Review: Bounce Dryer Bar

Thanks to Vocalpoint, my family got to try the new Bounce Dryer Bar in Outdoor Fresh scent.

The Bounce Dryer Bar is supposed to last for up to 2 months before you slide in a new insert. Now, I pretty much only use liquid fabric softener because my dryer eats the dryer sheets into the lint trap, and I end up with static everywhere. This could solve my problem of the hungry lint trap! ;)

The Bounce Dryer Bar was super easy to install into our very ancient dryer. There's a few things I want to point out though:

A) it's in there for all loads, so if you are drying any flame resistant kids clothing, or cloth diapers and inserts, you'll ruin them. Same thing goes for microfiber towels. You'll have to line dry them.

B) if you do separate loads because of some family members having skin issues, again, you're stuck with it in there.

I suppose you could get around trying to slide the insert in and out for the loads, but it might break.

I first tested the Bounce Dryer Bar out on a load of towels. I know, I know, I test everything out on my poor towels. But I'd rather be safe than sorry, plus towels are notorious for static, right? ;) At the end of the dryer time, they came out static free, although I didn't really smell any Bounce fragrance on them. Phooey. (as I always say, this could be just because of how old my washer and dryer are)

My next test was on DH's scrubs. I hate scrubs, they are a static-y pain usually no matter what I use. They actually came out pretty much static free!

So, if you are always forgetting to add a fabric softener, be it liquid or a sheet, to your wash, the new Bounce Dryer Bar might be the answer to your problem. It's pretty much a stick it and forget it answer for a few months. The Bounce Dryer Bar runs about $5.99, which is pretty good compared to most fabric softeners (taking into account the two months supply)

Update 1/1/2010: I'm getting a lot of hits, emails, and comments about the Bounce Dryer Bar. I noticed a lot of you are having problems with your Dryer Bar. I am on my second refill of my original product now with the original holder, and I don't seem to be having the same problems. I don't work for Bounce, I'm not paid to write about it, I'm just a housewife who tried it and wrote about it.

For what it's worth, my dryer is an older model like I stated above. I can't really adjust the temperature other than cotton, linens/delicates or permanent press. (See... told you it was old!) I often slide the insert in and out, because I don't use it for my daughter's clothes. I'm wondering if the reason a lot of folks are seeing their Dryer Bar fall apart is the temperature in your dryer vs mine? If you are having problems, contact Bounce either via their webpage or call 1-800-5-BOUNCE with the details of the problem, and if you know what make and model your dryer is, include that, just in case it helps them nail the problem(s) down. The only way a company can improve a product is with feedback, so help them out! :)

never even heard of them. Sounds interesting but I do have an itchy reaction to a lot of dryer sheets. I tend to stay away from it. However a hypoallergenic one would be nice.

That is the first time I've seen one of those. I'd probably ruin my clothes if I used one.

Hey at least your stinky clothes from the washer will smell good now! Ha ha ha. I kill myself.

Ok, I'll be the first...it looks like a maxi pad. Lol!

Just had a horrid experience with the Bounce Dryer Bar. It not only came "unglued" from the dryer, but the inside bar melted on the whole inside of NEW dryer. There was a piece about the size of a golf ball in the dryer as well as lots of little marble size pieces, not to mention my clothes. Tried calling P&G about it but they were closed. Will try tomorrow morning.

I just purchased this. The first time I used them all my dark colored clothes came out with white streaks and chunks all over them. Like when you get deoderant on your blouse. I'm removing it as soon as I get home tonight! What a waste of $5.50.

Storm, The Psychotic Housewife said...

Oh ick Laura! I didn't have that happen when I used it. (I promise I wouldn't leave that out of my review!) I'd definitely write or call Bounce and complain!!

BJ: Let me know what they tell you. I'm wondering if the batch that came out after the early ones for review like I received are defective!

I hope both of you at the very least get your money back!

I tried it and was so excited; however, it left white marks all over my dark clothes and I had to re-wash them. In fact, I pulled the package it came in and they even address this--recommending you use a bar of soap to rub on the white marks and then re-wash. Geez--not much of a time saver. Waste of money and now I'm stuck with the holder on my dryer wall!

Jason said...

I had the same problem with white streaks and wax spots on my clothes. I don't recommend spending money on these things just stick to the traditional way.

Dryer bar caused itchy red bumps all over by teenage daughter. Must be pretty strong. The need to make a hypoallergenic one!

A&E's said...

It seems to work pretty well for me in my fairly old dryer. But it sure does look like a maxi pad, and I laugh every time I look at it.

I, too, had the same problem with the bounce bar. It came off the inside of the dryer and made a hideous loud banging noise because it came off. It won't go back on and now the inside of the dryer has the glue marks and won't come off. 4 months? No it lasted maybe 4 days for me. How disappointing.

Jesi said...

I just tried this out this past weekend and had some of the same issues. White marks on all of our dark clothes (husbands uniforms!). I ripped that thing out of our dryer and we were able to get the sticky residue off with Goo Gone. DH had to put some elbow grease into it, but definately better than having ruined clothing. Back to the sheets for me!

Renee said...

I was hopeful until it broke apart and left chunks on my clothes and new dryer. Loved the freedom from tossing in the sheets or fabric softner but the mess it made wasn't worth it. It only lasted about 6 weeks before it fell apart. The commercial on TV says it should last about 4 mo. and we are only a family of 3 so don't even use the dryer every day.

Heather said...

I was going to go buy one but thought I would check for reviews. Glad I did! I don't have time or money to waste on putting soap on my clothes and rewashing. I wanted a time saver so I'll buy the sheets. Thanks!!!!

I dislike this new dryer bar. I purchased it thinking that it would be a great solution for my problem of forgetting to add the dryer sheets, or running out in the middle of doing laundry. NOT!! This product does nothing except make the clothes smell good. I have static like you would not believe, and my clothes are not soft. I am so disappointed bc I thought I had finally found an answer to my problem. Back to dryer sheets for me.

I treid the bounce bar, 2 months one, and was extremely dissapointed! We are a family of 5, so laundry is always an issue. Our clothes smeled great, and were static free, but the "2 month" bar, did not even last 2 weeks! I called Bounce, hoping for a replacement, to give it another try, and all they offered me was a coupon for a bounce product. I wash everything in cold, and dry on medium heat for EVERYTHING!I even line dry all of my linnens, and our machines are less than a year and a half old. would of tried it again, if Bounce had of offered to replace the old one, and would of been hooked if it worked as it said it would, but not now! Im going back to my Downy liquid, whice is tried and tested in our house, wkrs great!

I purchased the dryer bar a few days ago, hoping it would help with all the winter static. I still was using liquid fabric softener in addition. My teenage daughter was so tickled, she installed it and did some laundry!!! That in itself was a miracle. Then I found these white sticky patches on my jeans and wondered if she accidentally dried a pack of gum! Then I noticed these sticky patches on the inside of the dryer drum, also. I thought it might go away after several loads...it's new..give it a chance! Well, it didn't go away and it is not worth the aggrevation of the messy sticky white blotches left on your clothes. I'll just stick to dryer sheets, thank you. Very disappointed :(

Mine broke apart too. It was about half way through the suggested lifetime and I was drying some blankets. All these little balls came out on it and the big parts of the bar were stuck to the inside (not too bad because I dry on a low heat). I peeled it all out and it left a lovely sticky mark on the inside of the 4 year old dryer. I emailed the bounce people and they emailed back saying they never heard of this happening (which I doubted) and will be sending coupons. I am still waiting for the coupons weeks later. Never again

Trish said...

mine lasted on dryer load and itsin a million pieces all over the place....

Michael said...

I have had this dryer bar for serveral weeks. It falls off every other load and just today the bar came off of the plastic mount that slides into the hodler. I had to microwave the bar part to make is mushy enough to reattach it to the foundation. I had such high hopes for this product. From the sounds of the posts, the company seems to have reduced the quality of the product from the original test batch. This will be the last one of these I buy unless they come out with and improved version.

SurpriseParty said...

Do not buy this product!!! I purchased the 4 month bar thinking "what a great invention!". It lasted in my dryer less than 3 weeks! The part which sticks to the dryer installed fine & is still in place, however, the actual bar fell off the grate-like frame it was attached to & broke into chunks in my dryer & got all over a load of laundry which I then had to rewash & now I have to buy fabric softener... don't waste your money!

Megan said...

The first time I used it, I thought it was the best 5.50 I had ever bought! but it broke apart during the 2nd use! now I am stuck with gunk on the side of the dryer! It looks like goo-gone will take it off, but still this item was meant to save me $$!

Ann said...

Sorry to hear all the bad reviews.
Have had my in the dryer for about 3 months, almost ready for a new one. I just love it. No more dryer sheets all over the place.

beharu said...

mine worked but all my clothes have a funky smell if I don't wear them right away. Not using anymore!

Desiree said...

I installed the dryer bar inside my front loading dryer. After two loads, it became detached, and the bar broke into little bits and pieces everywhere. I was disappointed-the first couple of loads smelled great and felt better than using regular sheets. I think the company should put a notice on the box if its not intended for front loaders.

Rosie said...

Got it a couple of weeks ago, still hanging together and the lil' bar smelled great but it doesn't make your clothes smell at all. Back to my fabric softener. I live by what I can smell.

Casey said...

I LOVE IT!!!!!! I have used it since Jan. No problems.

Natalie said...

one and done. Tried the product and thought it worked well. after about 3 weeks, the static was showing up again. that was the 4 month bar. went back to bounce dryer sheets. had to use goo gone to remove the adhesive from the inside of the dryer.

lola lloyd said...

I wear mostly black and this product left permanent white streaks on all of those clothes. Similar to the stains underarm deodorant leaves. Not a new concept that should have discovered in product testing. Ruined all my work clothes. $100s. Thanks for nothing.

Robin said...

I LOVE my Bounce Dryer Bar. The only thing I've noticed that I don't particularly care for is that it doesn't make my clothes smell good if I only use the bar. I am a fabric softener addict. I use liquid softener (Snuggle or Downy) and sheets, (also Snuggle or Downy) AND the Bounce bar. The best part is if my husband ever decides to be a sweetheart and do some laundry when I'm not at home, he often forgets to add any fabric softener, then the Bounce bar is already in the dryer. (Sometimes I wonder if he even adds detergent half the time. But how can I complain? At least he's trying.) My household contains myself, DH, and our 7 year old son who changes clothes more than a 16 year old girl. So we do load after load of laundry. My first bar lasted 2 months. The bar I thought was a replacement was a whole new kit, but it is supposed to last 4 months. I'm convinced that it will last that long, if not longer. And knock on wood, we haven't found any chunks of white waxy stuff or white streaks on any of our clothes. Now if I could just figure out how to keep the sand out of my dryer (and my son’s socks, pockets, shoes, etc.)!

I DO NOT RECOMMEND the Dryer Bar to anyone!! It left my clothes smelling great but it would not stay stuck to my dryer so there for it broke into 3 little balls and a million tiny pieces!! Now I have tons of the bar stuck to the inside of my dryer, who wants to have to scrub the inside of their dryer?, don't we have to clean enough things around the house without adding to it!! Total waste of Money... $8 down the drain!!!

WARNING!!! DO NOT BUY! -- Ruined My Dark's. I bought the bounce dryer bar today. I just completed my 5th load, which were all darks -- shirts/polo shirts, T-shirts -- All Dark. The Bounce Dryer Bar left marks on every dark shirt. I am now re washing everything. As soon as the towels are done drying, I'll remove the bar and return it to the store tomorrow. This is a horrible product. My time is too precious and money too short. The Streaks did not wash out after the 2nd wash.

I am glad I read these comments quite frankly I am not going to buy it now.. I have a brand new HE Dryer and Washer and well no one can figure out how to turn it on but me lol So with that said I don't forget the dryer sheet and/or softener soo will be doing the same old thing don't want goo and/or permanent stuff in my new dryer not at 1500.00 for the thing and don't want deodorant looking dark clothes either :) thanks all for the reviews this helped.

Jonathan said...

we picked one up a couple months ago. I have to say, we've since taken it out of the dryer(which is a pain to do). we found it left streaks on dark clothes. Blues and Blacks seem worse. I washed my uniform shirts and pants and had to re-wash them because of these little whitish stains the bar left behind. i don't recommend it. stick to dryer sheets.

deana said...

all i can say is that whoever came up with this idea needs a RAISE!! i have been using it for 6 months and have not had any of the issues that some of you had! as a mom of 6and a farmer's wife, laundry is always going! it definitely saves me time and money, as i would forget to put in softener, and will not use sheets since seeing one hang out a pant leg of a lady while she was getting her nails done! LOL!! anyway, totally love it, but will admit to using 2 bars as i am a little bit of a SMELL freak!

Melia said...

I will never use this again, like so many others here I found that stains were left on my daughter's favorite pants and shreds of the bar were melted on the dryer walls.

Lacey said...

I am on my 3rd bar and have not had any problems with it. I doesn't last me but about 3 weeks when I by the 2 month bar, but I do alot of laundry (2 teenage daughters) and my dryer runs pretty hot.

Anonymous said...

Wondering how full the dryer is when all of your bars fall apart. I have used this since it came out and have never had a problem...well, okay, once while drying my down coat, but I had tennis balls in the dryer and forgot to remove the bar...completely my fault. I do fairly large loads, and my dryer is a pretty large dryer. Maybe its the amount of clothes and size of dryer?

sharonmama said...

Just purchased my first dryer bar, and from the sounds of the reviews I am a bit hesitant to place in my beloved dryer....oh what the hell. I'm gonna give it a whirl...will report back after laundry day. Wish me luck.

Just looking at this product still being sold on the market makes me sooo angry!!!! They false advertise that it is so great for families and my 7 year old had such a severe allergic reaction because of the chemical makeup she now has asthma and it has triggered new allergies to a completely healthy child who has never had any allergies ever!!!! CAUTION TO ALL- THIS PRODUCT IS DANGEROUS AND IS ON THE BRINK OF BEING RECALLED!!!! Its Toxic and please do not use it!!! I have used Bounce dryer sheets for years and thought it was such a great shortcut but only if I knew I was poisoning my little girl!!!!

AmandaGrace said...

I have been using the bounce dryer bar for about a month and I was looking for a coupon to get a replacement..I love it! No issues in my house with my family or clothes or dryer... Its great!

I just bought 2 of these yesterday! I have done 2 loads of laundry already and i think they work good! My clothes are static free and smell great....i use purex mountain fresh laundry detergent and the blue suavital liquid fabric softener plus the dryer bar...no complaints yet!

Sylvia C said...

I used one until it ran out and never noticed any white marks. I guess it works well with my dryer. I loved the results and not having to deal with remembering the softener or searching for the dryer sheet or finding it in my jean leg in the grocery store. =/ Then again, I use the delicate cycle mostly and medium cycle rarely. Maybe it falls apart with high temp?

kat said...

Tried it once. First load it fell off and broke into little pieces. Had to rewash those clothes several times to get the white streaks and to wash away what seemed like 20 dryer sheets worth of "softness" off of our clothes. Hate it!!! Now use the Purex three in one and love them! No worry about dryer sheets and the come in unscented.

lisa said...

I bought one about a week or so ago because I often forget to put dryer sheets in. I HATE it! My clothes come out so staticky no matter what type of load I've done. I didn't save the package & don't think I have my receipt to submit for a refund but I WON'T be buying this again! Don't waste your money on this.

I love the bounce dryer bar. I moved to Ireland in 2005 with my Irish husband, and over here they use TONS of fabric softener, but hardly any dryer sheets. While I was visiting my daughter in San Diego I spied the Bounce Dryer Bar and brought it home. I installed it and have been using it ever since. My husband and I run a Bed and Breakfast, so we have lots of washing to do! It just works great. I'm sorry for all the people that have had white marks, etc... but I was very careful when I installed it - and have not had any problems since! It's a wonderful product. I have my daughter sending me more as I run out. I've never had white spots, or any of the problems mentioned in the other comments. Cheers!

I love my dryer bar. I was buying the smaller ones, but I bought a 6 month bar when we moved into this house in March, I know it hasn't been 6 months but I have 5 kids, I am just now replacing it. If you have a load you don't want to use it in you can take it out for that load then replace it afterwards. My clothes are great, smell good and static free and I'm not throwing a ton of dryer sheets or plastic bottles in the garbage all the time. Now I just need to remember where I found the 6 month bar??? Most stores only carry the smaller ones.

Sabrina said...

I love my dryer bar. I bought a 6 month dryer bar when I moved in, in March. I am just now replacing it. I have 5 kids so maybe it didn't last 6 months but most people don't have that mush laundry either. Never had a problem ruining clothes and if I didn't want it in a load I just take it out and replace it afterwards. It makes me feel good knowing I don't have all the waste from several dryer sheets or fabric softener bottles.

Very unhappy with the Bounce dryer bar. It mostly held on (only slid out of its holder once) but it only lasted 3 weeks in my front load GE dryer! Plus its sparatic in making the clothes smell like they've been washed.

CindyL said...

I was really looking forward to using the dryer bar. Boy, was I dissappointed! I followed the instructions, even rechecked them. My husbands jeans came out with white marks all over. And, no lint collected on the lint screen. After rechecking to see that I did do everything right, I washed and dried another load of laundry to see if it was just because it was the first load. Nope, the next load came out the same. It took a lot of scrubbing and another washing to get rid of the spots. Two more loads through the dryer with just dryer balls got the lint flowing again. It isn't the dryer, it's not even a year old and it worked fine before and after.
By the way, I love your website.

Sally said...

After reading all these reviews, I wish I had read them first! My first one was fine, and then I put the replacement bar in, and then it kept un-sticking from the dryer wall and then broke into lots of little pieces. I got anothher one a week or so ago, and after 2 loads, it keeps coming off the dryer wall. I guess I will go back to dryer sheets!

CindyL said...

Does anyone know why there is a spring in the bar? On top of leaving a residue on our clothes, I think the spring would rip them. They won't answer me about the purpose of the spring.

I don't know what everyones problem is. I love these bars. I just can't find them like I use to. I put 2 in the dryer one across from the other. I've been to Walmart twice and they are always out. If you put large bulky items in the dryer they will come off and break up. I have used the same glued on holders from day one. both of mind are empty now and I find myself useing 2 and 3 dryer sheets per load, I hate those things. It's like picking up trash in your yard, it's everywhere. I have a daughter that has allergies too and she is fine with the bars, she picks the smell she wants. We like the outdoor fresh the best. I would love to find coupons for them. I just don't leave wet clothes in the dryer laying on the bars. We can't always dry the load completely before leaving the house and I don't let the dryer run when not at home, just asking for trouble there. coupons coupons coupons I need coupons.

Any idea how to remove the bar holder? It appears to be damaging my clothes with sharp edges on the holder but not sure how to remove it.

Anonymous said...

Mine fell off after 20 minutes. It won;t stay on either.

Left white marks all over dark clothes. Total disaster. DO NOT BUY.

Anonymous said...

Mine's been in for a couple of months with zero problems other than major static. I'm still on the 2 month bar and am about to replace it due to static. Those with problems, what heat setting do you use most often? I only use low and medium. Ever. Maybe the high temperature is the problem? Those who like it, do you use a lower setting? Anyone else notice major static issues?

I tried the bounce dryer bar with an older dryer the holder works fine but the first bar only lasted a 2 weeks it's just me and a roommate so maybe 1-2 loads a week. The second bar a 2 month bar lasted a week then feel apart in the dryer. I also didn't know I couldn't dry things like microfiber clothes. I can't stand touching dryer sheets something about the texture so I though hey this might work. Well I'm back to using liquid fabric softener in the washer and nothing in the dryer.

Was so excited and now so disappointed not to mention one upset husband who is going to have to figure out some way to get the thing off my dryer. I - like many others - have had the white marks all over my good dark clothes. Should have done the research but who new???? I love Bounce dryer sheets but this bar doesn't even seem to have a scent at all. Any ideas on how to get the thing off the dryer drum??? Any idea on how to get your money back??? Don't have the package, only the receipt.

I have been using the bar for about 6 months and not had any problems mentioned in this blog. My dryer doesn't have a high heat setting, maybe that is the difference. But my dark clothes don't show any white streaks. Of course, the bar comes out when I dry anything that would bang against the dryer walls.

I love the Bounce Bar! I dont think it lasts as long as it should though. However I do have a great tip. When it at its end, and theres the little bit left..I take it out and lay it over my gas heat vents and Wa-La the room smells great! Prb not a good idea with small children, but even my teen boys thought it was a great idea. So then I go to thinking..what about their stinky gym bags? Yep so I slipped it in there. And how about those stinky sneakers..Yes Maam I popped one in a shoe and though gosh how about the other. No biggie..took the shoes put them in a bag with the left over bar tied it up over night..and it refreshed the shoes. Soon youre walking around looking for things to freshen up...LOL! Dresser drawers, winter/summer clothes being stored..oh the ideas! :)

I haven't had any problems with white marks, but I do have holes in my clothes, compliments of the Bounce Bar. I plan on giving them a call, to see what can be done. I'm talking 3/4 of my clothes have holes in them. I'm furious! Stay away from this product!

I am very sorry to hear about the problems people have incurred by using the Bounce Bar. I too have used Bounce Free sheets for years, and looked forward to this new product. I have been using my first bar for months now without a single problem...no spots, no tear..., no damage at all. I like the fact that it is easy to use and fragrance free as well.

Marilyn L said...

I have had no trouble with the dryer bar. And will continue to use them.

Herkfixer said...

I can tell you all don't like to think about things. 99% of these problems go away if you glue the holder on the surface trailing one of the fins in your dryer. Just run your dryer and whichever direction your dryer spins, put it "after" one of the fins. If you put it before the fins then the clothing will catch it as it is spinning.. If you put it after it that just brush against it and get the dryer sheet effect. This also prevents all you clothes from putting all their collective wet weight on top of the bar a rubbing off on your blacks. Also when you attach it, press down on the empty holder and rub around the surface really hard for several minutes.. If you just try to slap it on and go then the adhesive won't be secured on all the parts contacting the dryer can.

So, install it on the can immediately after the fin, depending on which direction your dryer spins, and press down on all points for several minutes when you install it.
