DVD Review: Merry Christmas, Olivia

My family and I recently received a copy of the new DVD, Merry Christmas, Olivia! to review.

Merry Christmas, Olivia is the latest title to be released on DVD based on the popular children's book series written by Ian Falconer. Like the books, you'll see Olivia's spunkiness and the fact that she can do anything she puts her mind to do, a great message for kids.

The title of this DVD may make you think that all the episodes on the DVD are Christmas and holiday related, when in fact only the first set of episodes are. There are some winter themes going on in other episodes, but the rest are your usual Olivia stories that could be on any DVD, really. Here is the episode list: "Olivia Claus", "Olivia and the Family Photo"; "Olivia's Ice Spectacular", "Olivia's Snow Day"; "Olivia Makes A Wedding Gift", "Olivia Makes Magic", and "Olivia and the Babies", "Olivia's Good Luck".

In "Olivia Claus", Olivia has lost her favorite toy in the world, her monkey named Mathilda. This ramps up her imagination, and she imagines herself to be the Santa Claus of lost toys, returning them to their rightful owner. On Christmas morning, guess what? Mathilda was right THERE all along. (Isn't that the story of all our lives? LOL)

Merry Christmas, Olivia also contained one extra half episode in the form of a bonus feature: "Olivia's Pirate Treasure", which trust me, is as fun as it sounds! It's not overly holiday themed, so it's a DVD that will be played all year round over here. Plus, I'll take an excuse to pull out the Olivia books and read them alongside the DVDs.

Merry Christmas, Olivia is out today, October 5th, 2010. It's full screen edition, and not rated - but meant for the preschool crowd with no violence/questionable moments of course. The total running time is 95 minutes long, and it's definitely a worthy pick for a stocking stuffer. The suggested retail price is $16.99, but Amazon has it for $12.99 as of this posting.

I received a copy of this DVD in order to view and share my family's opinion.
