Food Storage Friday - Leftovers Stock Up Edition

With rising prices, bad weather, unstable job environments, one of the best things we as women (or men) in charge of our homes can do, is work on our food storage to ensure our family will continue to eat well no matter what the circumstance is. It doesn't take a lot to organize your pantry and make a little room for extras, and with the help of coupons and sales, can be done very cheaply. Every Friday, I'd like to encourage you to join in with me to do one or two little things to add to or work with your food storage.

With the craziness of the holiday weekend, I know a lot of us don't have much time to do a lot of pantry planning and fixing. So this week I'm going to make a simple suggestion: take advantage of the last days of these store sales this week, and buy an extra one or two of every shelf stable item, such as canned or jarred gravy, stuffing, mashed potatoes, etc. All of these are items that go very well with other meat related dishes, and keep for at least 6 months. (so if you're like me and crave stuffing in April, you've already got it on hand!)

If you have extra time this coming week, the first of the month is here. I find that the first is a great day to check up on my pantry and make sure nothing is past the expiration date, and if there are things near the date, I can plan those into my menu plan soon. I dust off my cans, and make sure there are no cans that are leaking, or packages that look funky. Don't forget to clean out your fridge too while you are it!
