Kids Craft: Invisible Ink

So it's a rainy day, and you've heard "I'M BORED!" for the zillionith time. Maybe your electricity is out, and they can't play video games (or maybe you've grounded them from them, lol). Why not entertain the kids having them make secret messages to each other?

First, you'll need a good sheet of paper, and I recommend unlined (not out of a notebook with lines).

You'll also need: lemon juice (the bottled stuff is fine, you don't need fresh) poured into a small dish, a toothpick or cotton swab (or, if you happen to have any fun feathers around - those are PERFECT!), and later, a heat source - you can use a hot light bulb, the sun if it's really warm outside, or even a warmed cookie sheet (this part will be where parental supervision comes in)

Get the piece of paper and have the kiddos write the note. It can be as lengthy as they want it to be - they can even draw a treasure map! Allow the paper to dry completely before rolling it up. Next is another fun part - "hiding" the notes to each other!

After the notes have been found, you'll want to reveal the secret messages! Hold the paper about 4" or so from the heat source, and be patient for a moment while the messages are revealed! Make sure you are very careful the paper doesn't catch on fire!!

This is great for a pirate themed birthday party too - create a map in pieces - each hidden message leads to another clue to where the loot could be hidden!
