When Frugality Goes Too Far

I came across a blog post several months (or more) ago, and I have to say I was really mortified. (I've had this in drafts for ages. There are no references to the writers name in this post)

The author was pleased with how much money she saved by recycling the lids and caps from her laundry products as building blocks for her toddlers.

Say what?

You're going to let your toddlers play with chemically covered caps, that will of course end up in their mouths, just so you can save $10 on building blocks?

You're kidding me, right?

I would love to say that at least the caps came off organic friendly products, but no - the blog (like mine) was also covered in photos of her deals, and there wasn't a bottle of Seventh Generation or the like in them.

Cringe! I don't care how many times you run those caps through the dishwasher, there's still going to be some product left in the plastic itself. Besides, by the time you pay for all that energy and water, don't you think you could have just bought the blocks?

I embrace frugality - I love looking for bargains at thrift stores, we make sure lights are turned off if they aren't needed, and I freeze leftovers for easy meals for DH to take to work. There's a limit to frugality - and if you're putting your family at risk, I think you've crossed the line.

Have you come across a frugal idea that made you go WHAT? Or were you guilty of maybe going too far and have since seen the err of your ways?

back to you from my change spends post, I can't believe ppl still write checks??!?!

And, I turn the lights off when not in use, and keep the thermostat at a certain temp, and use those energy saving bulbs, but I'm like you, if its not going to be eco friendly for the whole family, then don't even bother!

Oh my...Do you really want my input on this subject??? Well I tell you what, I will give you something to think about....READ ALL of your CFL light bulb packages and then go to the internet to get the official information at the .gov site or wherever it is that the official information is on the subject and read all about the safety procedures to follow in the event one of these breaks in your home. Enough said.

This may sound strange/ not current, but when I was a kid, if we wanted blocks, our dad would just go in the woods, find a downed tree and make us some. I guess we don't all have dad's like that? It's a shame...

Those mercury filled "eco friendly" light bulbs are a hazard to you and the environment just as soon as one breaks. Sometimes it's harder to look at our own families to see mistakes we make. I've had my share, just like you and the frugal girl.

I read something like this in the news, about how this family won't use gas to heat their home so all of them--mom, dad and four kids, I think--stay in one bed with tons of blankets so they don't freeze to death. For crying out loud! Those poor children!
