All Home clearance is 50% the lowest marked price!

Don't forget to use your reward coupons - you should have already received them! If you have not received them yet, be sure to contact Fred Meyer!

Unfamiliar with Fred Meyer's coupon policy? They allow you stack a Fred Meyer store coupon (FM coupons as I call them) with a manufacturer's coupon. They do not price match to any other store's sale prices, and they won't take other store's sale coupons. You can however use a manufacturer's coupons on any sale or clearance items, but they usually won't allow any overage if the coupon is more than the sale price (sometimes it slips through the cracks, but don't expect it every time). Our local Washington stores do not double any coupons. They do accept the printed internet coupons if they have a barcode (like bricks coupons or from Smart Source or coupons.com if you are unfamiliar with them) so if you are having problems with a clerk not wanting to accept your coupon and you are sure it's legit coupon, please ask to have a manager come on over to verify it.

Albertsons Soup Deal Stock Up Opportunity

Through Tuesday (3/3), Albertsons has their store brand of condensed Tomato and Chicken Noodle soups on sale 3 for $1, with a limit of 12.

The cans I purchased today do not expire until 2011! This is a great opportunity to stock up your pantry at a great price, without even having to use coupons!

Save-A-Lot Coupon Deal 2/28 Only!

I'm not sure if this is Washington only, but if you visit Save-A-Lot's website you can print a coupon that will give you items to make an Italian dinner for free. It's valid tomorrow, February 28th 2009 only, from 8 AM until noon for the first 1000 people to visit each store.

Included are garlic breadsticks, spagetti, two cans of vegetables, and pasta sauce. If you don't normally purchase these items and won't use them, think of stopping by and redeeming the coupon to donate to a local food bank.

Recipe: Brie Stuffed Mushroom Chicken

Trust me, this is one that will be thoroughly enjoyed. While it isn't exactly a frugal recipe, you can often find brie marked down to under $3 near it's end date. I bought a large wheel for $1.49 when I made this recipe, and had plenty left over for cheese and crackers.

brie
12 oz fresh sliced mushrooms
1 lb boneless skinless chicken breasts
olive oil

Saute the mushrooms in a generous serving of olive oil. Put aside, and preheat the oven at 350 degrees.

Slice the brie into thin quarter inch wide slices.

Next flatten the chicken breasts either using a mallet or a plastic covered rolling pin. If you have very thicken chicken breasts, you may just want to make a slit in the thickest part.

Take the flattened chicken and wrap it around a thin slice of the brie. (If you made slits, stuff the brie in the slit)

Place them in a glass baking dish and drizzle with olive oil.

Cover with the sauteed mushrooms, and bake for 25-30 minutes.

This goes great with asparagus!

Costs:
brie $1.49-$2.99
chicken $1.99 - $2.99
mushrooms $1-2
olive oil $0.25
Total: $4.73 - $8.23

This Is NOT A Confession!

I am innocent! I did not just snack gobble stuff my face eat an entire bag of Dove Dark Chocolates in less than a day.

No, it wasn't me! There's no photographic evidence of empty wrappers or the bag, so you can't prove it!

Oink, oink!

Asparagus In Your Kitchen 101 (With Recipes!)

Asparagus is in season right now - this week it's on sale for $0.98 lb at Safeway, which is a really good price! If you buy out of season, it can cost you as much as $4 a pound.

When purchasing asparagus, you'll want to choose a thinner, evenly colored batch that is as green as possible when buying it. Keep it moist in the fridge - wrap it in a paper towel or in a brown paper lunch bag before placing it in your vegetable crisper drawer in your fridge. It's great to be served with fish for Lent, or with chicken too.

Lightly wash the asparagus by swooshing it in a sink or large pot of water. Make sure the tips are cleaned. You'll want to cut the bottom tips off after you are done.

You can steam it, standing it upright in a large pot if you'd like. This is my favorite way to prepare asparagus for our family:

Spray a cookie sheet with a cooking spray. Lay the asparagus on the sheet singly, and drizzle with olive oil and a bit of salt and pepper if desired. Roast in the oven at 450 for 10-15 minutes depending on width of the asparagus. You can even sprinkle it with a bit of Parmesan cheese! Mine's a little wider in the picture so I roasted mine for 15 minutes.

Another really yummy way (unfortunately, no pictures at the moment) to use the asparagus: Flatten boneless skinless chicken breasts, and place a slice of swiss cheese on top. Roll around 2-3 (depending on how wide they are vs length of chicken) asparagus shoots. Next, wrap a slice of bacon around the rolled up chicken, and tie off with a piece of kitchen twine (food grade!) Bake at 350 degrees for 25 minutes.

Review: K9Cuisine

The Pudgy Princess received a box filled with goodies from K9Cuisine. Girlfriend thought it was Christmas! LOL

K9Cuisine offers only the highest quality pet products. (Cat owners: don't run away yet - they also carry kitty food, so you can shop them too!) Many of the products they carry are human grade, something which is very important to me after that horrible pet food recall several years ago.

I encourage you that if you have any questions, or are looking to switch your pet(s) to a different food, to drop their customer service a line or call them - they'll help you find the right food for the furry members of your family. Especially if you and your pet are dealing with a food allergy - I've been there in the past, and I know how frustrating it is to find a food that won't make it worse (and expensive trying many different brands!)

Nothing comes between the Pudgy Princess and her cookies, but if she doesn't like a treat, she's not going to eat it. A princess has to have discriminating taste, right?

Here's a run down on some of products she tried:

Plato Dog Treats Duck Strips: They look almost like mini jerky strips. Just the right size for the Pudgy Princess, they are made with no artificial preservatives and no by products. They are also high in protein. Plus, they come in a resealable bag. (Happy corgi!)

Wagatha's Tuscan Tomato treats: Bone shaped, these arrived in a 9 oz cylinder container. Wheat free makes them perfect for doggies with allergies, and they are of course organic. I think this container was gone in a day, she loved them so much!

NatureNosh Gourmet Treats - Chicken Parmesan flavor: I'd actually never heard of this organic brand before. They are also teeny tiny bone shaped cookies, making them great for smaller dogs or doggies that need to watch their waistline. They arrive in a round jar with a lid. I've got to tell you, these smell something incredible! You'll want to snack on them they smell that good. ;)

Australian Pet Foods Kangaroo Tail Twin Pack: I'll admit, I kind of cringed when I saw these in the box. I wasn't so keen on the idea of my dog chomping on part of a cuddly 'roo. Now, these bones, she had help from my parent's corgi, Toby Won Kenobi. This was a two pack, and we were visiting, so we shared. Toby thought he won the lottery - he took off with that bone, and we didn't see him for a half an hour which says something. He's just a pup, and has a great set of chompers. In fact when Pudgy Princess got bored, Toby stole hers and finished it off! Tell me this isn't dog heaven for these two:

Wellness Core Ocean Formula (kibble): We actually feed the petting zoo Wellness most of the time, so this wasn't anything new to them. This particular formula is grain free. It's great for dogs with allergies (which is actually how I was introduced to the brand years ago, with one of our other corgis) I'm a firm believe in that good quality dog food, while it may be more expensive, actually saves you money in the long run - not only does your dog get full on less, but it does cut down on some of the health problems associated with extra junk and calories in lower brands.

Burns Brown Rice & Ocean Fish (kibble): I used this as a treat, giving Pudgy a piece as a reward. Let me tell you, she LOVED this! In fact, Daddy says we have to order more. ;) Again, it contains no corn, wheat, or soy, and is human grade.

Orijen Adult Formula (kibble): Again, another dry dog food free of animal by-products and other unnecessary junky fillers. It's made out of 70% Premium Animal Ingredients and no grain - another good one for allergy prone dogs.

Everything arrived packaged carefully and safely. K9Cuisine's prices are on par with all the local haunts for different foods, and even better, they have free shipping on orders of $50 (which we quickly hit with this zoo) Plus, they almost always ship out on the same day which is good if you are like me, and realize you are almost at the bottom of the bag. ;)

Right now, through May 14th, you can enter to win a $250 gift card from K9Cuisine, as well as other prizes up for grabs, by uploading a 3 minute or less video to YouTube showing how much you love your pets, and including the K9Cuisine logo. Visit the website for more details.

Thrift Store Tuesday

Welcome to Thrift Store Tuesday, where you can show off your favorite find while thrifting this week.

My question this week: Have you ever stalked another shopper through the store because they had something in their cart you wanted, and you were hopping they'd take it out of the cart?

I'll admit it - I've done it multiple times. One time, I spent an extra 20 minutes following around a couple of college girls around Goodwill who were giggling and carrying around a pair of super high heel (7") flaming red Fredrick's of Hollywood platform sandals. The second the girl put them down, I snatched them up and RAN to the counter! (I'd take a picture, because I know some of you would get a laugh out of them) I don't think they had ever been worn out of the house, so I landed practically brand new $60 shoes for $3.99. Score!

This is my best find this week - a brand new Pampered Chef star form marked 75% off, so I got it for $1.25! As some of you probably know, I heart PC!

Did you find something good this week?

Preparedness Tuesday: The Pantry

It's Preparedness Tuesday - each Tuesday I post one thing you can do to help prepare you and your family for everyday disasters - be it job loss, bad weather (between being stuck in the middle of hurricane season, and the coming colder winter we're predicted), or even that ugly recession they keep talking about (blech!)

This week I am talking about keeping a well stocked pantry. I know someone out there is asking, what does this have to do with preparedness?

You should keep at least a week's worth of food on hand, preferably two weeks. This gives you a cushion if the weather is bad due to storms, funds are low due to emergency expenses or job loss, or you just plain don't want to drive to the grocery store (and all us Moms feel that way sometimes!)

Stick to foods that your family enjoys, because you want to actually use the food not let it go to waste. Canned goods are a great addition since you don't have to worry about them going bad as quickly as fresh foods, nor do you have to worry about them spoiling if you loose the power like freezer foods.

A few suggestions:

an extra jar of peanut butter
crackers
several cans of soup
a can or two of canned pasta (high in sodium, but as a treat for the kids when you don't feel like cooking, it can be a lifesaver!)
several cans of fruit and vegetables
a small box or packet of dried milk

You can easily build up an extra stash by just purchasing one or two extra items on each shopping trip. It doesn't have to add much extra to your shopping bill - for instance, Fred Meyer's has had their store brand Cream of Mushroom soup on sale for 2/$1 all winter. (a great savings since as you know, most Cream Of soups tend to retail for about $1.39) Depending on your family size, there's a meal or two right there for around $1.

One extra thing you may want to consider as part of your pantry: toilet paper. Who wants to go out in lousy weather just to get that? ;)

Review & Giveaway: Country Bob's All Purpose Sauce

As anyone who's checked out my recipes has probably noticed, I love spices and sauces in our kitchen. I also happen to love trying new things in my kitchen, so I was happy to try out Country Bob's All Purpose Sauce.

Country Bob's was started back in 1968 when Country Bob Edson created his All Purpose Sauce. By 1977, he decided to turn his addicting sauce into a business. Today, there's several more additions to the Country Bob line, but this review is all about the All Purpose Sauce. ;)

DH comes a family of BBQers. Seriously, my in laws take any excuse to throw a BBQ (it's a Texas thing) and my DH takes grilling VERY seriously. Since when I hear all purpose sauce I think of steaks, I let him pick out a couple of fresh steaks at the store for us to try Country Bob's All Purpose Sauce on first. He marinated them a few hours before grilling it inside on our indoor grill.

The steak melted in our mouths. DH said he wished he had bought more steaks so he could have had seconds!

My second go at using Country Bob's was in a meatball recipe, posted on here earlier. I ended up turning them into meatball subs. Again, we really enjoyed the way it turned out with the sauce!

It also makes a great dip for your steak fries (and other such goodies)

Now you can purchase all of Country Bob's sauces, as well as a cookbook full of recipes using Country Bob products online, or you can visit here and check out what stores in your area carry them. (WA people: we're stuck ordering online. No one carries them. You can ask your favorite grocery store to carry Country Bob's though - maybe if enough of us ask Fred Meyer, they will!)

Win it! The great folks at Country Bob's are graciously letting me give away two bottles of their All Purpose Sauce to two of my lucky readers! To enter, pop on over to Country Bob's recipe section and pick out which recipe you'd like to try first if you win. Pretty please, give us more than one or two words with your entry - if you just put down "steak" for instance, you'll make me want to turn you into a toad! ;)

Because I'm a little psychotic as you know, I'll give anyone FIVE extra entries if they A) go to their local store that carries Country Bob's and take a picture of themselves with a bottle of All Purpose Sauce or B) takes a picture of themselves with their request for their local grocery store to carry Country Bob's (most stores have a comment card located at their customer service desk for asking for new products) and post those pictures on their blog with a link to this blog and Country Bob's. (Hey, it makes things interesting!)

Of course, the usual extra entries apply:

*blog about this giveaway with a link to my blog
*Stumble, Digg, Kirtsy etc this blog with a review (leave your username, I do check!)
*Follow this blog, subscribe to the feed, or add it to your Technorati favs.

This ends next Monday night, March 2nd, at 11:59 PM PST. Alas, US only as I am not doing the shipping. Good luck! :)

Recipe: Slow Cooker Country Bob Meatballs

Here's my version of meatballs in a slow cooker using Country Bob's sauce as part of my review & giveaway. I suggest using a pair of food service gloves to mix the ingredients and shape the meatballs. A box doesn't cost very much and will last ages in your kitchen. This is also an excellent recipe to sneak some TVP in. ;) (Note: I froze half my meatballs so the cookie sheet pic is half a recipe - you'll have more!)

2 lb ground beef
1/2 onion
1 garlic glove
3 tablespoons cumin
1 tablespoon pepper flakes
1/8th cup beef broth or water
1 cup bread crumbs
1 bottle Country Bob's All Purpose Sauce.

First, attack your onion. By going on the offensive, it won't make your eyes water so much (peel under cold running water, have the stove fan going while dicing, and keep your hands away from your face the entire time you work with the onion) You'll want to make sure it's diced small (or, be lazy like apparently I was now that I look back at the photos and realize my onion was a little chunkier than I normally like. Oops!)

Dice the garlic clove and add with the onion in a large mixing bowl. (In a pinch you can use garlic powder, which is what I did) Next add the pepper flakes, cumin and bread crumbs, followed by the (raw) ground beef. Mix this very well with your hands. (You may want to let the beef sit out while you are dicing the onion and garlic so your hands don't turn to ice from the straight out of the fridge beef)

Have a cookie sheet out, and squish your meatballs into the size you desire. Hint: smaller meatballs cook faster. (please ignore the scary looking sheet)

Spray your crock pot with Pam (or similar cooking spray), add the broth/water, a bit of olive oil if desired, and a good dollop of Country Bob's All Purpose Sauce, and mix. Add the meatballs in. I like to roll my meatballs in the sauce that's started.

After all the meatballs are in, add the rest of the Country Bob's sauce. Be generous.

Cook on low. Depending on the size of your meatballs, anywhere from 4-7 hours. If you're impatient, you can cook on high for several hours and then finish it off on low.

I had a free loaf of Albertsons French Bread so I turned these into meatball subs with a slice of swiss. Yummy!

Cost of meatballs:
2 lbs ground beef $4
onion $0.25
spices, broth & bread crumbs $0.25
Country Bob's sauce $4
Total: $8.50 (less if ground beef is on sale!)
servings: 5-7

Review: OrbitBrush

I was really excited when I heard about OrbitBrush and was lucky enough to get to review it! My hair is thinner (and frizzy!) but it's long - down to my waist. It gets tangled something fierce. In fact, I haven't used a hair brush on it in years. To detangle, it takes ages with a good batch of deep conditioner on my hair and a strong wide tooth comb. My back usually aches when I am done from bending over trying to get those darn knots out!

The OrbitBrush promises it can get rid of any tangle painlessly in 3 minutes or less. It has a patent pending, independently rotating wheels that start to spin when it hits a knot or tangle in your hair. It was created by George, a Daddy who brushed his two daughters hair every day. He thought there had to be a better way - and after a bit of tinkering, the OrbitBrush was born!

At first glace of the brush handle, you may think it uses batteries, but it doesn't. It brushes around the tangles, gently releasing the hair. The tangles get smaller with each repeated stroke of the brush down your hair.

I decided to let DH be the guinea pig with my hair so I could feel how it felt to be on the receiving end with someone else brushing my hair. We tried at the end of the day, so my hair definitely had it's share of tangles. It took him a few tries at adjusting it the first time we used it so it didn't pull, but I have to say I was really surprised at how quickly it took every tangle out. Within 5 minutes, it was done. (compared to around 20 minutes with the comb)

I did loose some hair in the brush as you can see in the photo, but I loose much, much more with a comb. Plus, when DH was done, I pulled on my hair a little and no hair came out in my hands. Normally after I comb it, I'd have strands of hair in my hands.

Because it works so quickly, this is just perfect to use on a squirming girls hair. Even the worst of tangles could come out in minutes with very little hassle.

And because the OrbitBrush gets rid of tangles so easily, it cuts down on the amount of products you need to use on your hair. It saves money not buying detangler, and it also helps the environment because all those chemicals aren't going down the drain when you wash it. The box it arrives in can also be recycled. (no cutting your hands on hard plastic!)

I'd never have considered brushing my hair so often before I tried the OrbitBrush. I'm actually looking for an excuse right now just to brush it (as my readers probably already know, I'm a little strange like that) I can feel the difference in my hair by using it - I'm not having to weigh it down with a deep conditioner every time I wash it just to get the knots out! (and now that I am used to it and have adjusted it, it only takes a minute or two to brush my hair)

OrbitBrush was also recently featured on The Today Show! You can purchase it online and it will be shipped straight to your doorstep. Visit their website for a fun video showing some serious knots and the OrbitBrush in action!

That's True Love!

For the last few weeks between my allergies, a cold, and rampant asthma attacks, I can't say my housekeeping skills have been a work of art. I'll be honest, my Lysol wipes have become my best friend, and I've been wiping down things and Swiffering it as best as I can.

I tried to clean the shower last week and ending up hacking away for awhile. In fact, I partially blame Scrubbing Bubbles for my trip to Urgent Care last week (I know, I know, I should have just used vinegar and baking soda to clean it) lol

Fast forward to yesterday, and the shower still hadn't been cleaned. It's not that it was bad by any means, but the EWWW factor was kicking in for me regardless.

My dear sweet husband snuck into the bathroom while I was doing the FM ads last night and cleaned the shower! He even Swiffered the floor for me!

A man cleaning willingly is true sexiness, sí? ;) I told him he needs to do this more often! LOL!

Recipe: Slow Cooker Orange Roast

This is a simple way to have a really great meal with little work (my favorite!) The reason I am not putting the amount of carrots & potatoes is that you'll want to match the servings to the size of the roast. I would suggest a good roast somewhere between 2 to 4 pounds depending on how many people you will be having for dinner. I believe the one I used in the photos was just over 2 pounds.

pork or beef roast
potatoes
carrots
1/2 - 1 cup vegetable broth (or bullion cube with water)
orange sauce

Cube the potatoes and place them on the bottom of the crock pot, followed by the chunks of carrots. Feel free to substitute a bag of baby carrots instead.

Add the vegetable broth. For a 3 pound roast with 6-8 potatoes and 5-6 carrots I suggest using at least one cup of broth.

Next, rub the roast with a generous serving of the orange sauce (this can be found in the Asian food aisles.) If you'd like, pour some over the veggies before placing the roast down on top. Add more sauce if desired.

Cook on low for 8-10 hours. This one's a definite all day cooker, I don't suggest using it on high. Halfway through you can add more sauce if desired again (do it quickly because remember the heat will escape once you remove the lid) I added a little extra sauce just before serving instead.

I've got to tell you, the aroma from this will make your tummy growl all day long. It's a great one to come home to.

Costs:
meat - $4-12 depending on your cut. Mine was marked down to $3.24
potatoes $0.75
carrots $0.50
broth $0.50 (max)
orange sauce $1.00
total: $5.99 (or less depending on sales) for 6-8 servings up to $14.75 for a pricier roast

All Home clearance is 40% the lowest marked price! Valentine's clearance is 75% off as of Sunday.

For more sites listing other stores sales ads and coupon match ups, please visit BeCentsAble - home of the original Grocery Gathering!

Printable Cetaphil Coupon

Here's a great printable coupon for $1 off any Cetaphil product, and it doesn't expire until the end of 2010! It's in PDF form, so I suggest you print this one in color to cut down on any hassles redeeming your coupon. It also prints on two pages, so you may want to skip printing page 1 to save on ink costs.

Welcome to my Friday's Featured post, in which I showcase Etsy stores and small businesses from folks like you and me. Recession, smession! ;)

This week's feature is an Etsy store called Caroneko's Crafts. All their jewelry arrives in pretty little Oriental style pouches, making them perfect for gift giving!

Check out these lovely earrings called Aqua:

My favorite pair are these ones called Valentine:

I also love this pair, entitled Starstruck:

She also makes lovely handpainted knobs, such as this Swirled knob:

Thrifty Thursday - Spring Gardening

This week's Thrifty Thursday post is about getting ready for spring gardening. It's time to start your seedlings!

Check out your local dollar store for seeds and plastic planters. Even if you live in an apartment with little room, you can still start a small windowsill planter with fresh herbs such as parsley and basil for your kitchen. Empty cat litter buckets make great porch and balcony planters for no cost to grow tomatoes and peppers in. Even if you don't have a cat, chances are someone you know does - just ask them to keep an empty bucket or two. (I know we are swimming in them!) You can even ask on Freecycle or Craigslist!

One or two tomato plants at a cost of around $2 for a planter, a small bag of dirt, and a package of seeds could take care of your tomato or pepper needs all summer long!

I Confess...

as a little girl I was totally obsessed with the play (and movie) Annie. I mean completely and utterly OBSESSED. I wanted to play Annie, and I was convinced I could belt out Tomorrow like there was no tomorrow.

Oh, I could sing back then, that wasn't the problem. Looking like Annie? Now that was a problem. Even with a wig, I guarantee I was not going to pass as Annie. I mean Annie looked like this:

I looked like this:

Sigh!

But I still love it, just the same, even 20 plus years later. So when I came across a copy of the Annie soundtrack on clearance for $1 the other day, I had to grab it, if just to annoy DH. (I blame you if our daughter becomes obsessed with this movie, he grumbled)

Then as I was listening to the lyrics of It's The Hard Knock Life, I suddenly realized it could be the Murphy's Law theme song! Maybe I was onto something!

Don't if feel like the wind is always howl'n?
Don't it seem like there's never any light!
Once a day, don't you wanna throw the towel in?

So maybe I should sing Tomorrow instead?

The sun'll come out
Tomorrow
So ya gotta hang on
'Til tomorrow
Come what may
Tomorrow! Tomorrow!
I love ya Tomorrow!
You're always
A day
A way!

(Yes, I am sorely lacking sleep)
