promotions, getting you BOTH items for free!

*At most stores, you can use a store coupon (printed in their sales flyer, will say Store Coupon up at top) AND a manufacturer's coupon.

*Some stores, such as Grocery Outlet, Big Lots, and Save-A-Lot, only accept their store coupons as they consider their prices to be low.

*Most stores do allow coupons printed from the internet. I suggest visiting your stores favorite website and searching for their coupon policies, and then printing the information up. You can always send an email to customer service asking for a copy of it, if you can't find it online. Here's a couple:

~For Acme, click here
~For Wegman's, click here
~For Walmart, click here

***Watch all items being rung up and make sure they are ringing up at the correct price. If you notice something is up, speak up immediately! Don't be afraid to ask for a price check! Count your coupons before you hand them over to the clerk. Make sure each one is taken off! And don't forget to check your receipt one last time before you leave the store. Don't let a store get away with overcharging you (and everyone else!)

All great tips! Luckily, I don't usually have a problem but I tend to just back down and take my coupon back when there's an issue. I need to get better about fighting for myself when I know I'm using the coupon as intended.

Thanks for posting this! A lot of people let cashiers bully them, myself included. Personally, I want to understand why some of them are like that. As a cashier, coupons don't affect them. They get paid by the hour, not by how much people spend. Plus, if a manager is called over, they are usually siding with the customer and sometimes end up taking a coupon that they might not normally take!

I used to avoid the hassle too, thinking it wasn't worth it. Then I realized even if it was just a 50 cent coupon, it was the principle of it! I hope that by my standing up for myself, someone else doesn't get hassled over a legit coupon because the clerk remembers their run in with me. ;)

I think a lot of stores don't educate the clerks other than to tell them to watch the expiration dates, thus the clerks don't realize the stores are reimbursed the coupon amount plus the handling fee. A coupon is advertising for the both the store and the manufacturer!
