Free Summer Reading Programs Summer 2010

It's about that time - yes, the time many parents cringe because Summer break is almost here! In search of entertainment for your kids? Try summer reading programs! Besides the obvious fact that they are free ;) - it also encourages kids to read, and not turn into a vegetable over the summer. ;)

As I mentioned awhile back, Barnes & Noble has their program back again this year. Keep track of 8 books your child reads, download the passport form, and they can choose a book of their choice from a list of books for free.

Half Price Book's Feed Your Brain summer reading program begins June 1st and continues through July 31st. One of the reasons I love their program SO much is that children 14 and under receive a $3 Half Price Books gift card EACH WEEK they read at least 15 minutes per day! They can use it towards ANY book in the store (even multiple books if they find ones they like that are 99 cents each!) - and yes, toddlers count too if you are reading to them. If you have a Half Price Books in your area, this is definitely the program to participate in.

Borders will be hosting their Double Dog Dare program. For kids 12 and under, they are "double dog daring" you to read 10 or more books this summer. If you complete the dare, you can bring in this completed printed form to receive a free book of your choice from a selection of titles (including Flat Stanley, Ramona the Brave and others)

If you have a Pottery Barn Kids store near you, call and see if they participate in their Pottery Barn Kids Book Club program. Kids of all ages can participate, and on your first visit, they will receive an "official Book Club Card". Attend five story times, and they will receive a special gift.

And of course, don't forget to visit your local library and sign up for their summer reading program. Participation requirements vary, but often you can get prizes and free books for participating.
