DVD Reviews & Giveaway: Sid The Science Kid & Dive Olly Dive

My family recently had the chance to review a couple of really cool PBS television show DVD's. In the interest of not making this post a mile long and making all my readers start snoring, I'll highlight what each DVD is about and give y'all our verdict on them. :)

As my returning readers know, I am a big fan of PBS kids shows, and especially, a big fan of anything Henson Company related - so I personally love(d) Sid The Science Kid. If you're not very familiar with Sid The Science Kid, each episode starts off with Sid asking a question, usually with his parents help. He has a couple of pals that help him along the way - Gabriela, Gerald, and May, and his teacher, Susie. They find out the answers to their questions in the Super Fab Lab. The age range on Sid is the 2-5 year olds, but I'd personally peg it more as 3-5 years olds. That's not to say 2 years won't enjoy it, but I think more of the learning stuff would be lost. These DVDs retail for $12.99, but I peeked and saw that Amazon currently has them for $9.99!

Sid The Science Kid - The Bug Club This DVD has four different episodes, including "Hello Doggie" This episode has Sid our favorite 4 year old wondering if all the dogs in the neighborhood are talking to him via barking, and he learns all the different ways animals communicate. As you can probably guess, this was our favorite episode on the DVD. ;) It runs about 115 minutes long.

Sid The Science Kid - Change Happens This one has four different episodes as well, including My Mushy Banana, where Sid learns why bananas turn brown, and The Perfect Pancake, where Sid is trying to figure out how his grandma knows how to make the pancakes just right. This one also runs about 115 minutes long - the episodes are just under 30 minutes each on both of the Sid DVDs.

Dive Olly Dive - Ship Shape Sub: This was actually my family's first foray into the Dive Olly Dive club. Can I just say, I as a Mom, am in love? This DVD features 5 episodes that are shorter - the DVD runs about 55 minutes total - making it a good "reward" DVD (allow them to watch a short episode before bed, or while potty training) Our favorite episode was "Haunted Ship Wreck" where they stay overnight on a haunted ship wreck. It's not actually haunted, but they have some trouble in it with some naughty pranks.

Dive Olly Dive is for the 2-5 year old range as well (though 5 year olds will probably get bored), and a lot of fun. As a Mom I liked that kids learn lessons from each episode (especially not to play pranks on others! lol)

Win it! One lucky readers will win their very own copies of each DVD I reviewed up above! To enter, please tell us your favorite PBS or PBS Sprout kids show, and which one of these DVDs you think your children (or grandchildren, niece, etc) will most enjoy - Sid, or Dive Olly Dive?

(Please answer BOTH parts of my question. Every giveaway, folks are being disqualified because they aren't reading my post!)

We have several favorite PBS Kids shows at our house. The 3 year old loves Curious George and the 6 year old love CyberChase...and they both love to play on PBSKids on the computer.

We would prefer the Sid the Science Kid DVD...I saw a preview the other day for a new Jim Henson show coming in the fall about dinosaurs. It looks fun.

My son loves Sid the Science kid and it is his absolute favorite and I really like it because not only is it fun to watch with it's catchy songs, but is also very educational. He'd like both DVDs, but he'd flip for Sid. Thanks for the great giveaway.

My son is 3. He adores super why because he "has the power to help." Its a super cute show with wonderful educational lessons too!! He also likes Sid the science kid because of the catchy songs and the school setting. My son cannot wait to go to school!
He would like the sid films better than dive olly dive he said. I know he would enjoy then both, but says he would rather have sid because "he's a boy like me." haha! They say the cutest things!

Oh - we love Sid around my house. I just bought one DVD about decaying and changing.

I haven't seen the other one, yet.

We really like Between the Lions and Calliou.

As for learning - you might be amazed how much a 2 year old can learn from movies.
