DVD Review: Dora's Christmas Carol Adventure (2010)

I'm kicking off Confessions of a Psychotic Housewife's annual Holiday Gift Idea Guide with someone who will definitely be making multiple appearances in our home this holiday season! LOL My family and I recently received a copy of the new animated Dora the Explorer DVD, Dora's Christmas Carol Adventure.

No, you're not losing your mind. This DVD was originally released last Fall, but it's been re-released with a new paper cover, and a few extra minutes (about six) on the DVD. The cover has this super cute Advent calender on the inside featuring all of Dora's friends and everything she needs for her Nochebuena party. (If you buy this DVD early, you may want to hide the cover until December 1st!)

Dora's Christmas Carol Adventure itself is a holiday special featuring that's taken a parallel to Charles Dicken's A Christmas Carol: Swiper the fox tries to steal the Christmas Star from the Nochebuena Party (that would be Christmas Eve, if you didn't already guess), gets busted, and lands on Santa's naughty list. Now Dora must help Swiper get back on the nice list, and they journey to the past, present, and future to learn the true meaning of the Christmas spirit.

I seriously love this special because of the "time travel" - it's the only time they've ever done this, and it's a great tie-in to one of the most loved holiday stories ever! I also enjoy that they teach kids that they need to be nice and pay it forward with good deeds in order to stay on Santa's "good list" - bring on the karma.

Dora's Christmas Carol Adventure contains some of the same special features: the music videos "Jingle Bells" and "We Wish You A Merry Christmas", as well as a new behind the scenes short little featurette of the Young People's Chorus.

Now from a budget minded Mom's point of view, unless you have super obsessed Dora fans who have to have EVERYTHING Dora - if you already own the Dora's Christmas Carol Adventure that came out last Fall, I'm not sure you'll have to rush out and pick up the 2010 version as well. Sure, the Advent calender is absolutely adorable, and hey, even I'm excited to see each day opened this year, as Advent calenders as a big tradition in my family - but the difference in footage probably won't be noticeable to your preschooler. Now, if you're new to this movie - then get thee to the store and pick it up! (Or beg, borrow from the library, etc) It's really a fun DVD to have on hand to kick off the holidays - plus, your kids can pick up a few Spanish words in the process.

Dora's Christmas Carol Adventure will be available Tuesday, October 5th, 2010. The total running time (not including bonus features) is 52 minutes long. Full screen edition, it's not rated, and safe for all ages - though geared at the 2-5 crowd. The suggested retail price is $19.99, but stalk the stores, and I'm sure you'll find it a little bit cheaper.

Nickelodeon is also releasing some tie-in products with this movie, by the way, featuring a book, and gift tags, wrapping paper, etc to help you package up your Dora goodies! There is also a musical CD being released, Dora's Christmas. It contains 16 holiday tracks in total, including bonus tracks from Dora's Christmas Carol Adventure. Included on the CD is a bonus activity game - plus with the disc in your CD drive on the computer, you'll be easily connected to more activities. (Unless you're a glutton for punishment, you may want to hide the CD until the Christmas season actually kicks off - learn from my mistake. LOL!) It is a great little holiday CD for the small ones. It's being released simultaneously, and the suggested retail price is $11.98.

I received a copy of this DVD and CD in order to review and share my thoughts.
