End Of The Year Fun & Strange Search Round Up
I really wanted to end the year on a fun note, so I figured since it's been awhile since I've done a silly search keyword post, let's do an end of the year one! Without further adieu, here's some rather interesting ways folks found my blog!
The most popular search engine keywords? Lean Cuisine Coupons and about 5 million variations throughout the year, followed by Confessions of a Psychotic Housewife and a whole host of mis-spelled variations, and housewife blog. (At least those are normal search terms...)
Then there was:
psychotic housewife yep, that's me!
gothic housewife definitely me
confessions of a psychotic mom sorry, when I started this blog, I wasn't a mommy yet!
housewife recipe ummm... you can make a housewife in a big pot? Was this the follow up movie to Hocus Pocus? lol
I can't forget the priceless term snorting detergent - you people frighten me!
ah hem Do I want to know?
am I psychotic? a whole bunch on this one... um... I'm not a doctor so I can't diagnose you?
best housewife blog I'd like to think that's my blog ;)
can a spendaholic be cured? There are breakdowns, but you can definitely curb your breakdowns!
donate your turkey fat I did blog about that one, didn't I? LOL
feeling old at 32 I feel your pain, I do.
And here's a couple one hit wonders:
i bought 52 weeks of naughty nights well, I didn't. lol
I think my feet are getting bigger It happens, you're not imagining things.
19 year old housewife definitely NOT me!
albertsons targeting housewifes if they are, they aren't hitting up my blog! (Pssst Albies? You can come knocking on my bloggy door!)
all yahoo questions for my best friends girlfriend is psychotic? Hmmm... I wonder if that's my DH's best friend asking that one. LOL
free housewife sampler methinks you definitely DID NOT find what you were looking for. Sorry bud!
matt is at the store looking for snacks to buy.he buys five candy bars that are two for $1,four bags of chips that are $2.50 each,a 6 pack of pepsi for $2.50, and a pizza for $7.at the register he hands the clerk a 25% off coupon.what does his total bill? Someone's totally cheating on their homework. Parents, don't you know what your kids are doing online? (and don't ask me, because my math skills are LOUSY lol)
psychosis and protein shakes Now that I think about it, I did drink a bunch of those in the 90s... maybe that's the cause! lol
psychotic refuse to cook You know, I've contemplated pulling that one, but I'd be the one to starve to death. There's only so much fast food my body can handle - I'd give up long before my DH would.
rules of being a good mexican housewife The only rule: Never come between a man and his Mami. (LOL) Feed them well, and they will be happy, but come to terms that your cooking will never be as good as his mother's (or in DH's case, his Tia Chine)
rantings of a psychotic housewife Yeah, I'm pretty good at ranting.
rich housewife blog I wish, I wish.
schedule of a housewife who sleeps at 1 am Let me tell you, it's nuts. There's a reason my slow cooker is my best friend.
and my personal favorite:
psycotic cross-dressing chicken ROTFLMAO!!!!!

Thrifty Thursday - Hot Water Useage
This week for my Thrifty Thursday post, I'm talking about keeping your electric bill down, by minimizing your hot water usage.
I don't know about you, but my hot water heater and it's usage accounts for a large chunk of my electric bill. For the longest time I couldn't figure out why, because it's actually one of the newest things in my house (we had to replace a chunk of it shortly after we bought this place) If you're struggling to keep your electric bill in check too, here's a few tips:
The easiest: set your thermometer a little lower. Most hot water heaters can be set at 120 or below, and you'll still have HOT water. Why are you paying for hot water that you're adding cold water too because it's too hot to use if it's any higher than that? (crickets chirping) Yeah, I had no idea that you could set it at 120, either. (some water heaters may only let you choose from "hot" and "warm" - warm is just fine!)
Almost just as easy: If you have easy access to your water heater, or your fuse box, consider turning it off before bed time and turning it back on first thing in the morning?
Easy, but costly: Replace your water heater with a new, tankless energy efficient model. It might take awhile to see the savings when add in the cost of the water heater, but it will help. If you can't do this, learn how to maintain your water heater - did you know, sediment builds up in the bottom, cutting the effectiveness of your water heater? If you clean this out regularly, it will help your bill (and give you water in a total emergency - did you know you can drain it out for clean water to flush toilets and drink? I had no idea either on this one!)
You can also:
Insulate your water pipes from the water heater until it goes into the wall. (or as close to it as you can get)
Purchase a "water heater blanket" to help insulate it. (Hit up your favorite home improvement store to snag one, don't just use any old blanket!)
Wash items in warm or cold water unless you have germ/dust mite issues going on.
Use a low flow shower head or an adjustable one (there are models that will adjust the water to a trickle while you are soaping up or shaving!).
Shave one minute off every shower taken in your home (if I did this, I'd have no shower at all! LOL)
Only run the washer and the dishwasher on full loads.

Secret Santa, Part Two!
Remember I told y'all about the Secret Santa exchange I was taking part of, hosted by T.J. Maxx and Marshalls? Well, here are the goodies I received from my Secret Santa:

Thanks, Onika, from Cheapalicious!
And the person I was able to buy for, was Tiffany over at Babes and Kids Review. I sent her a photo album (that I wanted to keep for myself! lol) and something fun for her in the bath. Go stalk her blog, maybe she'll share pictures!
And I did promise I'd share with you all that my DH found for me with the $25 gift card - he did well! Here you go:

He even managed to get something for the doggies!

(I trained him well in the art of deal hunting, didn't I? LOL)

Happy New Year's, Y'all!
Tonight is the second full moon in a month - known as once in a Blue Moon. What's so nifty about it, since that happens every couple of years?

Well, this one's on New Year's Eve - which happens only once every 19 years or so.
I'm looking into my crystal ball and I forsee lots of good luck for us all! ;) Really, I hope 2010 is a better year for not only myself, but for a lot of you who also had a pretty blah blah lousy 2009.

If you're making a New Year's Resolution, I wish you lots of luck with it. Mine? To work on getting rid of more of this pesky debt! (So here's hoping the car hangs on without any more major issues, nothing else falls apart in our house, and all our pets stay healthy, since that's the cause of the debt!)

To a beautiful 2010 for us all! (snort snort, giggle giggle at the Executioner's Axe in the vintage New Year's card - the Victorians were something!)

Giveaway: Coleman Outdoors Gear Gift Card
I'm excited to share this giveaway with you, because I actually own a bunch of Coleman products in our camping/hiking and preparedness gear. I'm always on the hunt for vintage Coleman products when we thrift, because the old stuff, if taken good care of, lasts FOREVER. Trust me, my daddy was a Boy Scout leader, and put some of their products to the test back in the 70's and 80's, and he STILL has a lot of that gear! (Amazing, isn't it?)
Right now, Coleman has a great Twitter giveaway going on: Follow Coleman on Twitter, then tweet the answer to their question, "What would you buy this holiday season from Coleman.com and why?" Each day through January 13th, 2010, one lucky winner gets a $25 gift card to use on anything from Coleman.com!

Aaaannnd I get to give a $25 to Coleman to one of my readers too! You'll have to follow Coleman on Twitter (they'll verify that you are before they'll send out the gift card) but it only takes a few moments to sign up for Twitter if you haven't already... and a lot of bloggers give extra entries for following them or tweeting about their contest, so it's worth a few minutes of your time! (Plus, you can follow me and get the heads up on contests... or the weather in Washington LOL and other gossip, so you want to sign up, right? Pretty please?)
After you've signed up on Twitter, or if you're already on Twitter, follow Coleman, come back and leave your Twitter name... and answer this question:
"What would you buy this holiday season from Coleman.com and why?"
I'd take the $25 and put it towards snagging two of these life vests for the Psychotic Corgis:

Aren't they cute? LOL For Christmas, I bought my DH a fishing pole and some lures (shouldn't every guy have a valid excuse to get out of the house? It's like shopping with us women!) and he wants to take the doggies with him - so these would be perfect! Now to just win the Twitter giveaway!
Even if you don't hike, camp, hunt, etc, a lot of their products can come in handy - the lanterns during power outages for example. They even have pet beds and stuff for tailgating!
My giveaway ends January 9th, 2010 at 11:59 PM PST. US only, sorry. :( Be sure to leave your email in your comment too, or have it available on your profile - you can't win if I can't tell you that you won, right? Since there's one entry per person, you've got great odds! Good luck!! :)
Disclaimer: I didn't receive anything for this post, but one of my readers will win a $25 giftcard to Coleman.

Recipe: Creamy Cheese Chicken
This is super yummy, and stays under the $5 per meal mark if you have bought everything on sale. It's also super filling.
3/4 cup Italian Dressing
1/2 stick butter
1 pound boneless skinless chicken breast
1 can cream of chicken soup
1 package cream cheese (softened)
Go ahead and turn your slow cooker on high while preparing everything (lid closed! lol). Place the butter in bottom of slow cooker, and let it melt. (If you are short on time, feel free to cheat and have the butter melted in the microwave. I don't use one, so no cheating here) When the butter has melted, add the Italian dressing and stir into butter, making sure it's well mixed.
Now, you can either cut the chicken breasts into 1" strips OR just place it in the slow cooker, and shred it in the end. I found it easier to serve shredded, than cut. It's your personal preference though. Place the chicken in the slow cooker and stir well to coat with the Italian and butter mix, or if you are using the whole breasts, turn over a couple of times so it's well coated. Next, cut the cream cheese into half and place on top of the chicken.

Then follow with the Cream of Chicken soup.

Cover and cook on low for 6-8 hours.

Serve over rice, or spaghetti/noodles. (But I found it best on noodles vs rice myself)

(DH was starving, hence the giant plateful LOL)

Book Review: The Lightkeeper's Daughter by Colleen Coble
I recently received a copy of the novel The Lightkeeper's Daughter by Colleen Coble to review.

I admit, I always love losing myself in a historical novel. I enjoy romance novels, but I don't need a play by play, if you know what I mean. ;) For this reason, I enjoy Ms. Coble's novels - they are usually full of mystery with a little bit of religion and romance tossed in. Nothing overbearing, so even if you aren't of the Christian faith, you'll usually enjoy her books if you enjoy time period books.
The Lightkeeper's Daughter is the first book in the new Mercy Falls series, and is set in 1907. The main character is Addie Sullivan, who lives in a Northern California lighthouse. After her father passes away, she struggles with it, and with her unhappy mother, until one night during a storm, an injured stranger appears. This stranger insists she actually is a completely different person, having been taken away as a small child from her real family. Up until this part, the book is a little slow, but it really starts to pick up when Addie goes to visit the family she's never known, the Eatons. She becomes a governess to a little boy, and starts to have feelings for his widowed father, and the mystery of her past begins to unravel. Both her faith and love for John (the boys father, and whom she marries) are tested - I mean, really tested when she finds out some horrible secrets about her family.
The Lightkeeper's Daughter by Colleen Coble retails for $14.99 in trade paperback copy. (oversized paperback) Amazon has it for $10.19 at the moment, but Christian Book, a site I highly recommend, has it a little cheaper at $9.99. (of course, shipping comes into play)
I received a copy of this book to write my opinion.

Thrift Store Tuesday - End Of Year Finds
Welcome to another week of resale and thrift store shopping!
My question this week...
I think my favorite find was a zebra coat I found over the summer, since it seems to be one of the few wearable things for me!
We didn't hit the day after Christmas sales, but today we went to a thrift that had all of their holiday items for free! I picked up couple of ribbons to decorate outside with for next year, and these ornaments:

I got a kick out of the cow, lol. And free is definitely in my price range! ;)
So have you found anything good recently?

Fasten Your Seatbelts, The World Is Going Nuts
I have always loved to fly. I took my first flight when I was a couple of months old. I came this close to becoming a flight attendant. I've been lucky enough to fly lots of places, and never walked away from an excuse to travel.
Note I said loved. After 9/11, it became a hassle. Racial profiling bites. Don't even try to tell me they don't do that, because I was once stopped 5 times between the check in counter and getting in the plane for the SAME flight. I was felt up more than a porn star that trip, believe me. Yet I continued to fly, even after that nightmare trip...
The extra fees to check in the bag, pick your seat, blah blah... yeah... annoying, but I'll live. Not being able to bring half of what I need in carry on luggage? I'm not happy, but alright. Again, I'll live. Crammed like a sardine with just a can of soda? Really not happy, but whatever.
But now the latest rules (not set by the airlines!) saying for the last hour you not only cannot leave your seat, but you can't have anything on your lap? No toys, laptop, blanket? No BATHROOM?
Let me just say that this new rule clearly that wasn't decided by a woman, and most certainly not decided by a Mom. I don't know about y'all, but when you add up all the hassles, the ONLY way I am boarding a plane is if I have to cross the ocean, and I will think very, very hard before making that trip. Terrorists? They don't bug me. Well, let me rephrase that, because that totally doesn't sound right - I know the chances of it happening are slim. I probably could win the largest jackpot in lottery history before that could happen. (Big time terrorists KNOW we expect it to be a plane. This latest hijinx was probably Joe Schmoe trying to look cool and get with the terrorist in-crowd, c'mon)
Now not being able to pee when I really have to go? That's a killer. What next, do we have to wear diapers in the air?
Sorry airlines, but it's a lot cheaper to buy gas for this:

Diaper changes and potty training? A breeze on this vs a nightmare on the plane. No complaints about breastfeeding in public, either. Toys can get flung around the cabin, and so long as Daddy isn't whacked, it's all good. But my poor bladder would especially thank me for not flying ANY airline.
So I'm kind of curious if the UTI rate is going to rise in frequent flyers? What do you think? Do you think the world has gone nuts?
Update 7:19 PM: It looks like they are easing up on restrictions on the flights.

Yeah So It's Menu Planning Monday Time...

I have tons of food in the house (well, tons for me, anyways) but no desire to make anything at this moment. This is where I wish I could call in a chef for a week. ;) So I guess that makes this week's plan very tentative! Plus, my DH is working New Year's Eve/Day, so nothing special going on for us at home this year.
Monday: slow cooker roast chicken, potatoes, carrots & rolls
Tuesday: recipe of the week
Wednesday: Chicken tenders salad, rolls
Thursday: Slow Cooker BBQ Ribs
Friday: homemade pizza night
Saturday: Creamy Chicken & Rice Casserole
Sunday: orange chicken, rice, egg rolls

Review: Wendy's Spicy Chicken Nuggets
I was recently asked if I wanted to review Wendy's new Spicy Chicken Nuggets, so I was sent a $5 gift card to go try them.
.jpg)
Now I've admitted in the past, Wendy's doesn't get a lot of our fast food dollars, but sometimes I have a Frosty craving. ;) I was pleasantly surprised to see the Spicy Chicken Nuggets on the Value Menu - here it was just 99 cents, cheaper than their regular chicken nuggets at $1.29 (I know prices in different regions vary, so yours might be higher or lower) I had totally expected them to be in the $2 range.

Like the regular Chicken Nuggets, these spicy ones are made with all white meat chicken. The spices seem to taste the same as the Spicy Chicken sandwich, if you've had that before. Unlike the other nuggets, these are made with Japanese style breadcrumbs - although, they don't look like the Panko crumbs I've used, there is still a little bit of a difference as you can see here:

Overall for 99 cents, they aren't a bad deal at all. The Spicy Chicken Nuggets come with your dipping sauce of choice.
As stated above, I was sent a $5 Wendy's gift card to try out the new nuggets and share my personal opinion of 'em.

Thrifty Thursday - Those Holiday Sales
This week for my Thrifty Thursday post, I'm talking about all those fun after holidays season sales that will be starting on Saturday! Each store will be different in their clearance and mark down schedules, but many will end up at 90% off. Take advantage - even if you don't need decorations, think of things such as tape, white tissue paper for Valentine's and anniversary or wedding gifts (silver ribbons are great for wedding presents!). Many holiday themed gift baskets full of bath & body can be taken out of the packaging, and placed into a different basket or bag for birthdays, Valentine's Day (but save those baskets for next Christmas to put other goodies in!)
The grocery stores will start to have great markdowns as well on Saturday. Since many of the grocery stores close early on Christmas Eve and are closed on the 25th, in the morning of the 26th, you can find many deals. Milks and cheeses, bakery goods, nice roasts - all of these can be had for 30-50% off their regular prices.

It's Time For Another Retro Commercial Wednesday!
Direct Link For The Feedreaders
Wait, I want a butter conditioner in MY fridge! Think of the way we take our fridge for granted - having a separate freezing system with a second door.
I just wish my shelves slid out.

Thrift Store Tuesday - Holiday Clearance
Welcome to another week of resale and thrift store shopping!
My question this week...
Goodwill is supposed to be 50% off the day after Christmas, I think my DH wants to go. Some of the stores already seem to have their holiday decorations on sale now. Goodwill was at 50% off today, so I scored these two stocking hangers for $1 each.

So have you found anything good recently?

Random Thoughts Tuesday - Busy, Busy

I know I'm not blogging very much or late in the day with the holiday insanity. Bear with me. :) (Plus, I'm sure a lot of you are super busy too!)
I have a rip roaring headache today, and my right wrist has been bothering me so I can't lift much. Grrr!
Our little kitten has turned into a seafood crack addict. It's nice to have one so happy to be on a (mostly) raw diet. I still can't get the two older ones to join in though.
We're almost done with Lost Season 2, and have season 3 ready to go from the library. Can I just say I suffered from pantry envy when they opened that part of the hatch? Not the food in it, but having a separate pantry room with easy to get to shelves. I would LOVE that!
Actually, I wouldn't mind the whole hatch-y idea. Can you imagine how cheap the heating and cooling bill would be if your home was built into the ground? Take that, electric company! LOL I'd miss the sunlight though. :( I need me some sun!
Toooo many rude and crazy people while out grocery shopping today. Hello, slow down, flash a smile? How hard is it? It's not a race to the finish line, it's YOUR LIFE!
I'm pleasantly surprised at how many homes are so well decorated and lit for the holidays this year. I really thought folks would cut back, but I guess not. Just because we're not well lit, doesn't mean I don't appreciate the prettiness. :)

Recipe: Favorite Chocolate Chunk Cookies (Thanks To C&H Sugar!)
The folks over at Domino Sugar, C&H Sugar and their PR company recently contacted me about doing some holiday baking using their sugar and recipes on their site. They sent me over a $20 gift card to help out with buying ingredients for the recipes I wanted to try. I'm a little late with my post with the holiday insanity around here. :(
One of the best gifts you can do in this economy is give baked goods (if you know their dietary restrictions, of course) or cookie and bake mixes in a mason jar with a fun cookie cutter attached. They are easy on your budget to gift, plus the recipient gets something personal when you've made it. You can even make homemade sugar scrubs for folks to use in the shower!
I have to say, they have a pretty vast array of recipes over on their site! I seriously did not know what to make! (Plus, they even have links to print gift tags up at home! No searching around on the net for some!)
I finally decided on something I hoped I wouldn't mess up with my finicky oven - Favorite Chocolate Chunk Cookies. (They had me at chocolate!) I am changing one thing out of their recipe - you won't see the walnuts in my pictures. I was ready to do them, but I had an allergic reaction to something else this weekend, and we're eliminating most nuts from my diet for a few days just in case it happens again. (It was totally out of the blue, I don't usually have problems) This is fairly simple, so even if you don't bake, you can make fresh cookies from scratch with this one... I promise! :) (Plus, one of the best things of making from scratch is that you can easily double up on the chocolate!)
Preheat oven to 375°F.
Combine flour, baking soda, and salt in small bowl; stir. Cream together butter and sugars until light and fluffy. Add egg, water, and vanilla; beat well. Gradually add flour mixture. Stir in chocolate chunks and nuts.

Drop by rounded teaspoons onto cookies sheets. Bake 8-10 minutes or until lightly browned.

Now hopefully, your cookies look a LOT better than mine, since half the batch ended up over baked. :( Now I am positive something is up with this oven!
I received a $20 gift card to buy ingredients to try out a recipe from Domino's/C&H Sugar's website. I was already a regular user of the product(s) involved. My opinion of the recipe(s) is/are my own, your results may differ.

Thanks To This Blog
and all of you who read it, I turned some of those gift certificates for the blog tours into some great things! Longtime readers may remember that last year, my family sponsored 3 kids' gifts as part of the South Kitsap Helpline Holiday Gift Tree.
Well, this year "we" did 7! And two more Toys For Tots donations were made as well, bringing in a total of 9 kids getting great presents thanks to this blog!
I was so mad at myself for not taking pictures before I dropped off last week so you could see what we picked out (gah!) but next year I will be sure to write myself a note and remember. ;) We stuck to non battery operated toys, and went from everything from wooden play food, to a Potato Head police spud, to fun Nerf toys for older boys.
I hope to be able to double this amount again next year! Since I know this week is crazy for many of you as well, just in case you don't stop by again this week - I want to wish y'all Happy Holidays, and may the coming year be a wonderful one!

Blog Tour & Giveaway: WalMart
In this economy, I know we are all doing our best to save money and cut a few corners, but yet, we don't want to skimp too much this Holiday season. With this in mind, I wanted to participate in WalMart's blog tour, set up by MomCentral.

WalMart is trying to help families put together Christmas dinner for 8 for around $30, and New Year's Eve dinners for 10 for around $40. Right away when hearing this, I was assuming they mean sans coupons, and I was hoping it meant fresh food. I really wanted to hop on over and price point every item for a dinner for y'all, but the closest Super WalMart is nearly an hour away from here. Our little WalMart here in Port Orchard has an incredibly limited selection of food - basically milk and packaged. (Where's the fun in that?) Bremerton's selection isn't much better, either.
WalMart's Holiday dinner includes:
One 10-pound spiral cut half-ham
Three 8-ounce cans Del Monte Green Beans
One 10-pound bag of Russet potatoes
One 12-count package of Sara Lee dinner rolls
One 10 inch Pumpkin Pie
I've got to tell you, I thought $30 was rather high for that, but I guess that's me. ;) First of all, WalMart DOES accept printed internet coupons, so if you are following their menu plan, pop on over here and print this coupon to help you save $1.00 off 4 cans of those Del Monte veggies included in the list. And I probably don't have to tell you further, to buy another brand of dinner rolls to save even more money. And if you have a Fred Meyer in your area, borrow this week's ad (the one starting 12/20) to have them price match a Mrs. Smith's pumpkin pie for just $2. (So now your dinner for 8 has already been dropped to $25 or less, depending on the ham you choose!)
I personally take advantage of many items during the Thanksgiving sales for our holiday dinners here in December. I picked up an extra turkey for a little over $5 and kept it in the freezer until today actually. With my coupons and deals on Stove Top Stuffing, Heinz Gravy, and Betty Crocker Mashed Potatoes (less than $2 for the 3 items!), I've already got several side dishes. I'll be rounding it out with a nice Caeser salad, some homemade Garlic Cheese Biscuits that costs me less than a dollar to make a huge batch of, and I'll be baking something chocolate-y to go along with it.
On WalMart's site, you can find some great recipes and idea's from chef Aaron Sanchez, who you may recognize from the Food Network. (How I miss having that channel on all the time!)
Win it! MomCentral gave me two extra $30 gift cards to WalMart to give away to two readers! To enter, please tell me what your holiday dinner will be or was. Do you have a traditional dish in your family that is served every year?
As always, if you have completed the first entry above, you can also receive extra entries for:
-Subscribing to my feed OR following my blog
-Blogging about this giveaway with a link back
-Tweeting about this giveaway (leave the link or @psychotichouse me)
That's four (4) possible entries if you do each way above! Giveaway ends January 2nd at 11:59 PM PST, and please leave your email address in your entry or have it available in your profile. US only, sorry :( Good luck everyone!!

Review & Giveaway: Progresso High Fiber Homestyle Minestrone
MyBlogSpark recently sent me over a little gift pack with soup bowls and spoons, and a can of the new Progresso High Fiber Homestyle Minestrone Soup.

We eat a lot of soups here for lunch. (if you read my Food Storage Friday series, you may have seen the photo with the whole shelf full of soups, lol) I can make my own, but I usually find it a lot easier with our funky schedule to just pop open a can and have warm goodness in about 10 minutes. Progresso is actually our preferred brand, even though I admit I am not overly brand loyal on soups. I find it to usually have more vegetables and be more filling than other brands. Plus, I can often score it on sale for $1 and use coupons. (Remember my post about the 16 Progresso soups and broths for $1.80 a few days ago?)
Apparently, the new Progresso High Fiber soups have 28% of the daily value for fiber in the average adult's diet. It's available in four different varieties: Creamy Tomato Basil, Hearty Vegetable and Noodle, Chicken Tuscany, and the flavor we were sent to try - Homestyle Minestrone.
The Progresso Homestyle Minestrone was chock full of vegetables, pasta, and the way they get the fiber in it - beans. Yes, lots of beans. Cheap, filling beans:

See that hot steaming goodness? One serving runs about 110 calories, and there is about 2 servings per each can. I have to say, I was pretty stuffed after eating my serving. I had that with a little roll leftover from dinner last night and I about rolled myself away from the table. LOL I like that it's filling, because otherwise you feel like you need a couple of cans to make a nice lunch, and this keeps the cost down (not to mention the calories!!) As with most canned goods, it does have a bit of unnecessary extra sodium in it, but that's the trade off with convenience. It's not as bad as it is with some soups at least!

Win it! One lucky reader will win their own Progresso High Fiber Prize Pack, just like the one I received, thanks to Progresso and MyBlogSpark. (Trust me, even though this bowl is branded, you are going to fall in LOVE with it! It even has a spot for your thumb for drinking broth! I'm thinking I'll be using them to make giant vats of hot chocolate too!) To enter, tell what your favorite flavor of soup is (it doesn't have to be this kind, don't worry). Do you folks eat a lot of soup too in the cooler months, or are we just weird? ;)

Right now, many local Fred Meyer stores are giving a 10% discount on items such as apparel, etc on Tuesdays if you were born in 1955 or before. Check with your store to see if they are participating, and for the full list of items you can get the discount on.
You should begin receiving your Fred Meyer rewards in the next week or so if you haven't already - contact Freddy's if it doesn't appear by next week!
Unfamiliar with Fred Meyer's coupon policy? They allow you stack a Fred Meyer store coupon (FM coupons as I call them) with a manufacturer's coupon. They do not price match to any other store's sale prices, and they won't take other store's sale coupons. You can however use a manufacturer's coupons on any sale or clearance items, but they usually won't allow any overage if the coupon is more than the sale price (sometimes it slips through the cracks, but don't expect it every time). Our local Washington stores do not double any coupons. They do accept the printed internet coupons if they have a barcode (like bricks coupons or from Smart Source or coupons.com if you are unfamiliar with them) so if you are having problems with a clerk not wanting to accept your coupon and you are sure it's legit coupon, please ask to have a manager come on over to verify it.

The Seattle Animal Shelter Has Lost Their Minds
Pretty much every single pet that has ever wandered into my life has been a shelter rescue or flat out rescue. I think anyone can pretty much guess that if you're furry, I have no problem opening my doors to you, as evidenced by our current 7 pets. ;) I donate as much as I can to animal causes, have volunteered my time for a local rescue group, and I do every little thing I can such as clicking those little buttons on my side bar to help companies donate food.
I was well aware that King County was cutting the tax funding for the Seattle animal shelter, but this - this is a little much to stomach. Not only are they raising license fees in Seattle, but starting in 2010, the total cost for adopting a dog will be from $202 to $237 and for a cat will range from $152 to $157.
Are they NUTS? I think they are. I know what I've spent on my rescues, so I know what the costs are that go into getting these furkids ready for adoption. Spaying and vaccinations aren't free, after all. But holy smokes, the average person on the street is NOT GOING TO PAY THAT AMOUNT. They're not. Point blank, Seattle Animal Shelter is writing the death sentence for a lot of these animals in this economy. I'm absolutely horrified! Have they missed that drops offs have increased so much because folks cannot even afford to feed their pets?
Yes, private rescue groups charge the same amount or more, but these pets have usually been under someone's care for several weeks, and behavior problems have been addressed or at least noted. These pets have mingled in amongst our families, socialized, and screened for the right home. The Seattle Animal Shelter isn't exactly doing that. I know when Housekeeping Cat came to us from the Tacoma Shelter on death row, it was a total wild card as to how she'd behave. And she certainly wasn't completely screened for being healthy - we had several vet visits that first week.
I feel so bad for those poor animals. :(

Food Storage Friday - Repackaging
With rising prices, bad weather, unstable job environments, one of the best things we as women (or men) in charge of our homes can do, is work on our food storage to ensure our family will continue to eat well no matter what the circumstance is. It doesn't take a lot to organize your pantry and make a little room for extras, and with the help of coupons and sales, can be done very cheaply. Every Friday, I'd like to encourage you to join in with me to do one or two little things to add to or work with your food storage.
This week I'd like to recommend that you consider storing boxed or bagged items in glass jars. I know glass is breakable, but it helps keep your items store longer, and helps keeps bugs and critters out of your food. For instance, I store my barley and different rices in jars:

Now if you use clear jars like some of mine, remember to keep them out of the sunlight as much as possible. You can also use plastic rubbermaid-type containers, but I shy away from them because plastic does break down with time, plus some plastics can put odors into the food. If you are like me and buy the large bags of rice, be sure that you are storing them in FOOD GRADE buckets or bins. Remember, if they aren't food grade, they have plastics that can leach into the foods. One quick trick I've used to give an extra layer of protection on your shelves - I use the XL and XXL Ziploc Storage Bags to keep my bags of sugar, etc in. While it won't help you if you have critter problems, it should help you with any bugs or ants, etc during the summer months.
If you are on the hunt for those food safe buckets, try contacting a local bakery. They might give them to you, or charge a minimal cost. You'll probably have to scrub them well, especially if they once contained icing, but it will help store your food, especially if you are running out of room on your shelves with all the deals you've scored.
This week, I'd like to encourage you to stock up on an extra box/container of something to drink: maybe hot cocoa, bottled apple juice, kool aid packets, etc. I've seen lots of good deals on the hot cocoa - even the Dollar Tree has had some in, so it's an easy and cheap addition to your food storage.

Thrifty Thursday - Holiday Stock Ups
This week for my Thrifty Thursday post, I want to remind you to take advantage of the last minute holiday food deals. We're coming to the end of the time each year when baking supplies go on sale - what you see this time of year is generally the lowest you will find all year! Roasts, ham, turkeys can also be found at good prices, so be sure to stock up, and check the expiration dates before you put them in the cart. Most items stored properly will be good for awhile.
I know I've personally come across lots of nice cuts of meat priced at just $2.99 or less a pound - I've been wishing I had a bigger deep freezer!

CD Review: Tony Bennett - A Swingin' Christmas
I recently received a copy of the CD from Tony Bennett A Swingin' Christmas featuring The Count Basie Big Band to review.

Actually, I'll be honest, I have no idea who sent it, because I have no recollection of being asked if I wanted to review it. (Bueller? Bueller?) I must have? Some days, it's like a game of Clue around here. But hey, it's the holidays, and I'll take any excuse to hear "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas". ;) Even though I freely admit that this genre isn't my usual, I can still appreciate it and enjoy it.
A Swingin' Christmas contains 11 different holiday tracks, and Mr. Bennett, as always from what I've heard of his in the past, is at his finest. If you're looking for a different spin on Christmas classics with that big band twist, you'll probably be in heaven with this CD. I actually had no idea that it had been 40 years since Tony Bennett recorded a Christmas album when this one was released back in 2008. This was actually recorded live at Bergen Pac in Englewood, NJ. Here's the track listing:
1. I'll Be Home For Christmas
2. Silver Bells
3. All I Want For Christmas Is You
4. My Favorite Things
5. Christmas Time Is Here
6. Winter Wonderland
7. Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas
8. Santa Claus is Coming to Town
9. I've Got My Love To Keep Me Warm duet with Antonia
10. The Christmas Waltz
11. O Christmas Tree
If you're on the hunt for a Christmas related CD to listen to right now, Tony Bennett's A Swingin' Christmas is definitely a worthy choice. If you need a last minute Christmas gift for an older family member, or someone that likes the Big Band sound, they'll probably love it. (I know Tony Bennett is another one of my grandmother's favorites) Right now, it's on sale at Amazon for $10.99, and you can listen to some clips from the album over there before deciding to buy.
I received this CD to listen to so I could write my personal opinion of it. My opinions may differ from yours.

DVD Review: Spongebob Season 6 Volume 1
My family and I recently received a copy of Spongebob Season 6 Volume 1 on DVD to review.

Spongebob Season 6 Volume 1 is a two disc set containing 24 animated cartoon episodes from season 6 (of course). It also includes the widescreen one hour special Truth or Square from the 10th anniversary special. (Has it really been around this long already? Wow! lol)
Season 6 continues with Spongebob working at the Krusty Krab, Plankton trying to steal the Krabby Patty's secret recipe, Mr. Krabs hoarding every penny, Spongebob's usual, slightly annoying laugh, and Patrick's slightly cloudy and dense way of life. My favorite episode was "House Fancy", where Squidward tries to make his house fancier than his old nemesis from high school, Squilliam's. (I found great amusement in that every time he tried to fix something, something else fell apart... you know, kind of like here!)
As always with Spongebob, there's the usual humor with some things that will go over kids heads. (which is why us adults tend to like it, I guess) A few moments can be questionable for the younger crowd - Patrick's rear end is shown in an episode, and there is jumping brains in another - most kids will be giggling away.
The set also features The Spongebob History Song and 7 shorts. It's Not Rated, is presented in full screen format, and the total running time of both discs is 324 minutes long with the extra features. There is no obvious gory violence, or bad words that I heard throughout the disc.
Spongebob Season 6 Volume 1 was released on DVD on December 8th, 2009, and has suggested retail price of $26.99 (though Amazon has it on sale for $22.99 right now) The cover is embellished, and this makes a great stocking stuffer for the Spongebob fan!

'Tis The Season To Win!

Here's a bunch of winners! Check your emails folks!
The winner of the $25 Kroger/Fred Meyer gift card to take care of their pets is:

My sweet pet is an older dog that I adopted from our local pound. They estimated that he was nine when we adopted him almost three years ago, and it was obvious to us that he was abused. He has been nothing but the most loving little guy, and he really enjoys his plush doggie donut bed that we purchased at Sam's. He likes Pupperoni and any other soft, meat-flavored treat. Thanks for this opportunity! I'd love to spoil my fur baby ;)
The winner of the Norah Jones giveaway is:

I Get To Play Secret Santa Thanks To T.J. Maxx!
Recently I was contacted and asked if I wanted to participate in a Secret Santa gift exchange sponsored by T.J. Maxx and Marshalls. I was given two $25 gift cards to find the perfect gift for another blogger, and finish up some of my holiday shopping. I can't tell you yet who the blogger is that I was buying for, but I'll tell you in a few days when we reveal what we each received.

So off to T.J. Maxx we went. I handed DH his gift card after pointing him in the direction of the kitchen and home goods and said Surprise Me! and headed off to pick up my Secret Santa gift. Let me tell you it was FUN but it also was totally hard - I just could not decide what to buy, because the shelves were pretty packed with lots of good things! I know sometimes it's hit or miss when you go to these places, but T.J. Maxx was definitely ready for the holidays.
I met DH in line, and the guy outdid himself. Seriously. I was trying not to peek, but his cart was FULL. (This is one of the joys of being married to a guy who loves to shop, and has been well trained in the art of deal hunting) He swears he went over the $25 by less than $1.
How many more days until Christmas? I don't want to wait to find out what all he bought! LOL! And I can't wait to try to guess who my Secret Santa is and what goodies I'll be getting!
Right now, T.J. Maxx is sponsoring "Carol-oke" - a fun contest that you can participate in by uploading a video of yourself singing carols on YouTube. The grand prize is a $5,000 shopping spree, and there are other prizes to be won too! Plus for every video that is uploaded, T.J. Maxx and Marshalls will donate $1 towards the purchase of new toys to Toys Foir Tots (up to $50,000!) So even if you can't sing, it's still a good cause to embarass yourself for! ;)

What Is It?
What is it with men and bacon?
DH has the day off, so I asked him if he wanted a full breakfast, or if he just wanted to do "his thing" (cereal, you dirty gutter minds). Immediately he asks what I was thinking.
Eggs and bacon with toast? I said back.
Enter the commercial with the Beggin Wraps. You know the one where the dog is sniffing around the kitchen going BACON? BACON? This one:
Direct Link for the feedreaders
Yeah, that was my DH at the word bacon. Just a little too excited.
Side note: I didn't realize Beggin' Strips and Wraps were that old. LOL And now that I think about it, I probably don't want to know what was in those treats. *shudders*

General Mills Lowering Sugar In Kids Cereals
I know a lot of Moms are anti-sugary cereals. Me, I'm not really one of them. I'd far rather see a regular serving size bowl of cereal being eaten, rather than breakfast being skipped entirely. Kids are kids - a bowl of cereal each morning is not the end of the world if they are eating properly throughout the day. Saying food is bad and not allowing it at home only makes kids want to eat when they aren't at home. I've said it before, I'm not a fan of pointing out calories and meal portions to kids - if you do so, you're just setting them up for an eating disorder down the road. (And that's something I personally know more about than I want to) Three well rounded meals a day, with healthy snacks, and plenty of exercise (some days I wish video games had never been invented!), and I don't feel we as parents have much to be worried about.

A few days ago, MyBlogSpark informed me that General Mills announced a commitment to reduce the sugar in their branded kid friendly cereals to single digit grams of sugar per serving. I find that a really good thing. (Now, if they could just cut the coloring down a little bit more in a few of them!) We always have on hand a lot of cereal in our home, and I have no problem with the munchkin chomping down on Cheerios as a snack. DH has himself a bowl every morning - I think he was eating Cookie Crisp today, lol.
According to the information they sent me, 1998 study showed that children who eat breakfast tend to perform better at school. I totally agree with this: Hunger makes the mind wander - sugar can too, of course, but hunger is a lot worse. Most cereals have a lot of fiber that is filling, and keeps kids going until lunchtime.
Plus, cereal is a frugal choice for breakfast if bought on sale and with a coupon - and with the economy the way it is, that's a good thing. Right now if you visit their website, you can print a coupon to save $1.00 off your next purchase of General Mills cereals, including Trix, Cocoa Puffs, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, and Lucky Charms. Pair that up with a great sale, and you can land boxes of cereal for under $1! (It's a Bricks coupon, so you can print it twice)
And don't forget to clip those Box Tops For Education to send in to your schools! If your school doesn't participate, or you homeschool, maybe you can post them on FreeCycle or Craigslist for someone to claim and submit to their school. Every little bit helps!
For my post, MyBlogSpark is sending me a couple of coupons to try the new cereals, and they also provided me with links to read about some of the information in these studies as well as the information about the reduced sugar.

Thrift Store Tuesday - Wish Lists
Welcome to another week of resale and thrift store shopping!
My question this week...
Right now I'm on the hunt for a cast iron dutch oven - a nice one in like new condition would be my ultimate find for the coming year!
I hit up Value Village a few days ago and choked at the prices - just when I thought they couldn't go any higher, they sure did! I did break down and pick up a Tripp skirt at the outrageous price of $9.99, but only because I already own a couple of other pieces in that line, or there's no way I would pay that much. (Seriously, Hot Topic clearance is about the same price new! No pictures because it's in the laundry right now) I about died at a pair of boots that probably came from the same person priced at - are you ready for this? $49.99! If I had brought my camera along, I totally would have taken some photos to share with you of the pricing insanity. There was another pair of shoes priced at $29.99 - I almost bought them in the (real) store (on clearance), and they were only $34.99 full price then! Forget the holiday decorations, I ran out of there at a small holiday plate priced at $4.99.
So have you found anything good recently?

What's your thrift store and secondhand wish list? What would you like to score in the coming year?

Nutella + Diet Dr. Pepper = Breakfast of Mom Champions. LOL
Seriously, I did not want to get out of bed again this morning - I made DH get up first and hold down the fort. It's this dreary, wet weather - I blame that! (Way better than snow, don't get me wrong)
I am all excited - Thanks to ZoomPanel, I was able to cash my points out for NCIS Season 1 - FINALLY I have it! DH has this wish list at Amazon a mile long, so I usually give him all my Amazon GCs I cash out for and indulge him. (It's kind of my bribery tradeoff so that he doesn't spend him paychecks on DVDs and games) Anyways, in their DVD sets, they finally placed NCIS so I grabbed it as quick as I could. I've scored some nice sets through them, I have to say after MyPoints, Zoompanel definitely is my favorite. If I could remember to use SwagBucks, it might round out my top 3. lol
Actually, I've been really spoiled in cashing out from sites online lately. I didn't realize how much I had accumulated over the last few months - thank goodness, because it's really helped, even if it's just as a moral booster around here. I doubt DH will even see anything for the holidays from his job. :( I mean it's not like I expect a trip to the Taj Mahal or anything, but a nice greeting card, and even a little gift card to something they can get a lunch at would mean the world to these guys. It might make up for the giant scratch on his face my DH came home with a few weeks ago from a deranged resident at work.
The corgis are bored. Actually, I think everyone not napping is bored around here. I wish I had time to be bored.
DH asked for hot dogs for dinner. He seriously wants to grill. Alrighty then... guess I don't have to make dinner. No complaints here!

Review & Giveaway: Subway
With the hustle and bustle this holiday season, sometimes it's really hard to eat right. While I talk about having dinner prepared ahead of time with your slow cooker or in the freezer, ready to go in your oven, sometimes that just doesn't work when you are out all day and need lunch!
I was contacted on Subway's behalf and asked to do a review and host an awesome giveaway for you, my lovely readers! I am all about value, and Subway's $5 footlong choices definitely provide value. (Though, I am still sulking that all our local Subways have taken the Tuna sub off the $5 menu - wah!) I can pick up a foot long and get two meals out of it, plus they are one of the few fast food places that has a decent vegetarian choice in their Veggie Sub. Subway currently also has several new Subway "Melts", including the Chicken Cordon Bleu, and a Chicken Marinara sub.

I ended up ordering the Oven Roasted Chicken Breast off the $5 menu, because let's face it, most of us order off the value menu anyways. I almost went with the Chicken Marinara because it was also $5, but I was craving the veggies - I ended up with all of them on it except the jalapenos (We were out and about and I was worried about heartburn, or I would have gobbled them up!) It was so stuffed with veggies by the time she was done, it was practically falling apart:

My DH ordered the Black Forest Ham sub and took it to work (or I'd have a picture of that one for you) and he enjoyed it. Like me, he added a lot of veggies on it - except he ate it in one sitting! Men! lol
If you are looking for a practical stocking stuffer this holiday season, right now Subway is giving away a free Snickerdoodle cookie with the purchase of every $10 Subway gift card - methinks that's a win-win situation. ;) Plus, I noticed their kids meals are coming with a cute WWF sponsored reuseable lunch bag right now - they have a little leopard print one that's just adorable. Subway can also be found on Twitter - @SubwayFreshBuzz.
Win it! Subway has given me 3 $25 gift cards for three lucky winners! To enter, tell me what your favorite meal from Subway is. Are you all done with your holiday shopping? Still stuck on trying to find the perfect gift for someone?
I'll give you an extra entry if you follow @SubwayFreshBuzz on Twitter!
