DVD Review & Giveaway: Wonders of the Solar System

My family and I recently received a copy of the BBC production, Wonders of the Solar System on Blu-Ray to review.

Wonders of the Solar System is an AMAZING two disc set (or three on regular DVD) and hosted by physicist Dr. Brian Cox (who happens to have made People magazine's Sexiest Men list). Dr. Cox visits different areas of the world and talks about how they relate to the sun, using photographs taken from satellites, telescopes, and rovers/probes sent into space, mixed with some really great CGI. Some of the areas Dr. Cox visits throughout our planet will simply take your breath away, and if you don't walk away from watching this series without adding to your "Bucket List", well, I don't know what to say.

Wonders of the Solar System is what your HDTV was meant to show you. If you have a bigger screen TV, you can't help but look at it in absolute AWE as Dr. Cox is explaining things that we know now about our incredible universe - and you'll see the awe on Dr. Cox's face as well as he visits areas to show us the relation. There is so much information you can learn watching this series! I highly recommend it for my homeschooling families, families who enjoy learning together, and of course, teachers too. While this set is also available on DVD, if you have the Blu-Ray capabilities, I honestly think it's worth the slightly higher cost of the Blu-Ray set just to sit back and enjoy the incredible view you'll see on your TV Screen.

I'm betting your kids will be begging for a telescope of their own if you don't already own one after watching this series. It's now on our wish list!

The set also includes special features: two Horizon episodes "What on Earth is Wrong With Gravity?" and "Do You Know What Time It Is?" - both also hosted by Dr. Cox. They are both full length episodes, and you'll see and learn more of the same incredibleness as the previous episodes on the discs.

Wonders of the Solar System is available on Tuesday, September 7th, 2010 on DVD for a suggested retail price of $39.98, and Blu-Ray for a suggested retail price of $49.98. (Amazon has the Blu-Ray for just $24.49 on pre-order right now!) The total running time (not including special features which are 109 minutes long) is 293 minutes long. The set is not rated, but it's safe for all ages as there are no bad words, violence, etc.

Win it! I have one set on regular DVD of Wonders of the Solar System to give away to one lucky reader! To enter, tell us what fascinates you about our beautiful planet Earth or the solar system.

What I love is that we are but a "pale blue dot" in the cosmos, which is vaster than vast.

It is mind-boggling to try and conceptualize the vastness of space. Earth is just one tiny speck in the cosmos. Our scientists have discovered some amazing things, but just think how many more wondrous things remain as yet undetected. Thank you for the chance to win.

One of the things that fascinates me about our solar system and other star systems, at least this was the knowledge when I took astronomy in the last century, was that all systems seem to follow the same rule for where the planets fall, how far they are from the sun and each other. I can't remember the name of the rule. According to the rule, we should have a fourth planet right where the asteroid belt is. Interesting, huh?
