WalMart is trying to help families put together Christmas dinner for 8 for around $30, and New Year's Eve dinners for 10 for around $40. Right away when hearing this, I was assuming they mean sans coupons, and I was hoping it meant fresh food. I really wanted to hop on over and price point every item for a dinner for y'all, but the closest Super WalMart is nearly an hour away from here. Our little WalMart here in Port Orchard has an incredibly limited selection of food - basically milk and packaged. (Where's the fun in that?) Bremerton's selection isn't much better, either.
WalMart's Holiday dinner includes:
One 10-pound spiral cut half-ham
Three 8-ounce cans Del Monte Green Beans
One 10-pound bag of Russet potatoes
One 12-count package of Sara Lee dinner rolls
One 10 inch Pumpkin Pie
I've got to tell you, I thought $30 was rather high for that, but I guess that's me. ;) First of all, WalMart DOES accept printed internet coupons, so if you are following their menu plan, pop on over here and print this coupon to help you save $1.00 off 4 cans of those Del Monte veggies included in the list. And I probably don't have to tell you further, to buy another brand of dinner rolls to save even more money. And if you have a Fred Meyer in your area, borrow this week's ad (the one starting 12/20) to have them price match a Mrs. Smith's pumpkin pie for just $2. (So now your dinner for 8 has already been dropped to $25 or less, depending on the ham you choose!)
I personally take advantage of many items during the Thanksgiving sales for our holiday dinners here in December. I picked up an extra turkey for a little over $5 and kept it in the freezer until today actually. With my coupons and deals on Stove Top Stuffing, Heinz Gravy, and Betty Crocker Mashed Potatoes (less than $2 for the 3 items!), I've already got several side dishes. I'll be rounding it out with a nice Caeser salad, some homemade Garlic Cheese Biscuits that costs me less than a dollar to make a huge batch of, and I'll be baking something chocolate-y to go along with it.
On WalMart's site, you can find some great recipes and idea's from chef Aaron Sanchez, who you may recognize from the Food Network. (How I miss having that channel on all the time!)
Win it! MomCentral gave me two extra $30 gift cards to WalMart to give away to two readers! To enter, please tell me what your holiday dinner will be or was. Do you have a traditional dish in your family that is served every year?

Not until I joined the family that I started bringing side dishes I grew up with like Watergate Salad and Candied Yams.
Normally my family is another story, it's a full spread including Homemade Beef Noodles, Ham and Turkey, Homemade dinner rolls and deviled eggs to die for.
However I was just informed that Christmas dinner at my family has been canceled. We are doing Christmas desserts instead!!! Everybody has their own families, so it actually makes sense not to host another dinner.
We have ham and all the fixins. My favorite side dish is the deviled eggs.
We have baked ahme and I have a great receipe for do ahead mash potatoes- so rich but I only make them on Holidays so I can enjoy 2 or 3 times a years
We have a traditional Turkey dinner for Christmas. I like the sweet potatos the best.

This will be my first Christmas alone without my family. I am thinking of making my mom's lasagna to remind me of home.
we normally have ham... but, this year, we are going with turkey

I play the organ in church, so I am super busy for the holidays. My husband traditionally makes a wonderful glazed ham, twice baked potatoes, and asparagus au gratin, followed by mountains of cookies.

This year for the holiday we are having Lasagna and Chicken cutlet parmigana. There are always lots of desserts but a favorite is ice box cake topped with whip cream.
We have slow cooked beef brisket! Not a traditional meal... but we are not big ham or turkey eaters! :)

Luckily the holiday meal I'm cooking this year is breakfast on Christmas morning! Christmas Eve my mom is making a pork roast with sides, and my very favorite, shrimp cocktail as an appetizer :)
We have a little baby this year, so we will probably go out to eat. I cooked on Thanksgiving and it was way too stressful. In past years we've had turkey, ham, mashed potatoes, and crescent rolls.

We'll have the traditional turkey and dressing (yes, at Christmas too) and a big ol' ham - because we have a BIG family! And of course all the fixings that go along, like raisin pie and fruit salad and deviled eggs. Mmmm, I'm getting hungry just thinking about it. :)

We are doing things different this year. Normally we Spend Christmas with family, but this year we will be home. I am making brunch which will consist of ham, some sort of quiche and eggnog bread. For dinner, I am surprising my family with crab legs, paired with baby potatoes and a spinach salad.

Christmas Eve our tradition is Sfinconi. Kind of a cross between foccacia and pizza. It's served cold so everyone can help themselves whenever while they finish up gift wrapping and such. I also have a veggie tray and cheese tray. Christmas day is usually ham or turkey. Whatever I can get for the best price. If I get ham, the day after Christmas is Split Pea Soup (cooked with the ham bone.)

I cook a small turkey and a spiral ham. Then we have stuffing, butternut squash, mashed potatoes, and another vegetable. We have pies and cookies for dessert and we always have our traditional English Crackers (the kind that you pull open and have prizes in side) with dessert.

Our holiday meal this year is a little different -- it's something my husband really wanted. It's a very simple casserole with the following layers x2:
tomato sauce
sliced polenta
flattened, breaded, baked chicken tenders
more sauce
shredded mozzarella
It's very comforting and easy to make, and as we've already done turkey and ham, and my husband wasn't interested in a roast this year, it should be a nice change of pace. We'll do a side of sauteed spinach with lemon and parmesan, and wine to drink. Thank you for this giveaway!
