Preparedness Tuesday: Tornados
It's Preparedness Tuesday - each Tuesday I post one thing you can do to help prepare you and your family for everyday disasters - be it job loss, bad weather (between being stuck in the middle of hurricane season, and the coming colder winter we're predicted), or even that ugly recession they keep talking about (blech!)
Today is actually Tornado Preparedness Day in some states. (Bet you didn't know that!)
Do you know the difference between a tornado watch and a tornado warning? A tornado watch means conditions are right for a tornado to spring up at any moment. A tornado warning means one has been spotted in the area and you must take cover immediately!
Remember that tornadoes can strike any time, even when you're in the shower or taking the dog for a walk. Know where the safe places are at all time - and make sure they are accessible. Clean the clutter out of the closet if that's your safe place!
Try to choose a room inside the house that's not an outer wall. Stay away from any glass doors or large objects that could easily become projectiles. A closet, basement, or even the shower can be safer areas. If you are absolutely positive you have the time, a mattress over the bathtub can be a good area as well. Don't forget to bring your pets in the safe space with you!
Try to keep a weather radio in your safe spot in the home (not in the tub!!!), as well as a gallon of water, a flashlight, and a first aid kit. It is always possible that you may be trapped in your safe spot for several hours before help can arrive, so be prepared.
Cars aren't safe during a tornado - try to find a safe spot inside a building or lie down in a deep ditch as far away from your car or any other large possible debris as you can.
Only call 911 after a tornado if someone is seriously injured or trapped, or if there is a down power line or gas leak. Try to keep the lines open for more serious calls.
