Sigh. I know it's four years old and time to replace it tech wise, but still, it's not good timing.

Yeah, I would take that as a small hint that something might be wrong.
About a year or so ago, we were watching our 16 year old TV (can you see what's coming) and there was a huge bang and smoke started coming out of the back. It was a sad day.
Smoke came out of it. Man it must be a secret closet smoker or something.
Just kidding, what a drag. Doesn't something like that always happen when you don't have the funds to replace it?
