Bunnies and Easter

I think it's pretty obvious we love our bunnies in this family! ;) I just received a really great reminder email from Rabbit Haven, a Gig Harbor based rabbit rescue organization:

Rabbits are NOT low-maintenance pets! They require as much work as a dog or cat. (Yes, they really do! Our bun thinks he's cat)

Rabbits can live 8 to 10 years, sometimes longer.

The necessary spay or neuter can cost $100 or more, and rabbits require routine veterinary care for an "exotic" vet. (Trust me, it's a PITA when they get sick!)

Rabbits are not cuddly - As prey animals they can become frightened when held! (Well, ours is, but he's a one in a million bunny. Most rabbits will not hang out on the sofa with you and watch TV. A lot love to be scritched though, but not by young children. Our other (rescue) rabbit that passed several months ago was not cuddly and hated children!)

Pet rabbits cannot be set "free" - it's a death sentence. (They cannot survive in very cold or very hot temperatures outside, no matter what the backyard breeder tries to tell you. And rabbits that have been caged have no idea how to take care of themselves in the wild.)

Visit the Make Mine Chocolate website for more information.

And please, this Easter and Spring, don't bring a pet bunny into your home without making the proper commitment. Rabbit Haven is turning away on average of 6 bunnies a week right now, and I have a feeling all the rabbit rescue organizations are having to turn away just as many right now. If you would like to bring a bun-bun into your family, please rescue one instead of buying one. You'll bypass the costs of spaying and neutering as well as the first vet visit (and find out who's the best exotic vet in the area!)
