Preparedness Tuesday: Smoke Alarms

It's Preparedness Tuesday - each Tuesday I post one thing you can do to help prepare you and your family for everyday disasters - be it job loss, bad weather (between being stuck in the middle of hurricane season, and the coming colder winter we're predicted), or even that ugly recession they keep talking about (blech!)

This week I am talking about smoke alarms. I cannot believe the amount of sad stories I have heard in the last weeks that may have had a better outcome had the batteries been working on their smoke alarms!

It is recommended that every six months (usually on the days we change the clocks) you change the batteries on your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms. When was the last time you checked to see if yours was working? If the answer is you can't remember, please step aside from your computer right now and go change the batteries, and test to make sure they are working. Please!

You should have a smoke detector near every bedroom, as well as in the kitchen and living room.

While you are checking for the alarms, check the batteries in your flashlights. Make sure you have a flashlight in each bedroom in case of power loss.
