To be honest, we've kind of switched our grocery habits around in recent months, which means I am buying more at once and taking less trips. This means the car fills up, fast - especially when buying bulkier items such as toilet paper (can't exactly go without that!), diapers, cat litter, etc. Now that I am a Mom too, I not only have to work grocery shopping around my DH's work schedule, but around naptime as well - which can be a royal pain. Add in extra hot weather, rain, or winter slush and snow? Believe me, I'd rather grocery shop in my pj's behind a computer screen! (plus, no nightmare other customers taking 10 minutes to write a check out, rude people pushing their cart into you, etc!)
So I was excited to try out ordering our groceries online from Safeway. I sat there in pjs, in front of my food shelves, and went through the online specials to see what was a good deal vs. what we already had, alongside my menu planning for the next few weeks.
Here's a few things I noticed:
Not all brands are available online. For instance, we purchase Yesterday's News cat litter in the store - it was not available for purchase online. They have plenty of Safeway's store brand available though in many categories, so don't panic if you buy those.
I recommend writing your shopping list out before you get distracted by all the goodies to buy, lol, and stay away from the site when you are hungry, just like when you go shopping in person! It's easy to choose the quantity you need - and yes, you can purchase things like diapers & wipes, cat litter, dog food, etc! I was a little hesitant first at choosing out meat and veggies online - will it be the right weight? Will my fruit not be bruised? Meat not turning green?
It's super easy to understand your cost per unit/pound/whatever, because it's broken down right under the price - I really appreciated this, especially when I have to stick to a grocery budget, It's also easy to take your laptop and sit in front of your pantry (or in your kitchen) to figure out your holes, and menu plan like what I was doing.
There is no bending down, squatting and staring at the bottom shelf trying to find a price. The only lifting you are doing, is putting your groceries away after they have arrived!
Your delivery can be made within a 2 hour time slot that you choose (up to 9 at night!) which is $12.95 or $9.95 (keep reading, for a promo code!), or within a 4 hour time slot which is $6.95. Now you can't use cash or a gift card online, you'll need to use your credit or debit card. (by the way, if you are a Memolink member, sign in first through there to receive a 6,000 point bonus in your Memolink account when you order!) Free shipping can be had from time to time if you spend a certain amount. Also a fair warning: when you buy meats, fish, or veggies by the pound, the price may fluctuate depending on the actual weight of the package chosen for you - this is actually why you have to use a credit/debit card. Be aware that there could be a difference in your final bill depending on what you've ordered. (I saw about a $5 difference in mine)
I ordered from a bunch of different categories - I had everything from cat food, to paper towels (I am set for the year now!), to meat, canned goods, pasta, fruit and vegetables. And I even chose ice cream! Meet my groceries:
Normally I would never have done that on the floor, but I had just mopped the floor. (Do ignore the rawhide one of the dogs just dropped as I told them to get lost and stop drooling so I could hurry and get the picture before my ice cream melted! LOL!!)
The only thing I couldn't get over my fear was ordering eggs - I am paranoid like that. (I'm sure they would have been fine) I will say that the prices online did seem a little higher than in the store on a few items, but it probably goes back to a convenience factor. You can't expect every bargain to be found when it's being delivered.
Now you can use SOME coupons. While you don't have to tie in your Safeway Club Card to have your groceries delivered (by ordering online, you automatically get all the Club prices), you can load ShortCuts and other e-coupons onto your Club Card, and they will take those off on your final bill when it's delivered.
So all in all, I was happy with my ordering process. There has been more than one occasion that my DH's schedule hasn't allowed me to go shopping, and I've run out of eggs or milk - and while you do normally have to spend $100 to $150 at least depending on the promo available to get free shipping, if it's close to a stock up time for us, it probably would be worth it for my family. It's certainly a lot easier than carrying heavy groceries on foot or on a bus with my daughter, and it's also very easy to make sure I don't overspend on groceries.
Now, Safeway's delivery isn't available yet in all areas, so before you get too excited, you may want to check it out first (but hey, it's available in our little ol' town, so maybe yours is too!)
If you'd like to try Safeway's delivery out too, I have an AWESOME promo code for you! You'll not only get free delivery on your order, but you'll get $7 off your order (which is probably close to the total most people who aren't die hard couponers save in coupons each trip, so I think you'll even out!) Use promo code: CNFSPSYHW at checkout to receive the discount.
Win it! Thanks to Safeway, I have a $100 Safeway gift card to giveaway to one lucky reader. To enter, tell us what you think about ordering your groceries online - have you ever done it? Would you? What would you order?

I've never done it but with two toddlers I would love to skip the trip to the store. I would order bread, milk, eggs, ice cream but not produce. I like to pick that out myself.

I've never ordered groceries online before but I would consider doing it.

I have not done it but I think it is a great idea. I do not drive a car and sometimes I cannot buy all I want at once. Would love to use a delivery service for bigger items... like 24 rolls of toilet paper. It looks funny walking down the street with rolls of toiet paper.

like checking dates, looking at produce and all but I have had the need for it to be delivered before and it is great
I haven't. I like going there and making sure my produce is fresh.
I have not done it yet.
There are times I have been tempted. When I am not feeling up to par or because (as happened recently) I couldn't drive for a few days after having surgery.

Since moving to Kent six months ago without a car, I have shopped Safeway on Line. Usually I get two deliveries a month, about $450.00 total. They even deliver prescriptions! Our local Safeway is about 1/2 mile from here and we use the free shuttle service to purchase fresh and frozen on occasion.
This would be a nice feature for older folks who can't or shouldn't be driving anymore.
I've ordered before and loved it. As long as it offers free shipping, I'd be very interested in using home delivery from time to time.

I have ordered groceries online before. I think it is convenient but I am a couponer so I don't get all the good deals I would normally get grocery shopping.
Thanks!
After my daughter was born, I was wishing for something like this. For a new mom, this is a wonderful, wonderful idea. If I become a mom again, I'd order diapers and probably the essentials like bread and milk.

I've never tried it, even when stores around me had special introductory offers for deliveries. I don't know why, but I seem to have a mental block against it. I do kind wish it had been available when my son was little. I hated shopping with him, trying to keep him amused while concentrating on what I was shopping for. I guess I'll just have to get over the fee and see how convenient it is.
cat.naps at yahoo dot com
I get your emails. Not sure what I'd order...The basic staples, canned goods, especially heavy things. I think I'd still rather walk to a store nearby to get produce.
I have never ordered groceries online, but I would try to avoid the crowds in the stores and not having to stand in line.
I have only shopped online once for groceries through Schwaans. I have wanted to use the Safeway online service, but have never gotten around to doing it.

I haven't ordered groceries online, but it sounds like a terrific idea! It would really help, so my hubby could just pick up the groceries on his way home from work! I would probably stock up on essentials - eggs, milk, bread, pasta, etc.

I never have but yes I would consider it. I would be worry about the delivery fee being high. I would get basics bread, paper towels, cheese etc.
I've never ordered groceries online. I guess I thought it would be way to expensive. I can see where it would come in handy at times, but I actually enjoy going shopping BY MYSELF and wandering up and down the aisles. Now if they would just put it all away for you too they would have me sold!
I have never done it. Maybe non-perishables (that aren't too heavy).
I actually use Safeway's delivery for items I purchase for our office. It's super-easy and they automattically give you the card discount price when you order online.
I don't think I'd use it for home though (unless there was an emergency or something) because I'm such a couponer!

I've never ordered groceries online...I'm one of those weird people who LIKES going to the store! But I have friends who have and once I was at their store when the delivery arrived, and it seemed to me to be very convenient and time-saving! A couple of years ago, upon release from the hospital, I was prohibited from driving for a couple of weeks. I used Von's (a Safeway store) home delivery and it was so great. Service was efficient and I even got good quality produce without picking it out myself.
I haven't tried it yet because my Safeway is super close to home anyway. I like to shop in store because I don't always stick strictly to a list and I like to look around the store to get ideas for meal planning. But I do think it sounds like a great idea and I may just try it sometime when I know exactly what I want ahead of time. Do you tip the delivery person? I've always heard that people did that back in the day when local markets delivered to customers. I have no idea if that has changed or not.
I've tried it, but wasn't very happy. Some things I really needed were left out because my particular choices (like quantity) weren't available, and my bag of granulated sugar was punctured, which made a big, big mess in my kitchen. But I won't pretned it wasn't fabulous having someone carry the heavy stuff up my stairs for me.
I've done it before, back when Safeway's online coupons stacked ridiculously well. If I used it again, it would probably be for produce or meat: things I can't use manufacturer coupons for anyway.
I've never ordered groceries online. I might do it if I were desperate for time, but I like shopping through the store myself.

I would order certain groceries online. It would be canned items and boxed items like cereal, pasta, etc. . . I would want to pick out my own fresh vegetables, yogurt and dairy products.
The option of ordering on line most staples sounds great and Safeway has great selections. I love their bagels and their floral department, my one indulgence!
I would love to order groceries online. I've done it at Sam's Club - and then you just stop in and pick up the order. It takes the stress off for me, since I hate shopping.

I've never ordered groceries online. I'd start with just boxed items to test it out. I agree that eggs would scare me!
I havent ordered groceries online but I love the idea of it, & would probably try it. I'd get main staples and snacks and boxed dry goods

I haven't tried shopping online for groceries yet. But with 6 kids, I really like the convenience idea of it.

I would love ordering groceries online, the only problem is I'm way too picky for some things! I could order things that were canned and frozen but I doubt I could let them choose my meat and fruits or veggies! I have never ordered online but they just started doing it in our area a short while ago...

I have ordered a few odd things online that I couldn't find locally, but that's it. I think I want to select my own products at the store.
I have never done it,however I am not opposed to it.I would order whatever i need at the time!

I have ordered groceries online before, and think it's a great idea!
I've never ordered groceries online before, but I'd consider it since it'll save me a lot of time. I'd probably order milk, OJ, bread, and cereal.

i think ordering groceries online is a good thing. i would do it in the future, i have not yet; and i would order family staples like cereal and breakfast items.
I ordered online before when I lived in Viginia. It was nice because you just sit at you computer order what you want and someone brings your groceries to your door. I wish every store did this

I've never tried online ordering, save for buying a few items from the grocery store on Amazon.com. I love the sheer convenience of it - especially when I'm having a hectic day/week and need to fill the fridge and cupboards. I don't think I'd ever completely give up going to the store, though - I love bargain hunting and raiding the clearance bins, and I also prefer to pick out my own produce in store. Thanks for the giveaway!

I have ordered groceries online, and I'll stock up using it, especially on produce (they seem to pick really good produce for you)

I've never ordered groceries online. I love ordering things online but I don't know how it works! If I ever did I would start with non-perishables.
