I Can Do Better Than That!
When I saw the article "Time-Saving Foods to Keep in Your Kitchen" up on Yahoo earlier today, I opened it while thinking maybe it might have some new ideas for me to keep on hand here at home.
Pfffft. What a waste of two minutes - it's full of peppered brand naming - Nancy's Petite Quiche: You should keep these amazingly flaky, professional-quality mini pastries in your freezer; many caterers do (Yes, because I have fancy get togethers all. the. time. I've reviewed them, they are great - but time saver? Not really.) and silly things like "Boston Market Frozen Cinnamon Apples" - really, because it's just so hard to dribble some Cinnamon on a freshly cut apple that takes me all of 2 minutes to cut up. There's time saving and there's not worth it time saving.
Alright, the jarred pasta sauce I get, and sure prepped veggies are a definite must. But COME ON! I can write that article up better than they did. Frozen meatballs? Yes. Pre-sliced apples? Yes. Presliced apples with cinnamon? NO!

I actually started making my own pasta sauce last year. My husband has always hated "Italian" food and always pitched a fit when I made spaghetti or lasagna.
Turns out, he really just hated jarred sauce. Now he loves it when I make a batch up, you can smell it outside, and I have to admit it smells divine.
Anyways, it really isn't all that time consuming if you just use a crockpot and just make a huge batch at once. I then portion it into ziploc bags in 1 or 2 cup servings.
Chances are you already have the ingredients in your pantry.
Here is the recipe if you want to give it a try: http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Worlds-Best-Pasta-Sauce/Detail.aspx
I make my own too, and it soooo much better than canned/jarred stuff from the store! I love doing it in my crockpot! :) But I meant overall, I can see how it makes the list for most people.
OK I admit it my family are dorks. They prefer canned sauce and I am talking that stuff in a can! Ewwwwww I love to make my own sauce and simmer it all day in the crock pot. My 15 year old son went through a stage where he refused to eat anything from a crock pot! He missed out on a lot of nummy meals!!!
I love the corn relish my great aunt used to make whenever we would have dinners at her little house in the Alabama country. I would love to taste THIS Aunt's creation. :)
