ARGH ARGH ARGH!!!
So that area of the floor in the bedroom was apparently A LOT worse than what we had thought - it's actually about a foot wide by about 5 foot long. We're going to have to replace the entire flooring in the bedroom because there are other very weak spots, and I am so irritated right now. It's the start of the rainy season which makes just about an remodeling project a royal pain. We ended up having to move the bed in such a weird place that it's going to be super annoying getting in and out... and to make matter worse, when we moved the bed, we broke part of the bed frame! And apparently the water damage from the air conditioner was worse than we thought, because there's water damage on the bookshelf that was on the other side of the bed!
Geez, can't we catch a break? I really don't even want to mess with this project. I'd rather cut our losses, try to find some land, and just throw up a couple of tents, and work on building a house ourselves. DH cringes at that thought - I don't know what scares him more, no running water, or no electricity for his beloved gaming systems! LOL!
Let our plight be a learning lesson to all: the money you spend on a the inspections before purchasing a house are worth every penny! Do not go without it, and don't think you're cut out to fix a house that needs completely overhauled by yourself if you've never fixed a house before. Just because they can do it on TV in less than three weeks, does not mean you can!

I am really sorry to hear about this. I assume that you will have to replace the sub floor, but do you think you will have to replace the support beams as well? I wish there was something I could do to help, but I have very little knowledge when it comes to construction; I am more of a maintenance person.
Did the A/C cause all this damage?
Sorry to hear things are going badly, I had a little giggle over the bit about buying some land and rebuilding from scratch though. I know a couple ladies who did that, bought a piece of land and lived in a tent while they built the house. They did it sort of little bits at a time, when they had the money to buy the supplies (did most of the work themselves). It was kind of funny how excited they were when they finished the bathroom. :-)
Amen to that. We just went through that with a bathroom renovation on a house that we rent. My husband did it ALL and it took two weeks. My landlord kept complaining that it was taking too long but the entire room had to be stripped down to the studs and the exterior wall of the house had to come down because of the damage. It was a nightmare. I both love and hate those shows that make it look easy because it is anything but!
I am really sorry about the problems. They just seem to escalate. One fixed here is another. When working on a do it yourself fix up house You have to watch out it doesn't cost you more to do it yourself than to hire someone. Also whoever is doing it really wants to or it won't work. Good luck with fixing your problems.
I'm hoping the support beams are OK - that seems to be the safe spots to walk right now. The floor already had some weaker spots, but the AC way accelerated the damage because it leaked for a couple of weeks until we figured it out. :(
Ruth: We lived in the car for awhile after we were married, I was so excited when we got the apartment and I had running hot water! I'll be the same way if we build when the bathroom is completed! LOL
Stacey: Your landlord is evil. lol Gosh, I hope the walls wouldn't have to come down here, it would take DH FOREVER! He's not the fastest DIY-er, that's for sure. lol
Grampy: I'm so frugal when it comes to repairs I hate the thought of paying someone else to do it, lol :)
We skimped on our housing inspection, thinking that it was a great money-saving plan. It turned out we have an infestation that will cost more to fix than the inspection would have. And if we had caught it before buying, they would have been forced to lower the price. Live and learn: sorry to hear a similar thing happened to you.
