Christmas With The Backyardigans features four new to DVD episodes: "The Action Elves Save Christmas", "Pablo and the Acorns", "The Big Dipper Diner", and "The Amazing Splashinis". In "The Action Elves Save Christmas", there's a Christmas Eve emergency - Santa's magic sack has disappeared! In the nick of time, the Action Elves (Tasha, Pablo, and Uniqua) step up to find it, but they must get past the Abominal Brothers - can they do it?
If you're new to The Backyardigans, this animated series features five neighbors - Tasha, Tyrone, Pablo, Uniqua, and Austin - who meet in their backyards, and each episode has a different music theme. You'll hear Memphis Soul, Society Band, Hootenanny, and Balaliaka Orchestra on this DVD. And if you're going what on earth is Hootenanny? Fear not, because I was too when I read the original press release about it. LOL The super nifty part is that they actually choreograph real movements and then recreate them in animation for this show.
This is another one where really only one part of the DVD is holiday related. The remaining three episodes really don't have anything to do with Christmas - you've got an alien, sea monster, and space race between evil space dictators going on in the other episodes. (That would be the "Pablo and the Acorns" episode, which is hilarious even to me as a Mom) So really, if you buy this DVD as a stocking stuff or to bring on the holiday spirit, you'll get more value out of it because outside of the one episode, it's really watchable all year round.
Christmas With The Backyardigans also contains a couple of special features - a music video: "I Love Snow (Remix), and a fun little matching gift game that kids can play with the remote. (Or I suppose the mouse if you load the DVD on the computer?)
The Backyardigans: Christmas With The Backyardigans is out today, October 5th, 2010. Full screen edition, it's not rated (safe for all ages, but geared towards the preschool 2-5 crowd). Total running time is 95 minutes (not including special features. The suggested retail price is $16.99, but Amazon has it as of this posting for $12.99.
I received a copy of this DVD in order to view and share my family's opinions of it. And yes: I am starting to feel like I should be pulling out all the holiday decorations and start decorating! LOL
