Recipe: Slow Cooker Apple Butter

This apple butter is soooo easy to make! It's a little time consuming chopping the apples, and of course waiting! But you'll never want to pay $6 for a little jar of apple butter in the store again! All you need is:

1 cup brown sugar
1 tablespoon cinnamon

Chop the apples into small-ish pieces. You can peel them first if you desire, but I really like leaving the skin on mine. A lot of the nutrients are in the skin. The only difference it makes is that your apple butter may end up more chunky. It tastes just as good, so why do all the extra work too? ;) Now since it may take you awhile to get all apples chopped - you'll want to fill up your slow cooker as much as you can! - you'll of course see the apples getting browned from the oxygen in the air. I suppose you could add a few drops of lemon juice if it really bothers you, but it's going to turn brown in the slow cooker anyways.

Mix the brown sugar and cinnamon in a dish and pour over the apples. You can add more cinnamon as you desire - the one tablespoon keeps it very faint in the taste.

Cook on high for 1 hour then place on low for 10 hours. Stir with a whisk, then cook another 1 hour on low. Stir again. If you want perfectly smooth apple butter and peeled your apples, you'll want to push your apple butter through a strainer before canning it. (You can also freeze it in rubbermaid, of course)
