For Once, The Dogs Win
I feel badly for all parties involved, but I'm glad to see that cooler heads prevailed on this one.
Several weeks ago, a 10 year old boy trespassed onto a homeowners property to retrieve his ball that had gone over the fence, and was bitten by the homeowner's three large dogs. The kid really got it - I'm sure he's not only going to have physical scars for life, but a good set of emotional ones.
I know some of you are screaming that the dogs should have been put down, and I'm just happy because I'm an animal lover. Not so fast, let's be fair here:
The fence the kid climbed over was six feet tall. There were "No Trespassing" and "Beware of Dog" signs on the fence. The kid lived nearby, it's not like he didn't hear the dogs bark - and at 10, I'm sure he could read the signs. (If he can't... seriously, he shouldn't be unsupervised).
The licensed dogs were quarantined for 10 days as required by law to ensure that they were disease free and were returned to their owner last week.
Now speaking as someone who also has a six foot fence around her yard, as well as multiple "No trespassing" signs of her own up, and a "Dog on Premises" sign (the insurance company warned us that the Beware version could lead to a court case if anything did happen) - they are up because your feet better not be in my yard. We've had lost balls end up in our yard before, and the kids know to ask - once they even sat on the steps for an hour, poor kids, waiting for us to get home - so why couldn't this kid just knock on the door and ask too? Parenting FAIL.

And that is the problem with our society--it's always the other guys fault. Ugh. Glad the dogs prevailed in this situation.
Nope. I'm with you. People need to teach their children to respect other people's property and not climb the six foot fence with the Dog signs on it. You can't blame the dog(s) for guarding the property.
I am with you too! The reason I have a dog and a fence is so people don't come in. When did we loose our right to limit who comes on our property. Sadly my dog would probably not bite but run for a toy for the intruder to throw. Or run around with the ball.
Yeah, it wasn't the poor dogs fault! If that happened with my dogs I would be livid and press charges for trespassing.
Good for the dogs, I have two myself and I agree, when the sign says Keep OUT, keep out....hopefully, the boy will be ok and perhaps even learn a lesson....poor dogs were probably so scared for those 10 long days but they are finally back home. Hope Santa brings them a big fat bone for Christmas.
Happy Holidays,
Donna

I feel bad for the young man. But he should not have climbed the fence. The dogs were only protecting their property.
