As long term readers may remember, back in October Captain had a pretty wicked bacteria infection where we almost lost him. The poor little guy on top of that the following week had surgery to remove half of his teeth. :( We immediately went on a homemade diet. It works for us since I am usually in the kitchen anyways. (It's not any harder than making baby food, in fact it's even easier since it doesn't have to be pureed) Not being very happy after all those pet food recalls a few years ago, and since they couldn't quite figure out why he had that infection, homemade was the path of least resistance - especially because he was considered anorexic. I had been fighting a battle to get him to eat since we brought the little guy home. Steak? Chicken? Veggies? Gobbled. The food argument was solved, and he's gained several pounds since then.
So at this point you're probably going "Storm? What's your point? Why are you telling us this?"
I know, I know. I ramble on.
A lot. ;)
Anyways, when I read the email, DH was still home so I told him about it. We had actually been discussing food in an emergency situation for the dogs a few days earlier. I'm sure after Hurricane Katrina, the whole world learned that 99.9% of emergency shelters will not allow pets of any kind in. (Hence why a lot of folks stayed behind) Now there are some shelters just for your pets in an emergency situation after what happened, but you have to have your pet secured in a crate, up to date with vaccinations and proof (this is why I suggest a copy of your last vet visit paperwork taped to all pet crates in a waterproof folder/envelope!), and most importantly, food for the pet(s) while they are at the shelter.
You can't exactly stop by the shelter with a crock pot full of beef stew in a situation like that, can you? And in an emergency situation, you can't really stop at Petsmart to come up something you think your pet might eat. We really need to have on hand a 3 day supply of food Captain would eat. (The Grumpy Princess will eat just about anything nailed down. She's no problem, lol)
So to get back to Taste of the Wild, I was happy to see that their products are completely grain free. A lot of allergies can be caused by grains and I knew this was an ingredient I wanted to avoid. I also wanted a good quality pet food. I don't really want to be knocking grocery store pet foods, but it goes back to the whole allergen situation. I wanted any food that we would try to have the first ingredients to be meat, more meat, and even more meat. (Hey, dogs are carnivores!) Some brands, I look at the ingredient list and just cringe. I know money plays a factor in food choices by owners sometimes, but still. Taste of the Wild also has fruits and vegetables in their ingredient list. (It's a lot more digestible than "fillers" like corn is.) You can purchase it at small pet boutiques and feed stores (local folks - you can purchase it at once of the corgi's FAVORITE stores - The Posh Paw over in Gig Harbor (I can't recommend those folks enough!!!), as well as over at Del's Feed Store over here in Port Orchard) You can also order online from lots of great stores.
Also, Taste of the Wild also is good for dogs in all life stages - you don't have to buy a different kind once they outgrow the puppy stage, or if they are starting to get a little older. It comes in dry kibble, or if you're in a situation like me, canned with an easy pop top. (Perfect for emergency situations!)
We were sent several cans of each variety, as well as some sample bags of the dry kibble. We decided to try out the Pacific Stream Canine Formula With Smoked Salmon. This is a 13.2 ounce can, so depending on your feeding schedule and your dogs weight, you may need less than one can or more than one. My two eat twice a day, so I split this between the two of them for breakfast:
I was a little hesitant to feed it to them. It looked alright, and I could clearly see even potatoes. I was just worried Captain would snub it. I actually didn't have anything to worry about, because he inhaled it faster than a speeding bullet:
Whew.
I waited another 24 hours to make sure neither of them were having any ill effects (*coughs* rear end issues), and went on to try the Wetlands Canine Formula in Gravy. They gobbled it up just as quickly, and no problems. They also tried the High Prairie Canine Formula in Gravy (made with bison, venison and lamb, as well as peas and potatoes) and they enjoyed it as well - no arguments about eating it!
So we'll be adding a 3 day supply of Taste of the Wild to our emergency supplies for the corgis. (They have their own backpack with everything they need for 3 days away from home, so we can just grab it and go.) The cans run around $2 each for a 13.2 ounce can, a 15 pound bag of dry kibble runs about $25 - average for pet food store prices.
BTW, just in case someone thinks I'm selling out for a free product: I still recommend homemade food. However, Taste of the Wild is a good choice if you're not ready to make that step, and definitely great for emergency situations like what I was talking about above if you already do. While I do homemade, I'm not 100% strict - my dogs still get commercial dog treats from time to time and their beloved "boneys" (those rawhide and busy bones) - well, Captain just drools on them, but they still get them. LOL
Win it! One lucky reader will a great prize pack that includes: three cans of Taste of the Wild, three samples of Taste of the Wild dry food, a $30 gift card to PetFoodDirect.com, a sample of Bright Bites, a Bright Bite collar and the book, "101 Dog Tricks: Step by Step Activities to Engage, Challenge, and Bond with Your Dog” (I'm jealous! That's a great prize pack!) To enter, just tell me all about your dog. :) Are you familiar with this brand?
As always, if you have completed the first entry above, you can also receive extra entries for:
-Subscribing to my feed OR following my blog
-Blogging about this giveaway with a link back
-Tweeting about this giveaway (leave the link or include @psychotichouse)
That's up to four (4) possible entries! Giveaway ends April 10th, 2010 at 11:59 PST. US Only, sorry. :( Please leave your email address in your comment, or have it available in your profile so I can contact you if you've won. Winners drawn via Random.org.
I received samples of this product. All opinions are my own, yours may differ. If you are considering switching brands of dog food from your usual, please be careful, and do the switch slowly. If your dog doesn't want to eat it, don't force them. Many good pet food stores will take back an open pet food for in store credit if your pet doesn't like it!

I have a Beagle that is 4 1/2 named Mali. She is a a bit over weight and thinks she is a lap dog! I got her off of Craigslist 4 Summers ago from a lady who was homeless for the time being.
I think that Mali was abused from different behaviors she has. If anyone yells she really cowers by me and shakes. I am her mama and proud of it. My husband is jealous of how much more I prefer her over him. *His words not mine*.
I am interested in learnng more about making Mali as well as my cat home made food. What is a good site to learn more? Oh and I have not heard of that brand but I am interested!
I have a 7 year old female German Shepherd. I gave her a sample of this food a few years ago that I got at a pet store. She really liked it, but it's pretty expensive. It seems to be a high quality product.
I was "adopted" by a now ~12 year old mixed breed, and she's been a wonderful companion. Sometimes it's way too easy to forget how long we've been together - between the cat and her own wonderful personality, she stays pretty young... :)
Our dog loves to bark as if she can talk.
I have a bulldog who eats this brand because of allergies.
Charlie is a 3 y.o. mut Terrier who barely tolerates Caesar. Maybe this would work for him.
We have a 2 year old Black Lab named Robin. I inherited her - when we started dating. She's such the attention whore (don't worry - she's spayed).
She's a great dog, but has stomach issues, I think this is because she had Parvo when she was younger. She's all better now.
Right now she's sitting upstairs with DH and keeping him company while he sleeps :).
We have a 6 year old yellow lab named Scooter. The best description is to say just read Marley and Me because other than not being afraid of thunder storms, I think Scooter is the reincarnation of Marley. He has slowed down a bit though because he tore his ACL in his left rear leg and the operation was only partially successful.

I have a teacup chihuahua that's a year and a half who is the pickiest eatter. She eats Royal Canin Chihuahua-28 and Natures Recipe canned.
We recently adopted a schnauzer that's about 9 months old who would probably eat anything if he had it in front of him but he has digestive issues and we're still working on finding the perfect food for him. Maybe Taste of the Wild is it...

I am not familiar with the brand. I do not have my own dog but I have a four-legged niece named Genevive. She is treated like a child by my sister and visits often. She is a lovable spaz! I would use/spend this prize on her for when she comes to visit me, her "Aunt Sarah".
Our dog is a 5 month old lab/pit mix. He is spoiled rotten. I have never heard of this brand before.

We just got a doggy, a 2 year old Affenpinscher. We got her about a month agoa dn originally it was suppose to be my husbands job but the little dog is afraid of him and follows me around everywhere!
Thanks!
I subscribe to the blog!!! As you know lol
My dog, Yuki, is an 11-month Siberian Husky with a quarter German Shepherd. She's young, but quickly learning how to become a good companion. I love to spoil her, and have been considering Taste of the Wild for a while. Definitely interested in it! Don't like too much filler in the foods I feed her, and since this has no grain, that's perfect~!
Chance is a dog we've taken under our wing. He's a spaniel mix.
No, I've never heard of this brand.

Yes, I've heard of Wild Dog and yes, I would love to try it or should I say, Rusty and Suki Suki would love to try it.

Our beloved furbaby is our puppy GingerBelle. She is a 10 week old Shih Tzu and she currently weighs 4.5 lbs! She is such a sweet baby and she has made a wonderful addition to our family. My 11 yr old daughter is technically her "mama"...which makes me "nanny"!
GingerBelle has been a very bright spot for my daughter and has really changed my daughter's outlook on everything. She takes great care of her "baby" and makes me very proud. It doesn't hurt that I get to snuggle and spoil Ginger either!!
Thanks for the chance to win!

I have 10 year old schnoodle. We have had her seven years. She came tousa a stray and was in terrible shape - heartworm positive, terribly matted hair with skin infections underneath, ear infections and any parasite you can think of. She is a wonderful dog, and a great addition to our family. She has helped foster over 40 kittens.
I am familiar with Taste of the Wild. Duchess normally eats grain free Canidae, but I have thought of getting a sample of Taste of the Wild to see how she likes it.

Not familar with the product, but have a snoring 60 lb. English bulldog sleeping behind me. His name is Abraham, but we usually call him Abey Baby. He is often a very bad boy, but very much loved.
I have 2 dogs. One is a beagle/Chihuahua mix and the other is a Chihuahua. Both dogs were rescued. I am familiar with Taste of the Wild. I feed our dogs the Venison and Buffalo dry food. They love it. The Chihuahua's previous owner told me he didn't like to eat. He inhales is food now (she was feeding him cheap stuff that had corn as the second ingredient). We get ours at Care-a -lot. We find it doesn't cost much more than the cheapier made foods. The dogs fart less, too.

This would be marvelous! I have two miniature poodles, Jake and Indiana, that I am struggling to feed. I have been giving them generic pet food for a few years but have recently become more wise to the realities of most pet food qualities. I have been researching and researching and have been seriously considering Taste of the Wild for them. Cost is absolutely a concern for me, but the cost to quality ratio seems good for TOTW. Anyway, a few samples wouldn't hurt. :D
Thank you for the opportunity!

My name is Brutus and I am a food-a-holic. I am a boxer who LOVES food. When my family goes to work I just help myself to what is lying around-bread, raw egg noodles, and I even clean out the trash can. My family gets very upset when they come home and say I need help. I try to control my food urges, but I can't seem to stop myself even though I know it's not good for me. So I snuck on my Mom's computer to win this contest I LOVE FOOOOOD!!!

I have two beautiful, fantastic dogs, both rescues. Foxy is a funny 25 lb terrier mix who runs to the door and jumps as high as the doorknob when you ask her if she wants to go for a ride. She hangs her head out the window and SMILES. Little kids get such a kick out of her - all the time I hear them saying "Look, Mommy - that dog is smiling!"
Lucy is our ferocious 4 lb Chihuahua that loves Three Dog Bakery Cookies. She knows that if she is a good girl when she is outside she will get a cookie when she comes in. If she barks while out, she just heads to her bed when she comes in - if not, she runs to the kitchen and waits.
I have heard great things about this dog food and would love to try it! I have 4 "furry members of the family". They look around like "who are you talking to?" if you call them dogs...LOL. Niqu and Loki are my senior shepherds and just great protectors. Belle was left at the dump and is very timid but very loving. Beau is my newest addition. He is a 9 week old mini dachshund and is the biggest love bug you have ever seen! I love them all! Thanks!

I have never heard of this brand, but "Penny" (my dachshund) would love to try it.
My dog is a large 10 year old white male poodle. He is a crazy boy that loves to eat, but is not a fan of dog food. He is not overweight at all.
Yes, I have seen this dogfood and I would like to try it. Jack needs to eat food that is grain- free now or he gets very itchy and goes nuts and he turns pink when he bleeds it stains his hair! I found that out when he tried a new food and then figured at his age he had to quit the grain, which they don't digest well. (Same for me as I do best on low carb for my arthritis). So I would like to try this one and see how he likes it and how he does on it.
I follw and subscribe.
I blogged here:http://forums.online-sweepstakes.com/blog.php?b=2193
I'd love to win. Actually my pooch would love this. Right now we have him on Blue Buffalo but I'm open to trying other natural brands. I have a friend who has pet foxes and she does a lot of research on cat and dog food. After I realized all of the additives and grade D (and possibly rancid) ingredients in most dog food I am now very particular about what our pets eat. In fact they probably eat better than we do!
Anyway I am sure that Steffan would like to try this. The price is comparable to what we pay now, so if he finds it tasty we might give it a try.
