The Canadian Tenors, for those who have not heard of them before, are a foursome of yep, you guessed it - Canadian guys: Victor Micallef, Clifton Murray, Remigio Pereira, and Fraser Walters. They are a blend of classical and contemporary pop. They are more well known in Canada, of course, but they are starting to make their way into the US, and have even performed on Oprah.
The Perfect Gift was released on October 12th through Decca Records and includes a duet with Grammy Award winner, Sarah McLachlan. Here's the complete track listing:
1. "O Holy Night"
2. "Instrument Of Peace"
3. "Silent Night"
4. "The Prayer"
5. "Wintersong (duet with Sarah McLachlan)
6. "Huron Carol"
7. "The Perfect Gift" (Album Version)
8. "Ave Maria"
9. "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen"
10. "O Viens Emmanuel" (O Come Emmanuel)
11. "What Child Is This?" (Carol Of The Bells)
12. "Hallelujah" (Bonus Track)
And yes, you probably just spotted that the bonus track listed just happens to be one of my favorite songs. The Canadian Tenors do a wonderful job on their version of "Hallelujah", with even a hint of Celtic to this beautiful song. "O Holy Night" is another wonderful one, as is "Ave Maria" - which isn't a very easy song to sing. Their take on the songs included on this CD are beautiful. The only song I was so-so on, surprisingly, was the duet with Sarah McLachlan. For some reason, I just didn't enjoy their voices together. I think it was just two different worlds colliding.
If you are looking for a new spin on your carols but that are still a classical style, do give The Perfect Gift a listen. It's a lovely way to bring in this holiday season. If you are interested in catching The Canadian Tenors live, they will embark on a 14-city tour, including shows in New York, LA, Chicago and will be making stops in Europe and Asia. Check their website to see if they will be coming near you!
