Review And Giveaway: Fiber One Yogurt

MyBlogSpark recently asked me if I wanted to try Yoplait's Fiber One yogurt. We live on yogurt around here, so of course I said yes!

Fiber One yogurt recently received a "seal of approval" from best-selling author and food expert Lisa Lillien, AKA Hungry Girl. (I'm sure you've seen her posts linked on Yahoo's main page from time to time?)

Fiber One yogurt is a smaller serving size, and has just 50 calories, making it a great low calorie healthy snack for you and your family. It also has 5 grams of fiber in each serving, making it a delicious way to get some extra fiber in. It's available in Strawberry, Peach, Vanilla and Key Lime Pie. I'm all about the Strawberry! It tastes like an indulgent treat, not like something that's healthy for you. Confession: I've sat down and eaten two at once - they were so yummy, I couldn't help myself! (Oink oink over here! lol Hey, it was only 100 calories combined, less than other brands... so it wasn't that bad... right?)

If you'd like to try Fiber One for yourself, they have a printable coupon to save $1.00 off any flavor! Combine that with a good sale, and you could score it for about 25 cents a serving! (You can't beat that!) Savings tip: You know how sometimes you see yogurt marked down near it's sell by date? Well, yogurt is usually good for 7 days PAST that mark! Combine that with the coupon, and you can be ending up with almost free yogurt! Recession, smession!

Win it! Wahoo, I get to give THREE lucky readers a fun "Healthy & Fit Weight Management" gift bag that includes a Fiber One yogurt coupon good for a free 4-pack of Fiber One yogurt, lunch size cooler pack, and other storage items for you to carry your snacks and yogurt in (there's a three part bowl with lid perfect to freeze a meal in and take with you to work or school!) To enter, I'd like to know what your favorite snack is, and which flavor you'll choose if you win!

Book Review: Secrets of a Christmas Box by Steven Hornby

What would you think, if all your Christmas ornaments and decorations had a life of their own?

I recently had the pleasure of reading a delightful new holiday fantasy book called Secrets of a Christmas Box, by Steven Hornby. I'll admit it: the cover reeled me in, in two seconds flat. I saw the little elf with the snowman, and it looked fun. (I know, never judge a book by its cover, but I was right on this one!)

Larry, the Christmas snowman wakes up from his sleep in the magical Christmas Box (hence, the title) and discovers his brother Terrence is missing. Larry enlists the help of Debbie - a plastic elf/reindeer girl, Tinsel - Larry's companion, and Splint -a painted wooden soldier to find him. Here's the thing: they are not supposed leave the tree and wander through the house - it's against the laws of the "Tree-Elders"!

Yes, they are all Christmas tree ornaments!

Along the way they find out a not-so-wonderful secret that could ruin their entire world, and the Christmas crew must make it back to the tree without being spotted.

Remember the magic you felt as a child when you would look at the decorated holiday tree? This book really brings that magic alive. I think Secrets of a Christmas Box is a wonderful read for the holidays! (Back to the illustrations: there are small black and white drawings throughout the book, making it an even faster read.)

Secrets of a Christmas Box is geared for ages 8 to 12 (though, parents may want to read it aloud to a slightly younger crowd (there are a few scary parts, no worse than a Disney movie) if they want, and you'll probably enjoy it just as much as your kids will!), and it's available in bookstores September 1st, 2009. You can also purchase a special gift set online using PayPal that includes a signed edition of the book!

Here's a little promo trailer advertising the book, if you're interested:

Cedar Cove Festival

This past week, Port Orchard's been in a tizzy over hosting the Cedar Cove Days. The popular author, Debbie Macomber, based a lot of her novels on here, renaming it Cedar Cove. (I've just recently learned all this myself, lol)

A few weeks back, the radio host Deliah offered to pay for all the paint to spiffy up the downtown area in preparation for this festival - I'll be honest, I think they should have left it. It took away the character of the town - the character the books were based on really. But here's a few photos from when we braved the parking nightmare downtown...

Here's one of Sydney Avenue, with the popular local restaurant Myrhe's:

There was also a little art & crafts fair on the waterfront:

You can see the Court House peeking here, and the lovely Washington sky to greet everyone. ;)

Dropped Your Cell Phone In Water?

I don't even want to admit how many times it's happened to me. Some of the newer phones may not survive the plunge, but you can always try! Here's what to do:

Dry it off with a towel immediately. Take the back off and remove the battery right away! Set both pieces down on another dry, clean towel, and let them dry for several days. Don't put the battery back in until at least 48 hours have passed!

Contest: Dole Bowl-A-Day Challenge

I really like Dole's fruit bowls. Not only are they great from a preparedness point of view - they're a good way to make sure you or family keep up with their fruit intake during a power loss for a few days, no can opener needed - but they are an easy way to get a fruit serving in each day. You can easily pack them in a lunch, or snack on them while watching TV or on the computer! I take advantage when they are on sale, and stock up with several packages. My favorite is the Mandarin Oranges - yummy! - but the Tropical Fruit are just as scrumptious.

Dole Fruit Bowls were even awarded the ChefsBest award by the American Culinary ChefsBest.

Earlier this month, Dole launched the DOLE Bowl-A-Day Challenge, at www.DoleChallenge.com

Register to explore the Dole Kitchen at www.DoleChallenge.com, where you have 3 chances to win some great prizes: Give a tip on how you enjoy Dole Fruit Bowls for a chance to win $300, challenge your friends to play along for another chance to win $1000, and even better: reward yourself and download a FREE coupon!

If you'd like to try Dole's All Natural Fruit Jars, for a larger portion to serve as dessert during meal time, you can print a coupon to save $0.75 off two jars!

Become Greener For Back To School (And Save Money Too!)

It's super easy to get a little greener for back to school lunches! Here's some ideas for you:

Carry a re-useable lunch bag instead of paper bags. Try to find one that is BPA free if you can, and of course, remember buying a better quality lunch bag may cost more in the beginning, but chances are, it will last longer - keeping it out of the landfills. Tip: Have your children empty the bag out as soon as they come home, and leave the bag open overnight to cut down on smells.

Use plastic containers that you can re-use over and over again, instead of using plastic bags. They come in all sorts of different shapes and sizes, and end up being cheaper in the long run! Tip: check out your local dollar store to keep costs down. We even found small ones to hold dips and salad dressings in!

If you have to use plastic sandwich bags, try a brand that is made of recycled plastic such as Ziploc's new Evolve bags.

Use fun mini cloth napkins instead of paper napkins. Have a set of 5-6 for each child, and just wash them like you would any other piece of clothing. No one says they have to be ironed, and folded perfectly, right? ;)

Purchase silverware at the dollar store or yard sales and thrift stores to use, instead of buying cheap plastic ware. This way, you won't get upset if your nice set is accidentally thrown away, but disposable ones aren't being thrown away every day.

Thrifty Thursday - Check 'Em To Save!

This week for my Thrifty Thursday post, I'm talking about a reminder to sit down with all your bills, and check over them carefully. You really should do this once a month.

First of all, make sure you're not being charged for something you shouldn't be. I know I've seen in the past tiny charges onto my credit card that shouldn't be there! Companies count on your glancing over your statements every month, and not noticing that extra $3 fee for such-and-such program.

Next, go over bills such as cell phones and cable. Are you on the right plan? Could you get a discount if you switch to a different plan or combine services? If you're staying home more in the evenings as winter is on us soon enough, and you're watching more movies - maybe taking advantage of a free trial of HBO etc to get a lower priced plan for a few months is worth it for you? See what your cable or satellite company will offer! (Just remember to write on the calender what day you need to cancel it!)

Don't forget to do the same with your receipts when you come home from shopping! It's very easy to get double charged for an item with scanners these days.

Even if you only save $5 a month, it's something - right? :)

Psst: Don't forget Labor Day sales are almost upon us! Take advantage of these sales to stock up for winter and spring on items such as condiments, napkins, etc, and clearance sales for next summer on BBQ supplies such as charcoal! You will not find better deals until Memorial Day sales next year - and why pay more during winter if you don't have to? Just watch the Use By dates on whatever food products you purchase, and keep the shorter dates to use right away!

Shopping Feature: Bubblecakes Baby Blankets

As you'll probably guess if you look around on their site, this Pink and Brown Zebra Minky blanket is the one I covet most for the munchkin right now:

Bubblecakes has graciously offered a 15% discount on any blanket purchase until December 31st, 2009! (Plenty of time to snag one as a shower gift or for a holiday gift?) Use promo code PHW15 at checkout to receive it!

MyBlogSpark recently gave me a chance to try out some of the Yoplait Whips! yogurts.

Actually, I was already a big fan of the Whips! before they even asked. Let me share with you my favorite little yogurt indulgence:

Yes, that's Chocolate Mousse Style yogurt! It is drool worthy! (So is the Chocolate Raspberry, mmmm!)

Yoplait Whips! are available in: Strawberry Mist, Chocolate, Key Lime Pie, Orange Crème, Chocolate Raspberry, Lemon Burst, Peaches 'N Cream, Raspberry Mousse, and the newest flavor - Vanilla Creme.

Yoplait is encouraging us to try freezing our favorite Whips! flavor for an indulgent cold snack. Just remove it 5 minutes or so before eating from the freezer, and viola'! A lower calorie frozen snack. (in my case, chocolatey goodness!)

Now while I enjoyed my Whips! frozen, I've got to admit I know I'm lazy, and I like it from the fridge just as much.

If you'd like to try Yoplait Whips! frozen, or out of the fridge, you can print a coupon to save $0.60 off your next purchase of any 3 Whips! Totally Random Thoughts Tuesday

randomtuesday

Today is like Christmas! Seriously, later today we are getting a new to us mattress set (considering the awful one that we've had since we moved to WA is as old as me... yeah... getting a bed manufactured in this century is like winning the lottery!), a bigger sofa that I'm sure the corgis will furball in 2 seconds flat, and the cats are scoring themselves another big perch! (Yes, there's more furniture for the pets in my house than for us at that point I think lol)

Speaking of the corgis, they are still doing good! Very clingy, and we're still working on the whole coming when called issue, but we're getting there. WalMart/Mystery's doing good too - we're goning to get her in the be spayed in the next few weeks. I seriously need frequent vet miles or something, with the tabs our pets run up!

Lacuna Coil's "Spellbound" is permanently stuck in my head. I don't really even like them, but DH does. He says he'd leave me for Christina... that's alright, because I tell him I'd leave him for NIN's Trent Reznor all the time. ;)

DH officially got sort of a raise. I say sort of, because as most of you know, he has taken several pay cuts over the last year. Now they are bumping him back up to what it was before the last cut. Yay for a small break our way!

Still haven't found the pots, or a lot of my kitchen stuff. Booo! I keep opening totes of books and movies. (PR folks and kitchen supply owners: seriously, now is the time to ask me to review your stuff! LOL) I did find silverware, some Pyrex for baking, and my mixing bowl, so that already makes me happy!

...with this we did come to the conclusion that if we got rid of all the munchkin's stuff, we'd have 2/3rds of our house back. It must multiply in our sleep! LOL

We also need to clear out the VHS collection and get up to date. I don't mind a few, but we have way too many, and they take up waaaay too much room on the shelves. I think we also need a better DVD shelf than the bookshelf we have been using.

It keeps raining, so we have to keep moving boxes and totes in and out off the deck. I am annoyed.

I am also starving, and out of caffeine. Not a good combination! Mamma needs a Diet Dr Pepper, STAT!

Raise your hand if you're sick and tired of seeing Jon and/or Kate on the gossip pages. Who cares already? I want real gossip!

Review & Blog Tour: Oscar Mayer Lunchables Combinations

Mom Central recently asked me if I wanted to be a part of the Oscar Mayer Lunchables Combinations Blog Tour. We buy a lot of Lunchables here, so I happily said yes!

Actually, we're probably a little different than most families purchasing Lunchables: it's not the kids asking for them, it's my DH! LOL! I know, we're never going to grow up in this family. (Having a munchkin was the excuse to go all out on the toy department and play ourselves, right? lol)

Regardless of who is eating Lunchables in my house, as a Mom, it makes me happy to see more 100% Juice and whole grain options in the Lunchables line.

Now while I will say Lunchables can get rather expensive if you are sending them on a daily basis (the regular price of the one I am showing in my post was $3.99!), as a fun treat, especially for field trips and special occasions, Lunchables are absolutely perfect. The Combinations are a quick and easy way to make sure everything is in the lunch for your kids - everything from a snack, to a drink, to the main course. It's very easy to take along and have ready for meal or snack time. (this is why DH loves them so much - he has everything in one convenient box ready for his breaks at work)

And to make the FTC happy:
“I wrote this review while participating in a blog tour by Mom Central on behalf of Oscar Mayer Lunchables and received a sample to facilitate my candid review. In addition, Mom Central sent me a gift card to thank me for taking the time to participate.”

Shopping Feature & Giveaway: Pigtail Pals

I'll be the first one to admit that I've been swept up in the pink and princess girly stuff. Guilty as charged!

But I'm also the first one to stand in line for children's creativity. As far as my daughter is concerned, she can be ANYTHING she wants to be! I may be a SAHM now, but in the past I've ran my own business, traveled the world by myself, etc. If my daughter wants to be president, guess who will be right behind her for her campaign? You bet that's me, the crazy Mami behind her! ;)

When I first came across Pigtail Pals, I thought the designs were FUN! The slogan is Redefining Girly, and it suits this brand just perfectly.

Pigtail Pals is the business baby of Melissa, a fellow Mom who became a Mompreneur. One day it hit her when she was tired of all the pink and princess stuff, that maybe she could Redefine Girly with her daughter, and other girls, and show the world that they can expect the same thing from their daughters as they do their sons. The shirts show girls that they can be anything they dream to be!

My favorite design is the Astronaut tee:

Remember the Space Camp craze back in the 80's? That was the first thing I thought of when I saw this design. It even says When You Wish Upon A Star on it!

Every month, Pigtail Pals donates to a different charity. For the month of August, it's Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation.

Win it! Pigtail Pals is generously giving one of my readers their choice of any shirt in any size from the store! To enter, visit the website and tell us: Which design do you feel does the best job of Redefining Girly for young girls?

I'll give you a bonus entry if you tell Melissa what design you'd like to see her create next!

As always, you can receive extra entries for:
-Subscribing to my feed or following my blog
-Blogging about this giveaway with a link back
-Tweeting about this giveaway (leave the link or @psychotichouse me)
-Add my blog to your Technorati favs (leave your username)

Giveaway ends September 5th at 11:59 PM PST! US only, sorry :( Good luck everyone!! :)

I Confess...

I am a sort of successful recovering spendaholic. Yes, long before my frugal ways - saving money? It just wasn't in my game plan. Sure, I was the kid who clipped and clutched coupons to play with ( just ask my mom), and still shopped secondhand, but somewhere along the way, I lost that value for awhile.

Yes, I was the one having my nails done every week. $20 a pop, down the drain. Hair done? There went $50. Don't forget all the overpriced salon shampoos and conditioners, hair coloring, make up... oh, and the wardrobe! My bulging at the seams with sales wardrobe. Plus then I discovered the world of online shopping, oh and that evil, rotten eBay! What treasures you could find back then, at killer prices! (Think before 2000... eBay has gone rapidly downhill since then)

There was lunch out every day that I worked ($5-$7), and don't forget that afternoon soda ($2). Now granted, I wasn't exactly making minimum wage - but still, my savings account balance: $0! Credit card debt: growing!

Let me tell you the one thing every finance person tells you and is wroooong:

Don't go cold turkey on spending and cut everything out. I repeat: Don't go cold turkey. You will FAIL, and you will fail BIG TIME with a huge spending free for all unless you are that very determined 1% of folks.

Here's my advice:

Freeze the credit card in a block of ice. You still want to have it available in case you really need it, but if it's frozen in the block of ice, you have to wait for it to thaw before you can use it. Generally by the time it thaws, you've changed your mind about buying something. (Well, unless it's 110 out, and it thaws in 5 minutes. LOL)

Take yourself off all the email lists for clothing or whatever your poison is. Yep, unsubscribe from every single one of them. If you're not getting notice of that hot sale at Macy's, you're not tempted to take advantage of it.

Ditto catalogues if that's temptation. (though in this day and age, I'm sure very few of us still shop via catalogues)

Start off with one area to cut down on, and do that for a week. Then introduce something the following week, etc. For instance, start off cutting the morning coffee or afternoon soda out. The following week, work your way into bringing lunch to work 2 or 3 days a week, then make it every day. At the end, still allow yourself one day a month where you still go out to eat for lunch or have a wonderful caffeine splurge. A girl (or guy) still needs a treat!

When you go out shopping, allow yourself a certain amount of cash. Leave everything else at home. So say you're out at the mall... take $20. If you find a killer deal, and it's under $20, have yourself a treat! But more than $20... sorry honey. That's all you've got to play with. Check back to see if it's even further on discount next time (and in this economy, you'll probably get lucky!), or find something comparable at a lower price. (Believe me, I've been super guilty about certain brand names myself.) Keep the receipt, and the tags on, just in case you change your mind the next morning and you're feeling guilty. (Been there, done that!)

If you have a really bad urge to shop, try to distract yourself. Work out, clean (especially the closet so you see all that you already have!), do a craft project, or bake. (I vote bake bread, because kneading the dough really helps distract you from anything! lol)

Most importantly, try to keep track of what you've saved by not spending! It will help motivate you even more!

I don't think you can ever be 100% cured of being a spendaholic, but you can develop healthier habits towards the spending. Use coupons, sign up for freebies online so you still get a little something in your mailbox/UPS, shop secondhand for better deals on the brands you love (I get brand new clothes all the time at thrift stores!)

Getting back to the couponing has really helped me. I'm still buying a ton of stuff so I feel like I am still shopping all the time, but it's things we need at super cheap! (The key is things you need ladies, not things that sit on your shelves until they expire just because they were cheap, lol)

If you do have a breakdown, don't beat yourself up even more. It happens. :)

Review: Pond’s Wet Cleansing Towelettes

I recently had the chance to try out Pond's Wet Cleansing Towelettes. I received the Original Clean variety in the 30 count pack. They are supposed to remove 40% more dirt and grime, as well as make up, than the other brands of towelettes. Alright, so bring it on! Show me what you've got, Pond's!

I have to tell you that in the chaos that has ensued over the last few weeks in my home, that these little towelettes were a gift from heaven. I had stashed the package in my purse luckily, and because of these, I was able to clean my face up every night even as everything around me was being dumped into those dratted plastic totes! (or I'm sure I would have been stuck with bar soap and paper towels the way things were!)

The convenient packages are easily resealable, and easy to take along while traveling or to the gym. The quilted little cloths contain Triple Tea Antioxidant Complex, Vitamin E and Chamomile.

Here's a close up of one of the towelettes:

Those little diamonds you see trap dirt and other ickiness in them. I was kind of horrified at how dirty mine always were! (I guess, it was all the hidden dirt being tracked around while the furniture was moved) On the days I actually was able to wear a bit of make up (it's been rare as of late, I tell you lol), it easily removed what was on my face. The Original Clean version is the most gentle of the three varieties. (It also comes in Age Defying, and Micro Dermabrasion) I didn't break out after trying them, though I would suggest you follow up with a face cream afterwards in case your skin would dry out a little.

If you're interested in trying these out too, it's the perfect time! Pond's has a money back guarantee on their towelettes right now, as well as a $1.50 printable coupon off your purchase of any Pond's Towelettes! (They run around $4.99 in most drugstores, a little cheaper at places like Target and WalMart) There's all sorts of fun things on the site, including a diagnostic tool for your skin to recommend the right products, and beauty tips from Jenn Falik too.

Pond's Cleansing Towelettes are perfect for busy women - especially Moms with little time to themselves!, traveling, or even those like me living in insanity. ;)

DVD Review: Leapfrog: Let's Go To School

My family recently had the chance to review the new Leapfrog: Let's Go To School DVD.

As most of you know, I'm a big fan of anything that helps a child learn, and because of that, I'm a big fan of Leapfrog products.

Leapfrog: Let's Go To School is fun new learning DVD featuring Tad and Lily, the froggy twins, off to start the school year. They get a tour of their new classroom, and meet all the new things in their classroom - even the globe and clock talk to them! It focuses on teaching phonics, days of the week, counting, and animals too.

It also features five different sing along songs for your little one to sing and dance to. (Bonus whenever a DVD can help wear them out! lol)

The DVD is geared towards the 3-6 ages range, but I think the 5 and 6 year olds will get bored, fast. It's more appropriate for the 3 and 4 year olds. It also has a short running time: just 35 minutes. (Enough to get a shower, and start in on dinner, fellow Moms?)

All in all I think this is a great DVD to introduce your little one to preschool, and ease any fears they might have about going! This DVD was released on August 18th, 2009, so it's available now, with a suggested retail price of $14.98 (though Amazon had it cheaper, so check there first)

Just A Little Zizzy Contest

Head on over to Just A Little Zizzy's blog for a contest featuring a wonderful bowl from her Etsy store! The contest ends August 31st, so you have time to get your entries in!

All Home clearance is 40% the lowest marked price!

Don't forget to use your reward coupons - you should have already received them! If you have not received them yet, be sure to contact Fred Meyer!

Unfamiliar with Fred Meyer's coupon policy? They allow you stack a Fred Meyer store coupon (FM coupons as I call them) with a manufacturer's coupon. They do not price match to any other store's sale prices, and they won't take other store's sale coupons. You can however use a manufacturer's coupons on any sale or clearance items, but they usually won't allow any overage if the coupon is more than the sale price (sometimes it slips through the cracks, but don't expect it every time). Our local Washington stores do not double any coupons. They do accept the printed internet coupons if they have a barcode (like bricks coupons or from Smart Source or coupons.com if you are unfamiliar with them) so if you are having problems with a clerk not wanting to accept your coupon and you are sure it's legit coupon, please ask to have a manager come on over to verify it.

Awww Thank You! (Plus Randomness)

Holy smokes y'all, I did not expect those birthday wishes when I was sulking yesterday! LOL! I think it was more of the funk of having spent so many birthdays doing fun stuff, sometimes in totally cool locations, and knowing here I was stuck at home... than turning 32... (well, not too happy on that either... lol)

My parents held down the fort, and DH and I went across the Narrows Bridge into Tacoma. I had a free birthday lunch thanks to Red Robin, and then hit up the mall for a free ice cream at Baskin Robbins, and swung out for another free ice cream from Cold Stone Creamery.

I still have a free ice cream from Ben & Jerry's - but yes, I am totally ice creamed out even though we shared it all, and luckily, that one doesn't expire until next month. Whew! (All items linked up so if you haven't already signed up for them, what are you waiting for?)

What goodies did I score cheap at the mall? Well, a pair of Nightmare Before Christmas leg warmers from Spencer's marked down to $3.50, and at Hot Topic, pink mascara for 98 cents, and a box of heart barrettes for the munchkin whenever there's enough hair LOL for 98 cents too. I was actually hoping to hit up Goodwill Outlet, but we were running out of time, so it was that or Grocery Outlet... and food won! lol

Speaking of Grocery Outlet, is it me, or are their prices rising? I mean there are still good deals lurking here and there, and it's always entertaining to see what's on their shelves... but take for instance ice cream. It's actually cheaper at Freddy's most of the time. I used to be able to take $20 and walk out of there with several bags of stuff. I know prices are rising everywhere, but I think I notice it more at stores like Grocery Outlet because they are supposed to be bargain stores.

Anyways, I wish I could show you the monster mess known as my home at the moment. (I would, but I don't want to look back and see it, and be all traumatized again down the road!) I'm still trying to find those two review items they touched, and if you've been following me on Twitter, you know I couldn't find my pots & pans... make that STILL cannot find them! I actually bought a very sad looking pot for a quarter yesterday AM at a sale just to be able to make dinner this week. I was hoping by buying it, my pots would magically appear in the next tote/box I opened, but no such luck.

Speaking of bad luck, my debit card will not scan anywhere. Of course it has to happen when I have no cash, my cell phone is in the car with DH, and we're completely out of cat food. Murphy's Law, right?

BTW, I am still trying to dig out of emails and get my posts up on here. I didn't think everything would be this difficult to get to normal around here. I can't ignore the packed stuff, because even though it's stacked, I still fear things coming crashing down on everyone. Maybe if it was just me it wouldn't matter... but a trip to the emergency room or the emergency vet doesn't need to be in our cards right now. ;)

(I'm getting the Freddy's ad up later today!)

Review & Giveaway: Celebrate Chocolate Cocoa Covered Almonds

A few months back, you may remember my review for Celebrate Chocolate Truffles. They were DIVINE! When I got the chance to try out Celebrate Chocolate Cocoa Covered Almonds, I was in heaven! I've got to tell you, there couldn't have been more of a perfect time to have chocolate land in my mailbox than the last drama filled week!

Celebrate's products are premium chocolates and candy. I've said it before in my past review: a little goes a long way! I would eat just one or two of these yummy little almonds at a time, and it was just the perfect amount. There's no way I could have gorged on them even if I wanted to! ;) There was just a light coating of powder on them, nothing overwhelming, and it suited the almonds just perfectly. I would suggest that you drink a small sip of water just before you eat them so your throat is not dry.

I also loved that the bag they come in was resealable! Almonds (in moderation) are a healthy snack, and so is cocoa - so it's a win-win situation.

Celebrate Chocolate is letting all my readers who order from their website receive 30% off ANY purchase on their site! It can be truffles, the Chocolate Cocoa Covered Almonds, or any of their other yummy goodies! Just use code: 30NUTS

Win it! I'm so excited that I also get to give one of you your own bag of Celebrate Cocoa Covered Almonds! To enter, I need you to tell us which kind of Celebrate Chocolates you would love to try the most, AND please visit this page and fave this page on ShareThis. This is the last button located on the left navigation. You can ShareThis via bookmarking in your favorite browser or any social website available in the menu of this button. I'm not asking for proof of the bookmarking/emailing, it's on your honor. :) (Please remember, this company, like many others featured on my site, are just trying to get the word out about their products! Doing this really helps small companies in this economy!)

As always, you can receive extra entries for:
-Subscribing to my feed or following my blog
-Blogging about this giveaway with a link back
-Tweeting about this giveaway (leave the link or @psychotichouse me)

Giveaway ends August 29th at 11:59 PM PST! US only, sorry :( Good luck everyone!! :)

Cat Collars At Dollar Tree!

Check with your local Dollar Tree if you have cats: I found the same brand of kitty collars as WalMart sells for just $1 each! (Aren't they cute?) Mine didn't have dog collars, but maybe yours does?

...and of course, if you are feeling generous, pick up a few extra to donate to a local rescue group. :)

Give Your Bedroom OOMPH! For Cheap!

Your bedroom is probably the room you spend the most time in out of your entire house. The average person spends about ONE THIRD of their life in there! Wow, huh? For this reason, you want your bedroom to be a room you can relax in, and have decorate the way YOU want it (even if your eyes are closed a lot of the time you are in it!)

Really, the first thing you want to do is eliminate clutter. We all do it... things end up in the bedroom that really shouldn't be. I'm married to the king of making piles, especially with his clothes. If you have a DH like mine, consider a laundry hamper or basket (plastic baskets are on sale right now because of back to school season for around $2.99 - $3.99!) Get rid of the piles of books and magazines - just leave the one you are currently reading.

Take advantage of the space under most beds, and keep the out of season clothing under it! There are even bed risers that you can purchase (again, this is the time of year to purchase them because of college dorms!) that will raise the bed up slightly (4-6") if your bed isn't high enough to accommodate them. Make sure you've gone through whatever you have placed underneath it, and purge the things you really don't need. (I have found that under the bed is an excellent place to store extra toilet paper and paper towels!)

I've pointed this out before, but consider visiting Home Depot or WalMart, and check out the Oops paint display. Often there are full gallons of custom paint colors that simply didn't match up to what the customer requested. If you're not picky on getting a certain color, you'll score a new color for your walls for cheap. Sometimes even just changing the color of one wall as an accent wall just makes a room open up! Tip: Ask the clerk if they will remove the lid in front of you so you can verify the amount of paint in the bucket as well as that the color kind of matches the drop swatch on the lid.

Get new sheets! Scavenge your local thrift store or yard sales for brand new packages of linens - I've come across them before. Or check your favorite Target or WalMart - again, this is a great time of year for bedroom sales. If you're having a hard time finding sets in your price range, think about just buying a flat sheet and or new pillowcases to change it up. Instead of buying a whole new comforter, consider purchasing a duvet cover. Not only is it fairly easy to wash on a regular basis, but for cheap, you feel like you have a new comforter! If you have an Ikea located near you, I've always found them to have the best prices on duvets.

I personally don't care for them, but throw pillows can make your bed more inviting. I know I keep saying this, but tis the season to buy them! Wait for the clearance sales from the school sales to snag pretty pillows for under $5!

A few pillar candles from your dining or living rooms stash, arranged nicely on a nightstand or dresser drawer can change the mood of the bedroom. Try to keep many trinkets and such out though: remember less is more!

If you do it cheap, you can have your bedroom the way you want it for under $50! (If not much less!)

Thrifty Thursday - Back To School Thoughts

This week for my Thrifty Thursday post, I'm talking about saving on back to school supplies!

First, you'll want to round up all the leftover supplies from last year. I'm not talking already used crayons if your child attends a physical school (I've been the victim of that as a child, and it's traumatizing lol), but packages of other supplies that haven't been used. We're all guilty of over buying at least one supply, be it pencils, pens, or maybe even note cards. Do remember that this is the best time of year for prices on school supplies: it's generally better to overbuy notebooks at 25 cents each than have to pay $1.50 for 5 or 6 when they run out in March!

Next, sit down with all the ads from the major stores. Many stores will have incredible deals, such as folders or pencils for just 1 cent! Even CVS has some supplies that may be free after their Extra Care Bucks program. Make a list of which prices are best, but don't forget to take in account the gas, especially if the stores are across town from each other. Make a budget, and stick to it.

For back to school clothing, consider shopping at secondhand or resale shops. I often find brand new with the tags still on it clothing! Now depending on your child's size (I know slim sizes are much harder to find), the selection may be a bit smaller. But if you can purchase 2-3 items at 2/3rds of the cost of new, you're already saving a bit of cash!

And here's one that some may agree with, some may not: purchase a good QUALITY backpack. Those cheapie ones may be cute, but they often don't last the year. Get a sturdy one from a company such as L.L. Bean - the straps will hold up, and if the fabric isn't too dirty, you'll often get more than one school year from them!

A Late Posting of Winners

It's the insanity of the last week, I swear! lol I should post pictures of the wall of totes that have taken over the munchkin's room...

I love a lot of these songs. I also love Broadway shows, so I'm really interested in what they do with the music.

I don't have a favorite song off this album, but I have a story about one of them. My friend and I went to a Spring Break concert with Jefferson Starship mainly to hear "We Built This City." As soon as they sang the song, we tried to leave, but traffic wasn't moving. Maybe someone parked in the road or something. So, we partied in the car for, like, five hours until we could get off Pensacola Beach. It was crazy.

Free Can of Alpo Dog Food

Enter the Alpo Real Dogs Tell it Like It Is Contest and get a coupon for a free can of Alpo canned dog food. Alpo cans are big cans so depending on the size of your dog, you should be able to get more than one meal from it.

The prize is your dog featured in the Real Dogs Eat Meat Handbook, and a year's supply of Alpo!

I haven't done this one yet as I am out of ink (oh, the horrors!) but I believe it is a printable coupon. If someone finds out it isn't, please let me know and I'll edit it in.

(and if you don't have a dog, consider donating the can to one of many rescues or shelters in need!)
