Spotlight on Kroger Pet Insurance & Giveaway!

The folks over at the Kroger Company - Fred Meyer's parent company - recently contacted me about their new $9.95 a month per pet accidents only pet insurance.

(because like I can resist an excuse to show my pets off! Look at that smile! lol)

If you've been following my blog at all over the last six months, you probably have guessed that we've spent a small fortune in emergency pet bills. Between our desperate attempts to save Pudgy, to Captain the Psychotic Corgi's disaster last month, yeah... insurance would have been a really good thing. We've been talking about going ahead and doing it for him, because he scares me to death with some of his leaps off the back of the couch - I'm terrified he's going to break a leg one of these days. At one point I looked into it through one company, and the cost per month for him was $67 for a basic, $92 for full coverage, just for him! Yeah, um, a savings account would do just fine at that cost. (ouch!)

Now the insurance through Kroger Personal Finance (Fred Meyer's parent company) starts at just $9.95 like I mentioned above, and covers "accidents" only - so if you have a dog that seems to think he's Evil Knievel like mine does, this might be want you want. At that cost, it seems like a good deal to me. If you have a pet that's more sedentary, or getting a little older, there are several other plans available that run up to $39.95 a month - way less than I was quoted by another company. (and certainly cheaper than the emergency vet bills our family has run up) Some of these other plans cover everything from regular check ups and vaccinations, as well as illnesses like our Pudgy Princess suffered from. Plus, they have multi-pet household deals for folks like us with a mini petting zoo ;) I appreciate that!

There are some great vets out there that will work with you for a payment plan if an emergency happens (I suggest discussing the possibility BEFORE anything ever happens to your pet, so you are prepared when the brain fog of panic kicks in during that situation), and of course, if you have a credit card, you can always use that in an emergency. However, a lot of emergency 24 hour clinics will NOT work with you - many expect payment up front before they will even take a look at your pet, if you didn't know this yet, I hope I can help you learn a little after all this trauma we've been through. Here's a few things you may not have thought of that I've learned in case of pet emergencies:

*Have your main vet phone number in your cell phone. Also have the phone number of the closest vet to you in case you can't make it to your vet soon enough.

*Do you know what hours your vet clinic is open to daily? Many clinics have magnetic business cards at their office with the hours and an after-hours emergency clinic number. Stop by and pick one up on your next trip nearby - you don't have to have an appointment to pick that up. ;)

*Find out if your vet does any form of trauma visits, or if you have to take your pet to a different clinic in case of emergency. Again, this is something you can ask right over the phone - it only takes a moment to be prepared! If you have to take your pet to a 24 hospital, do you know where the nearest one is located? (Kitsap County folks, ours is located over in Poulsbo!) Do you know how to get there? If your pet is heavily bleeding, you don't have time to mapquest the location - keep the directions printed out in the glove compartment of your car or in your purse.

*Keep a folder with all your pet's medical paperwork in where you can grab it quickly in case of emergency. If you have more than one pet, have seperate folder for each, so you're not sorting through a pile of papers looking for what is needed. If you have to go to a different clinic, it may be hours before they can see a faxed copy of your vet records. You'll save time if you have the information with you. (If your pet travels in a carrier in the car, consider a waterproof folder attached to the carrier, taped down on top for instance.)

The bright side of this pet insurance that Kroger offers, is that it works with ANY vet clinic, as you are the one submitting the claim. You're not forced to go to a clinic you don't like or is out of your way. The downside is, you're arranging for payment up front, then being reimbursed, so keep this in mind if your checking account is low a lot. (Like I said, some vets will work with you, just ask ahead and mention you have this insurance if you get it) You can purchase this pet insurance online, or check out the service desk at your favorite store - they will have a brochure about it available, and can help you out.

Win it! One lucky reader is going to win a $25 gift card to the Kroger family of stores to spoil their pets for the holidays, which includes Fred Meyer out here in WA, as well as QFC, Dillions, and other Kroger company stores. To enter, I'd like to know about the pets in your life. (easy peasy as always) Have you ever thought about pet insurance for them before? Do you buy them gifts for the holidays? Do you pamper them more than you do yourself? Do they have a favorite treat?

As always, you can receive extra entries for:

-Subscribing to my feed or following my blog
-Blogging about this giveaway with a link back
-Tweeting about this giveaway (leave the link or @psychotichouse me)

That's four (4) possible entries! Giveaway ends December 12th at 11:59 PM PST (note the short run!), and please leave your email address in your entry or have it available in your profile. US only, sorry :( Good luck everyone!!

For sharing my thoughts, Kroger Personal Finance provided me with a $25 gift card for the pets in my life, as well as a gift card to give away to one of my readers.

Review: Lollycadoodle

There was a study recently released that found lead in a quarter of dog products. How is it we allow our pets to play with unsafe toys, but we're more careful with our kids? As anyone with both small children and pets know, on more than one occasion, your child will grab a dog toy off the floor - besides the obvious germ factor, now we have to worry about lead exposure too?

I try to be careful with the toxins my pets are exposed to, but it's so hard when so many products have toxins in them. At home, my dogs do not wear their collars (they are microchipped), their dishes are ceramic, and I avoid buying plastic toys that aren't BPA free. (Course, they love toys with squeakers, and it's hard to know how safe that part is!) While the cats wear collars, their dishes are also ceramic, and I try to stick to toys that are made of material as well.

That's why I was so excited to find Lollycadoodle cat and dog toys! Each one is made from 100% wool through a process called "felting" - apparently, felting is "agitating hand-dyed New Zealand wool with soap and water until the desired shape is formed". Neat, huh? They are all handmade by trained Artisans in Nepal, and are natural, and biodegradable - plus, you can even wash them in the top rack of your dishwasher!

We received the snake to review. The Muffin Man got first dibs since the cats never get to review anything. (Poor kitties, the corgis get all the fun! lol) He's a BIG cat, so you can see how big the snake is with him:

...and then the mayhem started when the corgis saw him with it:

And the clear victor of the battle with his prize:

I will say the eyeballs did not survive the battle. Our snake is hanging in there fine, he's just blind. ;) They don't usually destroy their toys, but then again, I've never seen a tug of war battle with them before. It's still perfectly safe to play with now that the eyeballs are gone (They didn't swallow them, I jumped in and grabbed it)

Lollycadoodle has tons of other adorable designs, even some perfect for the holidays such as little peppermints and snowmen. I think their snails and mushrooms are fun for cats! So if you're on the hunt for an environmentally friendly gift for the furry one in your life, ask your favorite pet boutique to carry Lollycadoodle wool toys!

Ufadili, who I hosted a giveaway for awhile back, has a sale going on where you can save 20% off your order, and there is free shipping! Use promo code "20OFF" at checkout to receive this discount.

LTDchix, who I've done several reviews and giveaways in the past for too, has a great sale going on as well, no code needed. Almost all of their shirts are now $12 and under! If you need a fun gift for another Mom, go check out their shirts!

And Mabel's Labels, who I reviewed during Back to School season, has a great sale going on for Cyber Monday. (Their labels rock!) One of my recipes has been featured on FunnySpoon! (I'm cheating, you'll have to go look to find out which one, LOL) There's some great recipes featured throughout the site if you're in search of some new ones!

Pssst... I've got a review coming up from a site called Golden Moon Tea - if you like Oolong Tea, you might want to check them out if you can't wait. ;) (I'll have a discount code in my review!)

This Is Getting Absolutely Ridiculous

I about had a heart attack when I looked at the total on my electric bill. Now remember, our furnace doesn't work so our main source of heat is wood. I have a small radiator heated that I use in the bedroom since otherwise it turns into a freezer, and that hasn't been any higher than last month. I can account for some of the extra use, after all I did use the oven a lot and had a few extra loads of laundry. So how did we jump $20 on top of that?

Oh right, they raised the electric rates AGAIN. So Puget Sound Energy can waste what they charge us by taking all those people driving up and down the road to fix one little line, remember that one last month?

You know if Washington State had more sunlight, I'd totally turn this place into solar and say BYE BYE to the electricity companies. No wonder so many folks can't pay their bills!

Recession, smession. The problem isn't the economy itself: it's the constant WASTE that's done in this country, from everything to bureaucracies, to throwing away so much food because so many people don't know how to shop properly. There was an article on Yahoo about apple orchards in New York just letting their fruit rot on the trees - this with so many people who can't even afford fresh fruit. Fine, I get that it costs the farmers money to pick it - well then have people sign a waiver, and let them in to pick it for free - it's a win-win situation then.

*pounds head against wall* That's it. We need SAHM's who know how to manage on one income to take over businesses and other things in this country and run it like she does her household. I'm rolling up my sleeves, and going in with a kid on my hip and two corgis at my feet. Storm for Governor*! Will you vote for me? ;)

*I'm a member of the Independent Moms Who Know How To Shop party. snicker, snicker, snort, snort.

Right now, many local Fred Meyer stores are giving a 10% discount on items such as apparel, etc on Tuesdays if you were born in 1955 or before. Check with your store to see if they are participating, and for the full list of items you can get the discount on.

You should begin receiving your Fred Meyer rewards in the next week or so if you haven't already - contact Freddy's if it doesn't appear by next week!

Unfamiliar with Fred Meyer's coupon policy? They allow you stack a Fred Meyer store coupon (FM coupons as I call them) with a manufacturer's coupon. They do not price match to any other store's sale prices, and they won't take other store's sale coupons. You can however use a manufacturer's coupons on any sale or clearance items, but they usually won't allow any overage if the coupon is more than the sale price (sometimes it slips through the cracks, but don't expect it every time). Our local Washington stores do not double any coupons. They do accept the printed internet coupons if they have a barcode (like bricks coupons or from Smart Source or coupons.com if you are unfamiliar with them) so if you are having problems with a clerk not wanting to accept your coupon and you are sure it's legit coupon, please ask to have a manager come on over to verify it.

TV Review: Word Girl Holiday Episodes

A few weeks back, you'll remember my family was able to review the Word Girl Halloween special.

Now we were able to review one of the new holiday Word Girl episodes coming up! WORD UP!

There will be three new episodes premiering over this holiday season - the first aired November 23rd, featuring an episode called "Who Is Mrs. Question?", where kids learned the words Inquire and Hilarious.

We were able to review a copy of the shows that will be airing December 10th. They feature the segment "Oh, Holiday Cheese", where the evil Dr Two Brains tries to steal every one's cheese for his own holiday party. Singing carols about cheese? Does that sound like my cheese obsessed family or what? ;) (How we love cheeeese!) DH and I even learned a new word of our own in this episode - Curmudgeon.

As a Mom, I appreciate any show that helps with learning something new, and Word Girl definitely delivers while still being fun.

The next two holiday themed Word Girl shows will be airing December 10th (the one I reviewed up there!), and December 28th - be sure to check your local PBS station listings for what time they come on in your area if you have Word Girl fans at home too.

Featured Etsy - Blooming Couture

Each day this week, I'm featuring a different Etsy store as part of my Holiday Gift Idea Guide! While shopping for handmade isn't always the cheapest gift, you'll end up with a unique gift and help support someone like you, instead of a big business. Please consider purchasing handmade gifts this holiday season!

Today's stop on the tour is a store called Blooming Couture. Blooming Couture makes beautiful floral arrangements using silk flowers. Right now, her store is filled of lots of holiday decorations perfect for your home and to have on display at parties!

Look at this festive Santa Christmas Wreath, perfect to greet visitors on your front door:

This Blooming Sleigh would be a lovely decoration in a window or a table near your Christmas tree:

Or this Christmas Holiday Centerpiece on your formal dining table during a dinner party?

Food Storage Friday - Leftovers Stock Up Edition

With rising prices, bad weather, unstable job environments, one of the best things we as women (or men) in charge of our homes can do, is work on our food storage to ensure our family will continue to eat well no matter what the circumstance is. It doesn't take a lot to organize your pantry and make a little room for extras, and with the help of coupons and sales, can be done very cheaply. Every Friday, I'd like to encourage you to join in with me to do one or two little things to add to or work with your food storage.

With the craziness of the holiday weekend, I know a lot of us don't have much time to do a lot of pantry planning and fixing. So this week I'm going to make a simple suggestion: take advantage of the last days of these store sales this week, and buy an extra one or two of every shelf stable item, such as canned or jarred gravy, stuffing, mashed potatoes, etc. All of these are items that go very well with other meat related dishes, and keep for at least 6 months. (so if you're like me and crave stuffing in April, you've already got it on hand!)

If you have extra time this coming week, the first of the month is here. I find that the first is a great day to check up on my pantry and make sure nothing is past the expiration date, and if there are things near the date, I can plan those into my menu plan soon. I dust off my cans, and make sure there are no cans that are leaking, or packages that look funky. Don't forget to clean out your fridge too while you are it!

Blog Tour, Review, & Giveaway: Nancy's Appetizers

Mom Central recently asked me if I wanted to be a part of the Nancy's Appetizers Blog Tour... so here I am. With the holiday season right about to start, I thought it was perfect timing. Not all of us make everything for the meal from scratch!

I've actually been rather fond of Nancy's products throughout the year. I think they make some lovely little frozen quiches. Sure, you can get nice ones usually through your store's prepared deli, but if you live on your own like I did before I was married, it's a little hard to eat that entire quiche before it spoils. Nancy's little ones were just the right size.

I received a coupon to try out any appetizer product for free, so I choose the Mushroom Turnovers. They were easy to make in my oven, just 10 minutes and they were done. DH gobbled them up like they were going out of style, so I guess they were really good. ;) I was kind of wishing there was more than just 12 to a box as quick as they went!

Did you know that the right amount of appetizers per person at your home or party is about 8-10 pieces for every hour they are there? And placing your frozen appetizers on your serving tray before they thaw out not only makes it easier to have the tray looking pretty and appetizers not falling apart on you, but it also makes for a quick grab out of the fridge - you save a few moments as your guests arrive. (It also helps keep the appetizers cool since the tray is conducting cold from the fridge too!)

For those looking for a vegetarian option from Nancy's, the Four Cheese and Broccoli Cheddar Petite Quiche is 100% vegetarian.

Win it! I'm sharing my coupons, so one lucky reader will win a coupon to try out their appetizer of choice from Nancy's. To enter, visit Nancy's and tell me which appetizer you'll try! (Easy peasy!) Will you have them during a family game night like us? Maybe use them during your holiday dinner? or are you having a holiday party you'll be serving them up at? (Let me live vicariously through you! LOL)

As always, you can receive extra entries for:

-Subscribing to my feed or following my blog
-Blogging about this giveaway with a link back
-Tweeting about this giveaway (leave the link or @psychotichouse me)

That's four (4) possible entries! Giveaway ends December 5th at 11:59 PM PST (note the short run!), and please leave your email address in your entry or have it available in your profile. US only, sorry :( Good luck everyone!!

"I wrote this review while participating in a blog tour campaign by Mom Central on behalf of Nancy’s Appetizers and received 2 coupons to facilitate my review (one of which is being given away) and a $20 thank-you gift certificate."

Friday's Featured Etsy: Plush Goodness

Thanksgiving Catch Up

So is the insanity over in your home? Are you stuffed on all the good food?

And so I can live vicariously through y'all, did you score an incredible deal early this morning during all the Black Friday sales? We almost hit up WalMart after the main rush, but I rolled over and told DH forget it. I was not leaving my warm bed! ;)

If you have a ton of turkey leftovers and need something to do with them, let me remind you of some of the great recipes I've done earlier this month:

Slow Cooker Mexican Turkey

BBQ Turkey Cornbread Pizza

Sweet N' Sour Turkey And Rice

Turkey Tertazzini

I Am Thankful...

I know tomorrow is going to be dead in blogland, so I'm posting it today. I stole this idea from Lin over at Duck and Wheel With String - not that I'll even get close to 100 because I am LAZY. I heart her well written, beautiful blog, and her 47 pounds of stripey goodness too. ;) (If you have no idea what I am talking about, well, you'll just have to visit her blog then, won't you?) And yes, I sort of stole #1 from her.

1. Having my own washer and dryer, even if half the time one part or the other doesn't work. I no longer have to worry about germs from a public washer & dryer, or saying Hail Marys trying to come up with enough quarters so DH can have clean work clothes.

2. Having a roof, albeit leaky, roof over our heads. I have absolutely no desire to live in the car again if I can help it.

3. Mi familia. I love my little family!

4. Having a car - hey, it's mine, even if I don't drive it! - because nothing beats not having to walk to the store in torential downpours like we have out here in WA.

5. Sloppy furry kisses and wiggly corgi butts - after losing our beloved Pudgy Princess, I thought it might be a long time before we got that again. Now I'm blessed to get it from two of them!

6. The internet! Thanks to the internet, I've learned about so many great deals over the years. And these days, it enables me to be a better steward of our money.

7. and with the internet, comes this blog and all of YOU who read my blog! I'm thankful that I have this little corner of the internet to whine, share deals, and have a little bit of sorely needed adult conversation!

8. Dark Chocolate. Enough said, right ladies? ;)

9. Electricity. Don't laugh, but I'm super thankful to not be cooking dinner via candlelight. ;)

10. Libraries. How I love thee, my beautiful libraries filled with books galore and DVDs to keep my DH happy. Besides thrift shopping, you are my favorite place to waste the day away in!

11. Coupons! Maybe that goes along a bit with #6? Nah! I am thankful that companies give us coupons so I can shave our grocery bill in half.

12. Toilet Paper. Because leaves and the Sears catalog are not my idea of fun in the bathroom. ;)

13. A decently stocked pantry. I am thankful I have heeded what my heart was telling me and stocked up on several weeks of extra food, so I don't have to worry if something ever happens that our bank account is in the negative.

May each and everyone of my American friends have a Blessed Thanksgiving spent with those you love most (even if it's over the phone, or gee, even your favorite football team on the TV! LOL), and to all my internet friends around the world - may you have a safe, blessed day filled with joy and love!

1 out of 3 isn't bad, right? LOL

Review & Giveaway: Softlips Lip Balm

Lip glosses are like candy to me. Well, at least I stash them like I do my chocolate - here, there and everywhere. I can't stand lipstick - frankly, I end up looking like a bloated dead body when I do wear it (LOL!), so maybe it's a good thing! - but lip glosses, I adore! I love having a variety of different "flavors" that make my lips soft.

I received received some of the Softlips Lip Balm with SPF 20 in their new Special Edition Winter Flavors, and some of the Softlips PURE lip balms. It was like Christmas opening this package, let me tell you!

The Softlips Limited Edition winter Flavors Lip Balm come in Winter Mint, Sugar Cookie, Sugar & Spice, and Sugar Plum Berry. These came two to a "card" with every day flavors such as Cherry and Vanilla and retail for $3.99. They also contain an SPF of 20. While getting some sun is great for Vitamin D consumption, the last thing you want to do is have your lips burnt, either from the sun, or even the wind. Ouch! I think we all are used to using SPF on our bodies, but we forget our head, top of our ears, and our lips.

The Softlips PURE Lip Balm is actually 100% natural and certified by the USDA to be organic. It contains no animal by-products, and is not tested on animals. Available on one per card (retail $2.99), you can choose from pomegranate, honeydew, peppermint, acai berry, papaya, and chai tea "flavors". They are free of parabens, pesticides, and harsh chemicals.

I always am happy to see a product not tested on animals - in fact, I think it should be law that products are never tested on animals, so I definitely give PURE two thumbs up at that. I'd love to see it listed as completely vegan, however - that would rock! Both the PURE and the Limited Edition Winter Flavors went on easily, and didn't feel stiff like some of the brands can. I like this longer, thinner tube - it's a little sexier coming out of your pocket ;) plus it just makes it a little more make-up like and less boring medicinal lip balm. You don't have the feeling of being embarrassed if you pull it out of your purse on a night out on the town, I guess is what I am trying to say. ;)

As far as "flavors" go, my favorite was the Sugar Cookie from the Limited Edition sets.

If you are looking for a practical, yet fun stocking stuffer or little gift exchange idea, these Softlips are just perfect! They are inexpensive and come in a variety of "flavors" so there's one for just about everyone. They don't leave a color on your lips, so even young girls can have their own "make-up".

By the way, you can follow Softlips on Facebook for information and goodies!

Win it! One lucky reader will win a set of the new Limited Edition Winter Flavors from Softlips! To enter, tell me your favorite lip gloss "flavor". (Easy peasy!) Are you an addict like me? ;)

As always, you can receive extra entries for:

-Subscribing to my feed or following my blog
-Blogging about this giveaway with a link back
-Tweeting about this giveaway (leave the link or @psychotichouse me)

That's four (4) possible entries! Giveaway ends November 28th at 11:59 PM PST (note the short run!), and please leave your email address in your entry or have it available in your profile. US only, sorry :( Good luck everyone!!

Del's Feed & Farm Supply Coupon

Now I do realize a lot of you don't exactly live on a farm, and think I am nuts for posting this offer: but they also have a LOT of pet food that they carry such as Nutro and Chicken Soup for the Cat/Dog Lover's Soul, as well as supplies, so if you have any critters at all, it's definitely worth your time. They also carry things for the garden, and outdoor work wear and boots in their store, along the usual horse and other farm feeds. I think this may be a NW store only, you'll have to check to see if there's one near you.

Sign up for Del's Feed & Farm Supply's email list on the bottom right hand corner of the page, and they'll give you a $5 off your next purchase of $25 or more in their store. It's in PDF form, and valid through December 31st, 2009. It's not valid on clearance.

They also have a BOGOF coupon for Science Diet Dog Treats up that expires November 30th, 2009. I don't think you can stack it with the coupon above, though you could try.

If you have a wood stove or fireplace, Del's carry the presto style logs that can burn for up to 12 hours (not a HOT heat, but warm) at $1.05 each - use this coupon to stock up on wood for emergency situations too!

We buy our rabbit "chow" from them and have always been quite pleased with it. (Granted, if you only have one bunny, that 50 lbs is going to last a year or more! LOL)

Book Review: Toxic Friends The Antidote for Women Stuck in Complicated Friendships by Susan Shapiro Barash

I recently received a copy of the book Toxic Friends: The Antidote for Women Stuck in Complicated Friendships by Susan Shapiro Barash to review.

I don't know about you, but over the years I had accumulated a handful of friends that could definitely be classified as toxic. One in particular I had been friends with since elementary school (we joked we had survived being the non-cookie cutter kids there), and things were fine when we were kids... but as we got older, the insanity grew. I've posted about my biker bar flashback before, but that doesn't even begin to scratch the surface. Take our border incident: girlfriend smuggled a whole bunch of Cuban cigars in the car across the border, a definite no-no back then. I have customs issues (which she knew) so of course we were going to be stopped for a random search. I spent 15 minutes saying Hail Marys in my mind discussing OSU football and NHL hockey with the customs agents while we (what am I saying we? HER!) narrowly escaped being busted when they were searching our car. To this day, I have NO clue how they missed that big box - the dimwit actually left them in the box they came in because "it was a great souvenir".

*pound head, pound head* Did I cut her off from my life after that? Nope. I seriously could have used a copy of Toxic Friends back then. Maybe I would have seen things clearer, and save myself a few more headaches.

Toxic Friends: The Antidote for Women Stuck in Complicated Friendships is a book that describes ten types of friends, then goes on to show you how you got stuck with that kind of friend in the first place - and how to get rid of the ones who are toxic from the ones who are "true" friends.

Now I'm not going to say reading this is going to cure all your lousy friendships - far from it, because you still have to have the guts or desire to walk away from the friendship - but it's an entertaining read, and a look into female friendships. (maybe that's just all the cultural anthropology classes I took, lol) It's interesting to see the differences between being The DoorMat to the User (and I'm sure we ALL have a least someone in our life who is that person - chances are, they're in your family too! LOL) to The Frenemy, and importantly, The True Friend. (I vote that The True Friend is the friend that comes and helps you bury the body.... LOL I'm kidding, I'm kidding) The book actually starts off with a little quiz you can take, kind of like a popular fashion magazine - in fact, I'd say this book is geared to the 20-30 crowd, maybe a little older too, but more for them.

If you're curious, I finally cut that friend up there out of my life right after I was married and she made yet another not-so nice comment about my husband. I hit my breaking point. Do I miss her? Honestly - no. I can't even imagine her in my life anymore. Whether that's a product of just the complete 180 it seems like my life has taken from when I was 18, for instance, I'm not really sure. But I definitely am sure that things are lot less drama filled without her around! ;)

Toxic Friends: The Antidote for Women Stuck in Complicated Friendships retails for $24.99, and can be purchased at your local bookstore. Amazon has it on sale right now for $16.49.

Disclaimer: I received a copy of the above book for free to review, but the opinions expressed are my own.

Thrift Store Tuesday - Black Friday Sales

Welcome to another week of resale and thrift store shopping!

My question this week...

A lot of thrifts and resales will be having sales on Black Friday - will you be trying to score any deals at them?

I know Value Village has everything 50% off, and I think our Goodwill is doing something as well, but I don't think I will attempt the craziness. I can live without the rude people in the kitchen goodies aisle. ;) I may change my mind though - we'll see.

I didn't get to go thrifting this past week, so hopefully I can live vicariously though you ladies - did you find any wonderful deals lately?

It's Time For Random Tuesday Thoughts!

randomtuesday

Let's play a game: Sunday I chopped off a good 8" off my hair. Now it's not like it's a bob, but the 8" is still pretty substantial. My DH still hasn't noticed.... let's see how long it takes for him to. In the interest of not cheating, I'm leaving it down as much as possible. Something tells me next RTT, I'll be starting it off saying he's still not noticed. ;) (and before someone suggests it, no I cannot donate my hair to Locks of Love, the reason I cut it was because it was too fried to do anything else with it. I've been dying my hair since I was 12, do the math of how many dye jobs it's seen since then)

As we were leaving the other day, we heard this huge POP! noise. I thought for sure DH blew a tire and went into panic mode. One of the neighbor kids left their toy in our driveway, and we ran over it. Not my problem... I'm sorry, but I wasn't allowed to leave my toys lying all over the yard (or neighbors yards for that matter!), and neither will my daughter. If you want your home to look like a pigsty, not to mention have ruined toys, then that's fine... but not ours. Put. Them. A.WAY! *said in her best Jeff Dunham and Peanut voice...*

I heart Jeff Dunham. Especially Achmed, the dead terrorist.

C'mon, doesn't that make you giggle? (Not for kids, a bit of bad language and off beat humor!!!!)

I kill you!

I don't know what is up with the library system, but it's showing online that I haven't returned the things I returned last week, and it's saying I'm racking up fees. Um, no. I walked those puppies into the library myself into their little chute, I know they were returned. I notice how they have the items I borrowed that day perfectly in their system though, grrrr!

Those of you suffering from a lack of rain, I really wish we could send some of ours your way.

You've got Jingle Bombs stuck in your head now, don't you? Bwhaaa!

Gaming Review: Mortimer Beckett and the Secrets of Spooky Manor (Wii)

On my family's quest to grow our Nintendo Wii family friendly game collection, we purchased Mortimer Beckett and the Secrets of Spooky Manor.

Mortimer Beckett and the Secrets of Spooky Manor is a search and find game. It allows for up to four players to play the game at once. While you do have to read a bit of text on the screen, for the most point, it's very simple - just point and click. Even smaller children can easily figure that out, even if older kids or Mom and Dad have to read the text to them while the whole family is playing. As the story progresses, you may have to shake your remote a little to ditch ghosts (more on that in a bit), but again, the game is simple, and there is no violence - the scariest part is the very cartoonish ghosts.

In Mortimer Beckett and the Secrets of Spooky Manor you are Mortimer Beckett, going through room by room of your eccentric uncle's house (that really looks like it needs to be on an episode of Hoarders, I kid you not!). You need to find pieces of the handy dandy Ghost Machine your uncle has created, and turn it on to rid the mansion of these pesky ghosts and free your uncle from their grasp. Sounds easy, right? Except to find the pieces, you are looking at some pieces that are split into teeny tiny pieces - for instance, a top hat might be throughout the room into 4 different pieces! Once you've found all the missing pieces in room and put them back where they belong - sometimes in other rooms - you can then solve the puzzle as how to get to the next level (or floor) There is also a secret code that you are finding all the letters to as you solve rooms.

The first few areas are easy, but as you go on, it definitely gets more difficult. This isn't a game you can solve in the first hour, (but rather over the entire evening) and it could easily be played over and over again if you play as a family - because by the time you get to the last room, you're going to forget where the items on the first floor were - especially if there are several of you clicking on items. You'll be paying attention to what you're finding, not what they are finding. Here's the thing: the bigger your TV screen is, the easier it is to find the pieces than on say a 26-27" screen. And also, the better quality screen you have, the clearer the picture is. If you have an older TV, you may want to stay away from this game because of it, otherwise you'll find yourself face first in front of the TV squinting, or clicking randomly saying Hail Marys.

Mortimer Beckett and the Secrets of Spooky Manor is rated E, for everyone, and has some silly Halloween style music throughout the game, but you can adjust the sound. It's not the most exciting game in the world, but it's fun to play as a family, and you can definitely waste away an evening playing it. As a value game - under $15, it's fun, but I wouldn't spend more than that. Amazon has it listed for $29.54, but we picked up our copy for half that at Target, FYI.

Disclaimer: I purchased this game with my own money, and was not compensated in any way for this review. It's my opinion only.

Book Review: Bear Portraits By Jill Greenberg

I recently received a copy of the book Bear Portraits by Jill Greenberg to review.

Bear Portraits is a hardcover book full of stunning portraits of yep - different bears. I have to tell you the pictures are incredibly gorgeous! This is one where I cannot gush enough. There are pictures of cute and cuddly bear cubs to full grown grizzly bears, some in cute poses, some in reflective thoughts poses, even a few that the bear looks like it might eat you for dinner. There is some quotes throughout the book, but it's mostly just the pictures.

If you have someone who is decorating their home in the rustic cabin look, this book is perfect for them to have out on their shelf or coffee table. It's also great for kids to flip through (though, the scary ones might be too much for littles) Some of the photos almost look like drawings, they are just that beautiful. (alright, and maybe edited a bit) On a few pictures, I almost expected to see a little bit of the bear's dinner caught in the teeth in their mouth! This book definitely would make a nice holiday present.

Here's hoping Ms. Greenberg does portraits of wildcats next!

Bear Portraits by Jill Greenberg retails for $26.99, but Amazon currently has it on sale for $14.57.

Grrrrr...

The reason why I had no posts yesterday is because I seem to have picked up germ du jour. I spent as much time as I could resting in hopes I'm nipping whatever it is in the bed. I do not want everyone else sick! *cringe*

To make my day even more better, as I was trying to fix a shelf that hadn't been put back together yet, not only did I get my thumb with wire cutters trying to get a stripped screw out, but that rotten little kitten got behind the washer and dryer when my ADD kicked in doing laundry and I forgot to put stuff in the dryer. (How, I don't know, because they had been shoved so close to the wall!)

The dryer was on for 10 minutes before it clicked in that there really wasn't enough space and maybe she was UNDER the dryer. I turned off the dryer, went back to the shelf, and gave up at that point (on the shelf). I declared it nap time.

Kitten is still alive and in one piece, for now anyways. (Did she learn her lesson? Probably not! LOL I know now why I like to rescue adult critters and usually stray away from kittens or puppies - they're a handful!) My dryer is apparently a different story - now it's making a different noise and I think I hear a sad bugle in the background. I have NO idea what we are going to do, either. It's so old that it's not really worth paying someone to fix it - it's almost as old as we are!

Of course, it has to be that what was in the washer and dryer was my covers for the bed. We slept pillowcase-less because with my hand I was NOT moving totes around to figure out which one had my extra sheets in, and DH was too lazy tired to bother when he came home... or when he got up, either *throws hands up in the air* I'd pull the ignore cleaning or fixing anything and see if he does it, but I always give in before him.

Is 2009 over yet? Can I just hibernate in the bed until it is?

Fred Meyer Deals 11/22 - 11/ 28 2009

If the list below looks a little small, it's because the ad is pushing a lot of alcohol with the upcoming holiday. I personally do not like to blog them, as I don't feel they are really deals to begin with, and here in Washington there really aren't coupon match ups since we don't have wine tag coupons. Check your ad for the list of wines they are highlighting.

The best deals to me this week are the eggs at 99 cents and the 8" pumpkin at just $2.99. You still have this week to get a free turkey if you spend $150 in one transaction. Otherwise, it's $0.49 a pound if you spend $100, or $0.59 a pound if you spend $50. There's a limit of 1, and you'll need the in ad coupon to get the savings.
