Thrifty Thursday - Repair Don't Replace

This week for my Thrifty Thursday post, I'm talking about repairing, not replacing.

Sometimes, things break down, or fall apart - and while your first thought may be to immediately start scouring for deals to replace it, sometimes it is actually cheaper to have that product replaced!

Often when a vacuum cleaner for instance starts to loose it's suction, we immediately think it's doomed to die. However, it could be something so simple as it needs a filter change. Did you know your vacuum filter needs changed out at least once a year? The difference in switching them out can be amazing - and not only are you saving money, as a filter usually costs under $20, but you are helping to keep clutter out of the landfill.

The same thing goes for many of our garments. These days, a lot of people can't even sew a simple button on a shirt and throw it away instead! If you absolutely cannot sew, take the garment down to your local dry cleaner - many will fix buttons for a small fee. The same goes for zippers. Years ago, I had a pair of design jeans where the zipper was broken. For less than $10, I had the zipper replaced - a lot cheaper than spending another $75 on a new pair of jeans. (What can I say, I really loved those jeans! lol)

Shoes can be resoled as well. I had a pair of beloved Doc Martens boots resoled after a few years of daily wearing for under $25 - again, a lot less than the original $125 price tag. I got another five years or so worth of wear out those boots, and kept them out of a landfill.

Very true. With our vacuum we got a filter that never has to be replaced just washed once a year. We also have all kinds of glues for when the baby gets too rough on our furniture and kitchen utensels hehe.

my hubby used to collect vacuumns that people tossed in the trash. He would usually just have to unclog them in the hose. He would then turn around and sell them to people. It was shocking how often vacuums are tossed and they are just clogged!
