We consider ourselves a pirate loving household over here. We take part in the Pirate festival every year, and proudly fly our Jolly Roger. ;) DH even dressed like a pirate for our wedding. So you know I was extra excited to get my hands on the new book Guide To Pirate Parenting by Tim Bete.
Tim writes this silly parenting spoof as told by Cap'n Billy "The Butcher" MacDougall. It starts out how he met Cap'n Billy and goes on to tell you how Cap'n Billy suggests you start raising your children to be pirates.
This is the perfect book for your inner pirate, and a great shower gift to get the new Dad involved. Men will skip ahead to chapter 6 (converting your mini van into a pirate ship) quicker than you can say Arrrr. It's well written and amusing - and hey, lots of new nursery rhymes for you to tell your kids:
There was an old pirate who lived on a boat,
Had so many children, couldn't keep it afloat!
He fed them some cod he baked in a torte,
And gave them all daggers and sent them to port.
Or perhaps my favorite reason from the Top 10 reasons to raise your children as pirates:
#8: When other parents hear you're raising your children as pirates, they'll stop asking you to volunteer at school.
Guide to Pirate Parenting won a 2009 Adding Wisdom Award, Humor Book. It's a short entertaining read, and I definitely give it two thumbs up.
