Green Giant is celebrating the 40th anniversary of Earth Day by giving $200,000 to The Nature Conservancy to help fund an innovative project that will encourage greener farming practices to repair and protect a natural treasure - the Root River, one of Minnesota´s (home to Green Giant) best trout streams.
I actually didn't even know Green Giant was headquartered in Minnesota - behold, the power of the internet. (LOL) Here are some of the things Green Giant has been working on to reduce its environmental footprint:
Reducing the amount of land and water needed to grow vegetables
Packing vegetables in smaller, lighter cans, so it takes less fuel to deliver them to supermarket shelves
Utilizing traditional seed breeding methods over the last 35 years to double the amount of sweet corn grown on an acre of land
Teaming up with growers to install a more efficient irrigation system that can reduce water use by more than a million gallons a year;
Switching to more earth-friendly paperboard to package frozen vegetables, saving approximately 54,000 trees annually in the process.
I'll be honest, when I read the whole lighter, smaller cans line, I figured yeah - you're making the product smaller with less inside, but still charging the same price so your profit goes up. Sigh.
Yes, I'm still cranky about the economy. I do totally appreciate what they are trying to do for our planet, though, and I do purchase many Green Giant products, especially:

I buy it a lot already - we love our cheese around here! :) They sent me over a fun little "Seeds of Change" prize pack that included a coupon for a free package of Green Giant frozen vegetables, a mini herb garden, an eco-friendly bamboo utensil set, and a 100% recyclable grocery tote. As you may know my love of wooden kitchen goodies, I was all over the utensils in a New York minute. And the little mini herb garden is awesome! (Here's hoping I don't kill it like I usually do with my indoor plants) I used my coupon on the Broccoli and Cheese, so I'll be using it in my Cheesy Hash Browns. Mmmmm!

If you'd like to learn more about Green Giant´s sustainability program or make a donation to The Nature Conservancy, visit http://www.GreenGiant.com/sustainability during the month of April. And if you're a coupon user too, they have a Bricks printable coupon up right now that you can use to save on your next purchase of Green Giant frozen veggies.
Win it! Would you like to win a Seeds of Change prize pack from the folks over at My Blog Spark and Green Giant, just like the one I received? I thought so! :) To enter, tell us what you do in your life to be more Earth friendly. Do you recycle? Have a garden for your veggies? cloth diaper? compost? carpool? Share! :)

I have almost completely changed to reusable tote bags for my grocery shopping - somethings you really need plastic for - and I have recycled since before it was fashionable.
We drink water from the faucet instead of plastic bottles, we also use reusable shopping bags.

We keep any and all appliances unplugged, even the washer when not in use. We also use a clothes line rather than a dryer,
We try to be more earth friendly by having an organic garden without any chemicals, only compost from our kitchen and yard scraps/trimmings.

I recycle paper, cardboard, cans, bottles, plastic bottles, yard waste, leaves. I have a veggie garden, walk a lot. All the usual stuff. But one odd thing: When my dryer died, instead of replacing it I bought a spin dryer. It doesn't heat the clothes, it just spins them (like the spin cycle of the washer but much faster and more efficient. Then I hang them to dry. I can relate to your frugal burnout, but it helps to read your fun blog for inspiration.

We recycle cans, paper and other materials. We grow our own vegetables and we raise organic free range chickens. We also turn of lights and appliances when not in use. We turn off water while brushing our teeth and while soaping up in the shower.
