Oceans is narrated by actor Pierce Brosnan. (I admit normally I am not a fan of Mr. Brosnan, as he creeps me out for some reason - however, his voice is absolutely perfect for this underwater adventure.) You'll learn about the leafy sea dragon - try to move him and he'll die. Or if sea lions, leopard seals, and polar bears intrigue you, you'll see them on this documentary too, when you'll even visit the North Pole and Antarctica. There are ugly creatures, and beautiful ones. The footage they have managed to take is incredible.
"Human indifference is surely the ocean's greatest threat," it is said on this show, and I will admit it was rather shocking to see satellite pollution photos and footage of our oceans. There is a scene towards the end where you see a sea lion trying to figure out what a shopping cart is doing on the bottom of the ocean. If anything, I think my little family came away from watching this realizing we need to be even more careful than we already are with our consumption habits.
Oceans is a two disc set featuring both the Blu-Ray edition and the standard DVD feature film, so you if you don't have a Blu-Ray player as of yet, you won't have to re-purchase this title down the road. It also works great for computers, portable DVD players, etc that may not be Blu-Ray capable.
The film itself is absolutely GORGEOUS on Blu-Ray. I was amazed at the colors, the beautiful sea creatures - you'll feel like you are visiting an aquarium or really there yourself. (Ah technology, how we love thee!)
Oceans does contain some special features. Loading the Blu-Ray disc onto your internet hooked up Blu-Ray or PS3, you'll be treated to the current time, temperature and weather conditions at the bottom of your screen - as well as tidbits about the oceans around us on the Living Menus feature. (This is super neat!!) You can also watch the film with the filmmaker annotations about how they were creating it. The regular DVD doesn't contain those options, but it includes some of the other features that are included on both discs - "Make A Wave" music video from Disney's Friends For Change that have tween stars Joe Jonas and Demi Lovato, as well as a feature on Disney & Nature: Preserving The World We Share. It also contain a bonus video called "Deeper In the Ocean", which shows even more ocean footage and more creatures.
Now while this DVD is rated G, it does contain nature themed violence - orcas eating sea lions, birds eating baby sea turtles. If you are viewing this with young children, do be prepared to explain the circle of life to them.
By the way, if you are looking for some printable activity sheets to tie into viewing this DVD with your children, there are a few available. And if you purchase Oceans between October 19th and 25th, Disneynature, through the Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund, will help establish new marine protected areas in The Bahamas with The Nature Conservancy, one of the largest conservation organizations in the world.
Oceans will be available on Blu-Ray and standard DVD on October 19th, 2010. It is rated G, but use your discretion. The total running time, not including bonus features, is 84 minutes long. The suggested retail price is $39.99, but Amazon has it available for $24.99 as of this posting.
I received a copy of this DVD in order to share my thoughts. All opinions are mine.
