Review: Bummas

Financially, and just because I am sick of waste, I've been working slowly on using less disposable goods in our life, and more things that are reusable. We already have cut our paper towel use to the very bare minimum (a roll lasts months - well, unless my parents are visiting. Sorry, Mom!), we use cloth napkins, rags whenever possible, etc. But there's a few things we're still working on - one being completely cloth diaper (OK, I hereby promise that #2, whenever lightning strikes, will be completely cloth diapered from day one), and the whole wipes issue.

Actually, I blame DH on the wipes. The guy uses them like crazy. So when I was introduced to Bummas, I fell in love.

Bummas are eco friendly baby sized cloths made by drying baby tushes, as well as blocking surprise geysers. ;) You can also wet them and use one as a reusable wipe, and the other to dry, eliminating the need for baby powder, and cutting down on rashes.

Bummas come in packs of 10 - with different color trimming around the edges. There are four different sets you can buy for the colors: The Wild Ones, The Calm Ones, The Boys and The Girls, so you can choose to match your color schemes or diaper bag, etc. They are a good size - 5" x 7". And boy, are they soft! If you're familiar with some of those cheapie wash cloths, they are so thin and flimsy. (this is what I tried in place of wipes for about one day LOL) Bummas are 100% cotton, and a plush velour terry cloth.

They wash well, though you'll probably have to trim some threads here and there from that edging if you use the dryer. And if you are using it as a reusable wipe, remember to let it soak so the dirty stains come out. (If you are cloth diapering and have a soaking bin already going, just toss them in with those) I suggest buying (or asking) for several sets, especially with a newborn. You'll zip right through the ten in a pack fairly quickly.

Bummas are also proudly made here in the USA - hurray for Bummas! I appreciate American made. At a cost of $16.99 per 10 Bummas, it may seem high at first to some folks, but please remember the reusable aspect of them. You can easily spend $2.50 or more on a package of wipes that may last you a few days. Add up the cost of that, and the Bummas end up being worth the cost, especially if you buy them when your little one is a newborn!

By the way, if you are thinking you are near the end of the diaper phase and can't see yourself using Bummas, I ended up using a green one as a drool rag for one of the dogs (Captain). It was just the right size to have in my pocket when we are walking - he drools a lot when he's out smelling things. (The green color is now his! LOL) So yep, there's a Pet Parent use for these! They also are great for wiping small faces (I would say to use color coding and stick to one set for that purpose even if you are sure you are washing them thoroughly). And if you are one of those super daring folks that use reusable toilet wipes (I'm not that strong!), these would probably be just the right size for that as well I think.
