Review & Giveaway: Accutire Setpoint Tire Gauge

One of the simplest ways you can ensure you are getting the best bang for your gasoline money is to make sure your tires are inflated to the correct pressure. Too little, and your gasoline usage is inefficient. Too high, and not only do you run the risk of blowing a tire out - a costly experience, for sure! - but you're still wasting gasoline. Having an older car, I can always tell if my husband hasn't checked the tire pressure recently - we definitely use more gasoline. Let's say it adds up to about $5 extra a month if he hasn't checked it recently - that's a savings of $60 a year for spending 2-3 minutes to check the tire's pressure! Most gas stations will give you free air for your tires if you purchase gasoline from their store, so you really have no excuse not to take good care of your tire's pressure.

If you didn't already know, the proper tire pressure for your vehicle is usually found on a sticker in the driver's side door jamb or the glove box and in your owner's manual. What's marked on the tire isn't usually the same amount as what you'll find on that sticker (since it's not car model specific!), so be sure to go by what that sticker or your manual says, and not what the tires say. If it is hot weather, remember to check the pressure early in the morning when it is cooler.

I recently received the Accutire Setpoint Tire Gauge to review. It's completely programmable, and it remembers the recommended pressure for both your front and rear tires, which can vary on certain makes of vehicles. The nifty part is that it contains a white LED flashlight, so you can see what you're doing. If you are having problems with your tires and it's after dusk or late at night, this could really come in handy. It also has a blue backlit display so you can easily read the results even in brighter lights.


Now, since I don't drive, the tires are all my DH's department - well, with my nagging to remind him to check them. ;) I had previously bought him a manual tire gauge way back when we purchased this car (I thought it was a cool one, it even had a skull on it!), but he thought it was a pain to use. He says this one is much, much easier because of the screen. It does use batteries, two of those round lithium batteries, but they are replaceable should they run out. It looks a little bulky at first (well, compared to that little manual pen like one we had), but it has a rubber grip, so it fits easily into his hand. Amazon has it for $10.00 as of this posting, and it seems like an alright price to me since it is digital. (I think I paid $3-4 for that manual one back then)
