Recipe: Homemade Doggy Treats

I found this recipe AGES ago online, and I don't remember which site to give them credit for! (Who knows, considering how many years it's been, the site may not even be up anymore) It's fairly easy, and at least you know what your dog is eating, unlike some commercial treats. Yup, you can eat it yourself! You can switch out the cheddar cheese for just about anything you want, shredded fruits like apple or blueberries, shredded chicken, etc.

In my photos below, I tried to make it without the cheese and nothing else this time, but being a true morsel hunting corgi as all corgis are, she knew! So if you make it with the cheese and try to skip out the next time, and yours is as smart as the Pudgy Princess, look out! ;)

You can also half the dough ball and freeze it for another round by wrapping it in plastic wrap, and then placing it in a freezer safe plastic bag or aluminum foil.

1 cup rolled oats (such as Quaker - hit up your grocery's bulk department for it for cheap!)
1/3 cup margarine
1 cup Boiling water
3/4 cup cornmeal
1 tablespoons sugar
2 teaspoons chicken or beef flavored instant bouillon
1/2 cup milk
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
1 egg, beaten
2 - 3 cups whole wheat flour.

Preheat your oven to 325 degrees, and grease cookie sheets.

In large bowl, combine rolled oats, margarine and boiling water and let stand 10 minutes, before mixing well.

Stir in cornmeal, sugar, bouillon, milk, cheese and egg; mix well.

Next, add flour 1 cup at a time, mixing well after each addition to form a stiff dough.

On a lightly floured surface, knead in remaining flour until dough is smooth and no longer sticky. Roll or pat out dough to 1/2 inch thickness, cut with bone shaped cookie cutter. (or any shape, really. I used hearts and bunnies since it was Easter. Just make sure you use a size relative to your dog's size)

Place 1 inch apart on greased cookie sheets. Bake at 325 degrees for 35 to 45 minutes on until golden brown. Cool completely before serving.

If you make it without the cheese, etc, your cost is around $1 - a lot cheaper than commercial dog treats. :)

I make treats for my dog too. My boy loves cheese so I'll have to give this a go. He has food allergies so I'll have to skip the corn meal in your recipe.

What a good idea--if I had a dog, I'd make them. I wonder if I can make cat treats?
