Did you know that Frito-Lay was the first major food company to remove partially hydrogenated oils from their cooking oil back in 2003? Their chips have 0 grams of trans fat because of this. And a 1 ounce serving of Lay's Classic Potato chips contains the same amount of sodium as a slice of white bread.
Of course, the key to that one is only consuming one ounce! To help keep your portions in control, never snack with the whole bag - you'll almost always eat more than you intended to. (it's not your fault, it's so easy to get distracted watching a movie or playing games!) Instead, portion out the chips into a bowl or on a plate. When it's gone, it's gone!
Here's some other interesting facts from Frito-Lay:
*Frito-Lay supports American farmers and buys the potatoes used to make potato chips from over 80 farms across 27 states.
*They use renewable energy like solar power and biomass boilers in some of their plants. (I'd love to hear that it's used in ALL of them one day - anyone else feel that way? Wouldn't that be rockin' if ALL manufacturing plants everywhere did that?)
*Their manufacturing plants are also taking measure to divert at least 99% of waste from our landfills. They are reusing shipping cartons up to six times before recycling them, which helps saves trees too while reducing cardboard waste.
(Remember my TerraCycle post awhile back? They are helping reduce chip waste too once we're done eating them, by recycling those Frito-Lay chips bags into products like FritoLay wrapper totes! You can sign up to help by saving and sending in your chip bags!)
Frito-Lay sent us over a great fan pack, that had a bag of their Tostios Scoops! (which are made with whole grain), Lay's Lightly Salted Original Chips, Sun Chips Original, a tote bag, chip clip, reuseable water bottle, and a coupon for our next purchase:
I was super happy to see that the Sun Chips bag was the compostable one. I happily crumpled it and made lots of noise. (Click this link to see my rant the other day, lol) In fact, when we are done eating this bag, I plan to compost it myself in one of my planters over the winter to see how it ends up looking - come Spring, I'll show you how it's done. I don't mind a little noise when opening the bag to help our beautiful planet!
Thank you Frito-Lay! :)
I received the items above as a thank you for being a Frito-Lay fan. I was under no obligation to blog about this - I wanted to share some of the interesting facts I learned about the company - all opinions are mine, and not of Frito-Lay.
