Swine Flu?
The whole henny-penny-the-sky-is-falling story with the swine flu? I've raised my eyebrows, but I'm not running around in a total panic - and neither should you. Yes, we should take it seriously (especially if you live in an area where there was a confirmed case) but if you take a few steps to take care of you and your family, I really don't feel you have anything to be worried about. Hit up my Preparedness Tuesdays series for more detailed information on situations like this.
*Wash your hand thoroughly after using the restroom, and when you come inside. Don't handle any food items until you have washed your hands!
*Carry hand sanitizer in your purse or pocket and use this after touching items that have come in contact with others, such as shopping carts.
*Always cough or sneeze into your shoulder or the inside of your elbow, not your hands.
*Disinfect items in your home that are touched frequently, such as door knobs, light switches, and remote controls.
*Take your shoes off at the door so you don't track in germs.
And if you're really worried:
*Don't go out shopping if you don't have to. This is where keeping a two week supply of food (and toilet paper!) on hand is helpful.
*WalMart and most pharmacies carry a 10 pack of medical grade face masks that will cover your mouth and nose. I believe WalMart's price is around $3. Wear one if you are going into an area that you might come in contact with germs, remembering to change it and throw them away every few hours or if it's too wet with saliva/perspiration. You can also purchase Latex gloves so you don't come in contact with germs. (We all know some people pretty much never wash their hands - ick!)
*Eat properly, with a well balanced diet. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, and flush your system out with the proper amount of water.

I'm not sure how I should handle this. Having a 13-month-old I'm more afraid now than I would have been before she was in my life.
I can only imagine if this gets out of control, people walking around with latex gloves and face masks to do normal everyday shopping. Honestly though, I do feel the urge to go buy some extra stuff as a precaution. Thinking ahead. Because if the news announces something trying to find the items then should be "fun". We all know the news likes to cause panic too. lol Living in California though it's probably a good idea to ALWAYS have an extra supply of things like canned food, bottled water and first aid kits since we get earthquakes more. I think it's always best to prepare yourself for the worst but hope for the best. This way there are no surprises.
I probably won't buy anything though. Hope I don't regret that.
I think there's more panic about this than anything, the same thing happend with SARS and the Bird Flu, it's good to be prepared, but we do need to remember that people die every year due to the REGULAR flu, and with the deaths in mexico, well, it's Mexico definitely not the USA where we're just a bit cleaner and have better health care. I worry somewhat, we're just taking the usual wash your hands before meals after the bathroom after outside ect ect precautions and hubby will be taking hand sanitizer to work with him now...
I really think part of the problem why Mexico is having it so bad is the sanitation issues. Hopefully, this should make most people wash their hands more, and slow down the spreading of other germs for awhile.
Michele, I agree- I don't think I ever really thought twice about preparedness before, either. I'd just make sure you have some Pedialyte in the house, and some Dayquil for you just for peace of mind - it's items we sometimes use in other instances, so at least it doesn't really go to waste.
This was very scary to hear about!
I don't take Tristan to places like Wal-Mart unless I have too.
Now I have to worry about myself!
Where do these "flu"s come from?
