Recipe: Fancy Schmancy Pasta

So I have no catchy name for this one. Storm's Pasta Delight? LOL! Make this, and you'll never pay $10 for a plate of pasta again. ;)

I usually make it with diced tomatoes and fresh sauteed mushrooms, but I had an expensive pasta sauce that was at it's use it or loose it date, so the photos show that instead. It's better with the fresh stuff, but obviously you can skip a few steps and head for the jarred sauce for time constraints.

Yes, I know the calories are killer - but trust me, an extra walk or date with the Wii Fit is SO worth it! :)

zucchini, thinly sliced
mushrooms, 8 oz
1 can diced tomatoes (preferably with the basil already added, or just add some basil. if tomatoes are in season, feel free to dice your own!!)
1 pound ground chicken
1 pound fancy pasta of choice
3 tablespoons butter
1 cup shredded Romano cheese

Saute the fresh zucchini and mushrooms in a good drizzle of olive oil, and when the mushrooms are looking half way done, add in the tomatoes.

Brown the ground chicken well, and drain all the fat.

Cook the pasta, then drain. Add the butter, and let it melt, coating the pasta. Follow with the Romano cheese, and mix well.

Serve, adding the zucchini, mushrooms and tomatoes on top of the pasta.

By the way, it seems expensive, but with everything bought on sale, it shouldn't cost more than $10 for 4 servings - mine usually costs about $5.

DVD Review & Giveaway: Where's Spot? And Other Stories

My family and I recently received a copy of Where's Spot? And Other Stories on DVD to review.

Break out the nostalgia my fellow parents, Where's Spot? And Other Stories is the 30th anniversary edition, based on the popular book series of the same name. (I really feel old!) It features six story episodes: "Where's Spot?", "Spot's Lost Bone", "Spot at the Playground", "spot Goes to the Park", "Spot Finds A Key", and "Spot Goes Splash!". Each episode has it's own song too. I recommend watching the movies AFTER you've read the books with your children. The DVD actually does have subtitles for the hearing impaired - so consider turning the volume down and reading with your kids, or having the books nearby so the kids can find the words on the screen in the books, and learn to read along. (I don't believe they are all word for word, but it does help teach word recognition and beginning reading skills)

Where's Spot? And Other Stories is also full of special features, including author Eric Hill reading the original Where's Spot? book and three bonus episodes - "Spot's Bath", "Spot's Umbrella", and "Spot's Treehouse". It also contains the Spot's Shapes and Colors Game.

Where's Spot? And Other Stories is full screen edition, and runs just 30 minutes long in total (about 5 minutes per episode, not including special features), so it makes for a good, short TV reward, or perfect to keep TV viewing at a minimum. The DVD is not rated - it's perfect for the preschool age up to age 4, after that, they may be bored extremely quickly. The suggested retail price is just $9.99 (Amazon has it for $9.98)

Win it! I have one copy of Where's Spot? And Other Stories on DVD for one lucky reader and their family! To enter, tell us your favorite must-have toddler book to read aloud to your kiddos.

As always, if you have completed the first entry above, you can also receive extra entries for:

-Subscribing to my feed OR following my blog
-Blogging about this giveaway with a link back
-Tweeting about this giveaway (leave the link or include @psychotichouse)

That's up to four (4) possible entries! Giveaway ends May 15th, 2010 at 11:59 PST. US Only, sorry, and if you have won any of my DVD giveaways in the last 3 months, please let someone else have a chance. Please leave your email address in your comment, or have it available in your profile so I can contact you if you've won. Winners drawn via Random.org.

I received a copy of the DVD above to write a review. All links included are for your convenience - they are not referral links. One reader will win the prize mentioned above.

Thrifty Thursday - Save On Freezing Meats

This week for my Thrifty Thursday post, I'm talking about saving on your meat purchases.

There are several ways to keep your costs down when you are a meat loving family. Of course, the easiest way is to always purchase your meats on sale, and plan your meals around the sales.

The larger "family packs" are usually the best deals to be had per pound, but unless you are a large family, you'll need to portion that meat out. Never freeze a large package of meat unless you're actually going to use all that meat in one meal setting - once it's defrosted, you have to use it right away. The easiest way: purchase good quality, freezer specific plastic bags and be sure to get all the air out of the bag before placing it in the freezer.

If you buy a lot of meat, a FoodSaver may be handy for you, just remember the cost of the plastic bags and electricity to run it, of course. The great part is of course that they suck all the air out, so you can generally store the meat longer than with just a standard bag.

Many stores also have a section of meats that are marked down because they are near the sell-by date. We purchase a lot of our meats that way our self. Remember that freezing your meats will not kill any bacteria and germs in the meat, and if the meat is already going bad, it will continue to go bad as it thaws back out. Be careful which packages of meat you choose.

The USDA has some great information about freezing food on their website, including a chart for how long you can safely freeze meats.

I Feel Like Rip Van Winkle Here...

Seriously! I came home yesterday and totally crashed until like 10 PM - then I lasted long enough to make us all dinner and check a few emails, before I crashed again - and I just woke up at 11! Eeek!

DH is laughing at me. At least it was his day off, but now I made us a little late for our hiking expedition here in a few.

Be back later with posts - I wasn't ignoring the blog, promise! :)

I Rarely Get Political Here...

Speaking as a first generation American, and someone who doesn't quite fit the average profile box, the new immigration law in Arizona makes me a tad bit nervous.

Oh, don't get me wrong - I'm ALL for a big crackdown on illegal immigration. Totally. What makes me nervous is that now police can randomly stop you in AZ and ask you for your proof of citizenship.

Obviously, it's not like I don't have that proof - in fact, for years I never left home without my passport - it's the racial profiling that bothers me.

Yes, I said it. Racial profiling.

Right after 9/11, my life was absolutely MISERABLE when flying. Once from from NYC to Chicago I was checked and rechecked, and checked and rechecked again. I never was felt up so much, and I didn't even get a drink out of it. Pfffttt!

If you're stopped by doing anything illegal - and we're not talking made up illegal - then yes, you should be forced to show citizenship. Applying for state aid? Show it. Applying for a job? You betcha! Opening a bank account? Yep, or show that visa.

But just because someone thinks you look like you could be illegal, doesn't mean that you are - and who's to say annoying neighbors won't call the police and say you are illegal just to harass you?

Something needs to be done - I'm just not sure this is it.

Random Thoughts Tuesday - Nathan Fillion Is Growing On Me

randomtuesday

I loved Firefly - I'm sure you guessed that by my taste. lol So we decided to check out Castle Season 1 from the library since Nathan is in it. I probably don't have to tell you that DH can't wait to play laser tag with our daughter like that, LOL Men and their toys. I was so-so on Castle though - the only reason I sat through it was I liked Nathan's character. (Next up is Fringe Season 1.)

Actually, I always tell my DH I'd gleefully leave him for Adam Baldwin, who was also in Firefly. ;)

Half of you reading this probably have no idea who on earth I am talking about. Sorry! This man right here:

Complete with gun in his hand! *swoon*

DH always tells me he'd leave me for Gina Torres, who was also on Firefly.

See a pattern here? LOL

*yawn* It's killing me today - one minute there's sun, then it's suddenly raining, then there's sun AND rain together - make up your mind Mother Earth!

DH didn't even make it home last night before they called looking for him *grumbles* My pizza ended up all messed up too because of it. At least it was still edible, because I didn't have enough flour left to make another one. I'm going to need a Costco run!

I have the worst craving for garlic bread right now.

It's prime time corgi molting season right now - I swiffer and 2 minutes later it looks like I haven't done a thing!

I think a nap is deserved today! Who's with me?

DVD Review & Giveaway: Merlin: The Complete First Season

There is no right or wrong, only what is, and what isn't... None of us can choose our destiny Merlin, and none of us can escape it.

Being the medieval freak that I am, I love anything that has to do with King Arthur and Camelot. I was SO excited when I got the chance to receive Merlin: The Complete First Season, the BBC series that aired on NBC, to review.

Take all the tales that you know of Camelot and throw it out the door. In Merlin, all magic is illegal and punishable by death - just like it really was in the dark ages. King Arthur is well, an arrogant SOB that looks like a California surf boy, Guinevere isn't exactly the royal queen we know from the tales yet - she's actually Morgana's servant, Lancelet is still a peasant, and Merlin, is most definitely NOT the greatest Warlock in all the lands - he has a long way to go with his magic. All these characters are still in their teens in this series. There is a CGI dragon to bring us the dragons as well - but don't look for the dragon to be a main part of the series.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer fans will recognize Anthony Head (who played Giles) in this series as King Uther, and John Hurt from Hellboy, but that's it for recognizable faces for most of us in this series.

The costumes aren't as exquisite as some shows set in this time period can be, but that makes them more historically accurate. The show isn't full of over the top special effects other than mostly Merlin's magic, but that makes it more believable. I was reminded more of the Disney movie Bedknobs and Broomsticks, especially in the beginning episodes.

All in all, your enjoyment of the series may depend on your love of the King Arthur tale itself. If you're into huge summer blockbuster style special effects, you will be disappointed. If like me, you love history and folklore, Merlin: The Complete First Season is definitely worth at least a borrow from the library, if not as an addition to your library. There is plenty of humorous moments, and it's safe for kids to watch.

Merlin: The Complete First Season is a 5 disc set, with 13 episodes, and a couple of special features/extras - including audio commentary, making of featurettes, video diaries, a photo gallery, and some wallpaper. It totals 568 minutes long. The suggested retail price is $49.99, but as of this posting, Amazon has it for just $34.99.

Win it! I have one copy of Merlin: The Complete First Season on DVD to giveaway to one lucky reader. To enter, tell me your favorite part of the Arthurian Legend or if you think King Arthur was real.

Recipe: Homemade Rolls & Buns

I've been meaning to post this recipe for what seems like AGES! Oops. I also have been meaning to remember to take step by step photos and always forget every time I make a batch. Sigh! I don't want to wait any longer, so here it is!

I like making as much of the food we eat from scratch as I can. It cuts down on trips to the store, and I know what's in it. The best part of this recipe is that you can shape the rolls however you want, so you can make hamburger/sandwich rolls and hot dog buns at the same time - which is good, because you do have to wait for them to rise. They are very filling, so make them a little smaller for kiddos or yourself than the ones for starving teens and husbands. ;) You can also add cheese, garlic, bacon, etc as you wish. In my photos I've added 3/4 cup of cheese and sun dried tomatoes. Here's what you'll need:

4 to 4 3/4 cup flour
1 package yeast
1 cup milk (I use 1/3 cup dry milk and add 1 cup water)
1/3 cup sugar
1/3 cup butter
1/2 tsp salt
2 large eggs

Combine 2 of the cups of flour and the yeast in a large bowl.

Next, heat and stir the milk, sugar, butter, and salt in saucepan until just warm and melted, then you'll want to add it to the flour mixture and mix well - beat for 3 minutes if you use a hand or dough mixer, and by hand at least 5 minutes, stirring in the remaining flour.

Turn the dough on a lightly floured board and knead until smooth and elastic, about 6 to 8 minutes. Grease the bowl, and place the dough in it and cover to let it rise - about an hour. (Remember to place it somewhere warm - on top of your fridge, by a sunny window, or a burning fireplace so it will rise.)

Don't forget it! ;)

When it's risen, punch the dough down softly, cover and let it rest for 10 minutes. While you are waiting, grease your baking pan or sheet. You can sprinkle a little cornmeal if you want, but I don't bother.

Next, you'll shape the rolls - I made HUGE sandwich buns. Let these rise until they have doubled in size. I know it's time consuming, but I swear they are worth it!

You'll want to preheat the oven at 375, and once they are ready - bake them for 15 minutes.

National Kids and Pet Day 2010 (Chicken Soup Giveaway!)

Did you know that today, April 26th is National Kids and Pet Day? It's a great day to grab the kids and do something fun with your pets - maybe take the dogs to the local dog park if you have one nearby, or pick up a new toy to play with your cat.

Not that we need any excuse to do things with our pets around here. We are blessed that most of our pets are very patient with the munchkin - even the Grumpy Princess isn't grumpy with "her" munchkin. lol (She loves kids so much, she lets all of them congregate around her at the park) Gratuitous corgi shot:

You know I can't write a post about a pet holiday without including at least one photo. ;) I'd like to challenge you to do something today with your kiddo(s) and pet(s). DH has to work, so we won't be able to hit up Bandix Dog Park ourself, but they'll get a raincheck and a new boney each to play with. And the kitties will be feasting on shrimp!

Chicken Soup for the Pet Lovers Soul is excited to help let you know about today. They make both cat and dog food, and you can find it at your local pet store or boutique. (Local folks: both Del's Feed Store and Pet Town here in Port Orchard sell it - we shop at both, so I can recommend both places to stop by if you haven't already.)

I've mentioned on here several times that I've fed Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul to several of our corgis in the past. I have a good opinion of this brand - if you are going to feed your dog dry kibble, this is one that is worth exploring. Of course, it is more pricey than grocery store brands, but not by a huge amount.

Win it! Chicken Soup For the Pet Lovers Soul has generously offered to give one of my readers a $20 gift certificate to Care-A-Lot. Care-A-Lot carries all sorts of pet goodies for you to spoil your furry friends with!Petco - I've just been informed that the sponsors are changing it to Petco. (How about a shopping trip with your furry friend?) To enter, tell me about your furry friends, and if you're familiar with Chicken Soup for the Pet Lovers Soul.

Review: Subway's Breakfast Menu (Giveaway!)

Early this morning, we headed off to the airport a little over an hour away to pick up my parents who were arriving. (My Mommy and Daddy are here! YAY!)

We are not morning people.

We are also rarely on time.

At least I admit our faults. The lateness meant we had no time to grab anything to eat before we left. Luckily, I had just been asked if I was interested in reviewing Subway's new breakfast menu and had received a gift card for us to try it out.

I'll be honest, I'm not fond of breakfast foods I don't make myself. I've always avoided fast food breakfasts like the plaque. I'd rather suck it up and wait until lunch foods are served - I just don't like the greasy mess that most fast food breakfasts are. (or the soggy buns - ew!) And I shudder to think about the calorie count in some of the muffins. (Bagels I can do! But they are always so expensive, I can't bring myself to spend the $$$.) I do love me some Subway sandwiches though, so I figured their breakfast versions would be good.

Subway is open for breakfast at most locations at 7 AM. (7:30 on Sundays at some) Kudos to the location we stopped at - we were in and out in under 5 minutes, so we didn't add much to our lateness. An English Muffin Melt with a 16 oz cup of coffee is just $2.50, so that's a pretty good deal to me. (If you don't drink coffee or are super picky on your coffee like me, just ask if they will let you order soda from the fountain machine instead like I did. I can't guarantee all locations will, but they were super nice about it.) I tried the Double Bacon, Egg, and Cheese - well, without the egg. I added some peppers and olives to it - mmm! Just like any Subway sandwich, you can add the veggies you want to them. And if English Muffins aren't your thing, you can also choose from flat breads and regular breads (prices vary). I liked it - I'll definitely try it again if we're on the hunt for breakfast when we're traveling.

Did you know you can find Subway over on Facebook?

Win it! Thanks to Subway, I have $10 gift cards to give away to three lucky readers! To enter, visit Subway's breakfast page, and let us know which sandwich you'd try out, or tell us what you thought of them if you have already tried one.

You can also get a second entry for following Subway over on Twitter. (Please leave your Twitter ID in your comment.)

As always, if you have completed the first entry above, you can also receive extra entries for:

-Subscribing to my feed OR following my blog
-Blogging about this giveaway with a link back
-Tweeting about this giveaway (leave the link or include @psychotichouse)

That's up to five (5) possible entries! Giveaway ends May 8th, 2010 at 11:59 PST. US Only, sorry. :( Please leave your email address in your comment, or have it available in your profile so I can contact you if you've won. Winners drawn via Random.org.

I received a $10 gift card to try out Subway's breakfast menu. Three readers will win the same prize, as fulfilled by the sponsor.

Free Summer Bowling For Kids

I'm happy to say that another one of the free summer kids programs is back again this year! I was worried with the economy still being so-so, most of these wouldn't return.

Like last year, kids can bowl two free games at participating bowling alleys each day! You must register online and print out your tickets (you will also be given the option to purchase a family pass for $23.95 - this is NOT necessary for the kids to bowl free, but if you as parents want to participate) As a heads up, at most places you will still have to pay for your shoe rentals.

For my local folks, I don't see any alleys participating here in Kitsap county, but if you don't mind the drive, I see several in areas like Tacoma and Puyallup. (We love Tower Lanes over on 6th Avenue in Tacoma!)

Review: KINeSYS

I was recently asked if I would like to try out KINeSYS sunscreen for my family. Unfortunately, it takes forever to get real sunlight here with all our rain, so the occassions this time of year that we need sunscreen are limited. lol Finally, I was indulged late last week when we hit almost 70 degrees - go ahead and laugh those of you who think that's cold. (I laugh when they whine when it's too hot in the 80's here - we're used to 70's being coat and long sleeve weather ourselves LOL)

I'm not sure if most people realize this, but a bottle of sunscreen should only last you a day or so at the beach for your family. Yes, I'm serious. You need to apply sunscreen liberally as often as the bottle tells you to in order for it to really work.

KINeSYS is a brand of performance sunscreen, meant to stay on while you play hard - and this means while your kids play hard, too. KINeSYS has a series of lines made just for kids! There are even PINK bottles for girls meant to get your daughters happy to use it. (There's a fragrance free edition, too)

KINeSYS Kids comes in a micro spray bottle, making it easier to get to hard to reach places. It is fragrance free, oil and alcohol free, and PABA free, making it hypo-allergenic. It comes in a SPF 30, which is just the right SPF for us all - you do want to get some sun in, helping with your vitamin D levels, of course - but you still want to block the harmful UVB AND UVA rays. (Some folks forget that there are two different kinds of rays... you'd be surprised) It also happens to be water-resistant, so while you will still need to reapply at the pool every few hours, it will help.

The bottles also happen to be recyclable (if your area recycles them, of course), and their products are cruelty free (two thumbs up from my family on that one, of course). Canadian readers will be proud to know the label says it's made in Canada.

So from this Momma's perspective: I actually tested it on my arm first before spraying it on the munchkin. Yes, I'll be paranoid until she's 30. LOL No itching with me, so I tried it on her. The mist is fine, and as soon as it's dry, you don't notice that greasy look like you do with some brands. You don't have to rub it deeply into the skin like some brands either, you just spray it on. (You can also cover your kiddo's eyes and spray it on the face, but I sprayed some on my hands and rubbed it on) It says it is fragrance free, but I *think* I smelled a tiny little something for a split second... it could be my imagination though. I like that the bottle is also small enough that I can slip one into my everything-but-the-kitchen-sink bag for days the sun sneaks through (this IS Washington), and the orange color of this bottle makes it easier to find when I am digging for it through all the kiddo's stuff in the bag. I also don't mind using it on me, so I can stick to one bottle instead of lugging two around when we do make trips to the beach.

Did you know? You need to apply sunscreen 30 minutes before going out into the bright sun. Most people wait until they are at the beach or pool to apply - make sure you do it before you get into the car! You also need to apply sunscreen every 2-3 hours, and as soon as you come in out of the water or very sweaty activities.

KINeSYS does retail for $18.99 for a 4 oz bottle making it a little on the higher end for sunscreen, but the spray applicator makes it worth a higher cost - it's easy to apply on little ones. You can order KINeSYS online via their website - and they have free shipping on order of $45 or more right now, so it's a good time to stock up for upcoming Summer camps. You can also find it at places like REI. (one of those places my DH will not let me in for fear I will buy half their outdoor department... LOL)

I received samples of KINeSYS to try out in my home and write a review if I wished. All opinions are my own. For more on sunscreen issues, visit About's How To Use Sunscreen, or speak with your child's pediatrician or dermatologist.

Challenge Butter Real Bakers Giveaway

The folks over at Challenge Butter must have loved my Divine Chocolate Cake recipe I shared with you just before the holidays, because they contacted me again and asked if I was interested in working with them again! Well, OF COURSE! I love Challenge Butter, and I use it in my kitchen. I'm not just saying that because they contacted me - I really do use their butter, and stock up when I can find it on sale. I pick up both the salted and unsalted butter varieties, and DH loves their spreadable for when we have toast.

Now I've made myself hungry, because I'm thinking about my homemade rolls with their butter on them. Mmmm... unfortunately, it's the middle of the night when I am typing this, and I'm all out of rolls - it would be several hours before a fresh batch would be ready. Phooey!

But seriously, if you are looking for a good recipe from scratch for rolls, go check out my recipe I've linked there. Challenge sent me a few coupons to use on stocking up on their butter, and that's the first thing I made. They also spoiled me with some great pans from NordicWare, including an adorable little animal face pancake griddle.

For those of you unfamiliar with Challenge Butter, it's available here in the Northwest. Right now, they have teamed up with NordicWare for the Real Bakers Photo Contest. The grand prize is a 48-piece collection from Nordic Ware including Spring-themed Bundt pans, cookware sets and accessories valued at nearly $1300! There's other Nordic Ware prizes too, so hurry on over to check it out an enter! You can also vote for entries if you don't have great photos. (I know mine always leave much to be desired...)

Win it! Challenge Butter provided me with some extra free product coupons so I can share them with you! One lucky reader will win three coupons for any Challenge butter product for free! To enter, visit the Real Bakers Contest, and either enter and leave the link to your story (so you can get votes!), or vote for someone, and come back and tell us who you voted for! :)

Local Spotlight: Bandix Dog Park

I have to say, one of the best things about Washington is the amount of parks and trails available for people to hike on - and man's best friend has some of their own too.

Bandix Dog Park is located off of Olalla (Exit off Highway 16? I think) and it's an off leash park for man's best friend. Yes, no leashes to get tangled in - hurray! Children under the age of 14 are welcome, but must be supervised at all times. (Please be careful - as both a human parent and a pet parent, I am horrified at the amount of parents who allow their very small kiddos to walk around. I trust MY dogs, but I don't know how YOUR dog will react.)

Bandix is pretty big - 30 acres, and has plenty of snaking trails throughout. You can easily spend several hours hiking in it. It also has different terrains - one moment I swear I am back in South Texas, the next is definitely Washington forest. There are picnic tables if you want to make a day of it, as well as benches made from trees throughout:

All of the trails are named, and done in these cute bone shaped signs:

Take a look at some of this beautiful scenery:

If hiking is not your thing, you are welcome to bring along a lawn chair and watch your dogs play with others in the large cleared area:

There is also a special pen for small dogs (20 pounds and under) so you don't have to worry about being run over by the big dogs:

Of course, admission is free, but please remember to bring bags to clean up after your pet. There is a good amount of parking, and as of this posting, a porta-potty was available (if you dare) for those gotta-go moments. No water is available, so be sure to bring some for you and your dog.

Giveaway: Arbonne

A good beauty regime can make or break us women - even if you don't wear a lot of make up, we still need to keep our skin healthy, especially on our face. No one wants to look 10 years older than they are - well, unless you are still in high school and trying to sneak into a club. ;)

Arbonne is a skin care line developed in Switzerland back in 1980. All of Arbonne's skin care products are botanically based. They also get a thumbs up from me because they are vegan friendly, and are not only not tested on animals, but made without the icky animal by-products. They also happen to make weight loss products that are also formulated without animal products or by-products, and they also have acne treatments, cosmetics, and spa detox systems.

Arbonne, which is available through consultants, also recently revamped their RE9 Advanced line, and if you'd like to read a first hand review of the line, check out Beauty Bambina's RE9 Advanced review. (You can also follow Beauty Bambina on Twitter or subscribe to their feed for lots of great reviews and beauty news, too)

If you're interested in trying it, your first order of $150 retail or more as a preferred client entitles you to receive a free product up to $100. (Wow!) Visit http://www.myskinspot.com or call 866-52-ORDER to speak to a consultant.

Win it! Beauty Bambina is generously offering to give one of my readers any product of their choice, up to $50, from Arbonne! (or you can use the $50 towards an order on the site if you want to take advantage of the free item deal up above!) To enter, visit http://www.myskinspot.com and let us know which Arbonne product you'd like to try if you won!

You can also get a second entry for blogging about the contest and linking to the Beauty Bambina as the sponsor and my blog.

As always, if you have completed the first entry above, you can also receive extra entries for:

-Subscribing to my feed OR following my blog
-Tweeting about this giveaway (leave the link or include @psychotichouse)

That's up to four (4) possible entries! Giveaway ends May 8th, 2010 at 11:59 PST. US Only, sorry. :( Please leave your email address in your comment, or have it available in your profile so I can contact you if you've won. Winners drawn via Random.org.

I didn't receive anything for hosting this giveaway, but one reader will win a prize as described above and fulfilled by the sponsor.

If You Hate Your Job...

Just be thankful you're not stuck wearing this:

I feel horribly bad for this person. At least it's not really hot today, but still - who wants to dress up as a giant frosty? (Not to mention... maybe I just have a not so innocent mind today *coughs* but look at the top of the frosty, it's like a giant breast... who came up with this costume design????)

On the bright side, I suppose it makes for an interesting resume. ;)

Review: Playful Threads

Let me start this post out by saying quickly that there are photos of lingerie as well as woman talk included in this review, so keep little eyes away if you want to. (It's not meant to be offensive!)

When the folks over at Playful Threads approached me and asked if I was interested in doing a review, I was super excited. Wearing a lot of skirts, I wear a lot of tights. You could say I have a fishnet addiction, because I have so many different colors and styles. Playful Threads has a ton of different styles of fishnet tights to choose from. (Tip: hesitant to wear fishnet out of the house but love the look? Or always get your fishnet stuck in boot zippers? Layer your tights! Wear your fishnets, then wear a solid color sheer tight over the fishnet - you'll have a fun new look) I spent an hour looking through all the fun sexy dresses, lingerie, rhinestone jewelry, before I finally deferred to letting my DH pick something out for me! (Or I would have been there for DAYS. I'm not kidding.)

Um, ladies, be warned, letting your DH pick what item you want to review from a site like Playful Threads can be a little dangerous. LOL! He ended up picking out the Nadia - Open Cup Bra Top with Chain and Thong - which I don't mind wearing, but there's no way on earth you're getting a photo of me wearing this for a review on here. I get enough naughty housewife searches as it is - and if I am taking the route, I'd want to get paid for the looky loos! LOL! ;) I almost ended up choosing the McKenna Star Print Bikini because it rocks, but he liked this better. Oh well. ;)

The shipping was super fast, and the packaging discreet. You can pick up your mail and no one would have any clue your DH didn't just order himself a car part or something from eBay. ;) You won't have to be embarrassed that your mail carrier saw what you just ordered, or that your pre-teen who is grabbing the mail will know. (Well, all bets are off if they open your mail for you, of course)

Now I'm used to shopping in stores that carry lingerie and clothing like this. I own more than my fair share of corsets, tights, etc, and I KNOW when something is going to fall apart the first time you wear it. I don't mean if it gets pulled off. ;) But I mean clasps, zippers, etc. The seams were well done on the Nadia, it has an easy slide back closure on the bra, and it even came with some replacement chains for the chain trim. The sizing is also true - this was something I was worried about, because I've bought pieces that say they are one size fits all, and sure it is - if you wear a size 2 and an A cup! It also has generous give in the elastic, and "moves" with you. It's not rigid vinyl, and it's not uncomfortable to wear. You can easily do a sexy striptease for your hubby or significant other in it. ;)

While searching through Playful Threads site, I noticed they weren't just limited to what some term "bedroom" or fantasy wear - they have a lot of clubwear, and clothing you can wear out, including some great dresses. And if you are on the hunt for plus size sexy clothing and lingerie, there is a lot to choose from on Playful Threads. We're not just talking one or two items here, they even have plus size fantasy costumes, which is a hard find. The prices aren't outrageous, either. (Who wants to pay $100+ for a plus size nun costume like on some sites?)

I was so pleased I plan to order this awesome looking Skullduggery Corset Set:

Doesn't it rock? :)

The only thing is I wish they carried shoes. I know *I* own 267 pairs of shoes that would match these outfits, but your average woman - unless they are like me - does not. The shoes really complete some of these playful costumes. I guess you could pull out any pair of black heels, but sometimes, the shoes make the whole fantasy. ;)

If you've found a little something you'd like to own, Playful Threads is offering free shipping from their website using promo code FREECP!

Storm's Earth Day Thoughts...

You know, I think Earth Day should be Earth Daily, and not necessarily some big PR event for companies to hold. I'm not really big on the whole global warming thing - before some of you freak out, let me explain more. I totally do believe that humans have a big impact on the Earth. I believe that we here in America are wasteful society. Maybe more harm than good has come out of the whole disposables market. We buy, buy, buy, and throw away long before something has worn out. (Trust me - I shop at thrift stores and I see things brand new with packaging and tags all. the. time.)

I recycle a lot, I reuse plenty, I combine my trips (obviously, since I don't drive. LOL) I think it's wasteful with the amount of driving most people do, and I swear everytime I see someone driving a Hummer in town that I just want to grab me a missile launcher and let it go. I'm sorry if this offends anyone, but unless you're in a warzone, you don't need a Hummer. To get back to it though, I do these things not because I'm worried about global warming, but because I respect the Earth. Nothing is infinite but time. Eventually, we'll run out of some resources. Yes, there is pollution, but we have to remember that there have ALWAYS been warming and cooling periods throughout the Earth's history.

So on this Earth Day, I challenge you to join the dark side (hehe) and make it earth YEAR. Don't do it because it's the "in" thing to do. Don't do it because you're worried about the carbon footprint of your blog. ;) Don't do it because Government ScientistJoe Schmo is running around like Henny Penny - OMG! The sky is falling! We're going to BURN UP!

Do it because you're sick of waste.

Buy used if you can. Don't throw away things that can be used by others. Repurpose items. Stop buying so much food that you have to throw it out because it's now rancid. For pete's sake, WALK instead of driving around the parking lot trying to get that closest parking space (your rear end will thank you). I could go on... but you get the point. :)

Happy Earth Day!

I Think I'm In Love...

I know these boots are totally not up a lot of folks' alley, but these American Flag Boots totally rock:

Wouldn't they be awesome as part of a Wonder Woman costume?

(You can find them over at Rivithead. I have a long wishlist now!)

Review & Gift Idea: Clips4aCure

I confess... I bought a pair of little boots for my daughter before she was even born, just because they matched a pair of mine. I thought it would be the cutest thing, being able to match!

I also admit to being a hair clippie junkie. DH doesn't even say a word anymore, he knows he's fighting a losing battle. Hey, that's the fun of having little girls, right? Pretty hair clips! :)

Clips4acure not only has cute clippies and fun accessories for little girls, but they also have a great gift idea for this Mother's Day - matching Mother and Daughter flip flops, the Travi Jo Sandal. There is pretty much any color combination your Mom would like, and a set retails for $45. Clips4acure sent this absolutely PERFECT set our way:

Swoon! They start at a 3/4 kids and go up to a adult size 10. They are not cheap fall apart after 2 wears flip flops, either. Flip flops are a year round wardrobe staple in South Texas, I know good flippies when I see them! ;) They are a good thickness, and well made. If you look closely at the bows, you'll even see tiny little rhinestones. Double swoon! They also sent over an adorable matching zebra clippie for my daughter as you can see in the second photo, that's also well made.

And with every purchase from Clips4acure, you are helping to find a cure for cancer.

Clips4acure is run by Sheridan, a single Momma with two pretty girls, and she's a 13 year cancer survivor. 20% of Clips4acure's profits are donated to the American Cancer Society and the Susan G. Komen Breast Center.

Save-A-Lot Deals 4/20 - 5/2 2010

I'm not really a huge Save-A-Lot fan, just because I thought some of the prices were high compared to a regular grocery store - I think it's a huge trap you can fall into in these kinds of "bargain" grocery stores where you end up paying more for your groceries in the long run, than if you stalked sales at the regular grocery stores. That being said, they DO accept coupons, and even have a printable coupon section on their website. And I do always grab our bananas there because they are 3 pounds for $1 - you can't beat that. (You just have to only buy what you'll eat in a few days - I notice they ripen very quickly)

This week's sale ad here in Washington has some great prices through May 2nd though:

Wylwood Frozen Corn on the Cob (6 ct) $1 - I recommend buying several of these now and freezing the extra for summer grilling months!

Frisby's Shoe String Potatoes 2 for $1 - Generally, I say buying frozen french fries you end up paying more than if you'd just peel and cut potatoes yourself. These are 20 oz bags though, and for 50 cents, you can't go wrong for a quick snack or dinner. Need a recipe for them? Try my French Dry Casserole. I've bought several bags to keep in the freezer to make it!

Creamsicle, Fudgsicle, or Popsicle Pops $1 - 10-20 ct packages for $1, you can't go wrong for a cheaper treat for the kiddos. Snag a couple of boxes and put them away for warmer months ahead!

Diet Coke, Coke 2 Litres $1 - Love it or hate it, $1 is a decent price for 2 litres here in WA. If you plan to be BBQing or holding get togethers anytime soon, you might want to grab a couple.

Del Pino's Pasta Cans 2 for $1 - These seem to be the Save-A-Lot generic version of ravioli and spaghetti & meatballs in a can. For comfort food in your food storage plan or as emergency easy to heat food, or for the kids to have a quick meal with, this is the best price you're going to find - stock up if you use it!

Malone's Baked Beans 2 for $1 - This is kind of high to me - I buy my baked beans for less, but it's still a good price, and with grilling season around the corner, you may want to buy some. (I've seen other brands the same price elsewhere, though)

Bananas 3 pounds for $1 - This is the usual Save-A-Lot price, and can't be beat around here. If you do smoothies and shakes, sometimes you'll find that they are clearing the browning bananas for 5 pounds for $1! (You can also process them and freeze them for banana baked goods - just peel, cube or puree, and freeze in a freezer safe bag.

Coburn Farms American, Pepper Jack or Swiss Singles Cheese 2 for $3 - If you use this, it's a good non sale price for 16 slices.

Milk (gallon) $1.79 - this has been the price for several months at ours, and it's the cheapest in town.

Avocados 3 for 99 cents - snap these up at that price and make some homemade guacamole if you like it! (It makes a fun topping on burgers, too)

Chicken Leg Quarters 44 cents a pound in a 10 pound pack (frozen) - I bought this once before when it was 59 cents a pound, and it's good chicken, but be warned, that bag is frozen solid like a brick. Unless you have a large family, you'll want to use it all at once. (What we do - DH grills some for a meal, and then I put the rest in a large crockpot and cook it until all the meat falls off the bone. Then I package the cooked meat into meal portions and freeze it to save time on my meals. Save the broth, too! Skim the fat off, and use it to make mashed potatoes, chicken flavored rice, or homemade soups)

Portman's Salad Dressings 99 cents - The good deal here is that if you hit up the printable coupons section on Save-A-Lot's website, you can get a coupon for BOGOF! That's about 50 cents a bottle, so it's a good stock up price. (Watch expiration dates if you don't eat a lot of salad)

By the way, if you haven't already, be sure to sign up for their Smart Shopper Club email list - you'll get a coupon to save $5 off your next purchase of $20 or more!

Tropicana Juicy Rewards Updates

I hope you were able to take advantage of the Fandango deal I posted last week if you wanted to. Have you used it yet and watched something good? We called in a babysitting favor and saw Clash of the Titans finally. I understand why some folks called it a God of War ripoff, but it IS a remake from long before GOW. It was still good though - it's definitely one worth seeing on a bigger screen.

Tropicana Juicy Rewards has another limited time deal out just in time for Mother's Day - you can redeem three points for a $15 off your purchase of $49.99 or more at 1-800-Flowers.com. You don't have to hurry - you can redeem until May 10th.

If cut flowers aren't your (or your Mother's) thing, don't forget that you can also donate your points to help the rain forest. Donating just three points helps rescue 100 square feet of rainforest! It's a great way to help out on Earth Day tomorrow. (You can donate any number of points - even just one!)

I'm a Tropicana Juicy Insider and received a gift card to help participate in activites from the website.

Baskin Robbins 31 Cent Scoop Night 4/28

Did you know that Baskin-Robbins' "31" stands for a different ice cream flavor for each day of the month?

Mmm... imagine your own freezer full of that many flavors! ;)

For the fourth year in a row, Baskin-Robbins will be hosting 31 Cent Scoop Night on Wednesday, April 28 from 5pm – 10pm! Baskin-Robbins is partnering with the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF) and is donating $100,000 to the organization. If you are unfamiliar with the NFFF, it honors America’s fallen fire heroes and their families by developing and expanding programs to recognize fallen heroes and assist their families and co-workers. On this night, many of your local firefighters will be at your Baskin-Robbins store teaching children and their families fire safety tips and enjoying ice cream with their community.

It takes a lot of courage to run into a burning building that could collapse at any moment - always help support your local fire department! And I can't think of better way to do that, than to enjoy some YUMMY ice cream at a killer price, can you? I know where we will be next Wednesday!

Last year in 2009, Baskin-Robbins scooped more than 4 million scoops of ice cream! Let's see if they beat that this year!

Just sharing a deal - I didn't receive anything for this post in case you were wondering.

Free Book For Kids From Barnes & Noble

Review: Mad by Design Handbags

Most women love purses. (Aye!) And most of those women who are Moms would probably love a new purse as their Mother's Day gift!

Mad by Design does wholesale couture handbags. You can find their bags over at Twisted Orchid, where you can get FREE shipping on your purchase!

They sent me over this GORGEOUS Cold Purple Linen Clutch Purse:

It's retro goodness! I could seriously see Samantha over on Bewitched carrying it on the show! The clutch is very well made, and the linen is a perfect match for the warmer months here on the horizon. It also has chain strap inside that you can use as a hand strap, or a longer one as a shoulder strap, or simply keep it hidden and carry it like a regular clutch. I appreciate versatility! It also retails for just $28, so it's a budget friendly accessory.

If purple and/or clutches aren't the Mom in your life's thing, there are lots of other Mad by Design purses available on the Twisted Orchid site. Check out this Cashmere Gathered Purse:

And for those with similar tastes as mine, you totally have to see this Ebony Peony bag:

I love it! It's also available in an almost burgundy silk color. They even have some eco-friendly bamboo handbags.

Twisted Orchid can also be found over on Facebook - and here's some trivia for you - they are also one of the few Facebook pages that has a fully operation shopping cart built into it.

I received a clutch as a sample to write a review.

Thrift Store Tuesday - Out of Words

Welcome to another week of resale and thrift store shopping!

I'm out of questions! LOL Yep, I'm officially tongue tied for one this week. Just tell what goodies you've found while thrifting lately!

We hit Value Village and I was startled at the prices again... just when I thought they couldn't go any higher, they sure did! I did score this set of Madeline dolls for the kiddo though for $1.99:

I just need to clean them up for her. Still, I can't complain about $40 worth of dolls for that price! :)

A Later Edition Of Random Thoughts Tuesday

randomtuesday

Dear Diet Dr. Pepper, how I love thee.

I saw a banner ad for a TV series called Tacky Houses (well, I think that's what is called, anyways) Why do I get the feeling my Halloween house belongs on there? LOL I know, every October I'm worried someone will stage an intervention for us and our mad shopping.

Speaking of houses, I realized we have a problem. I always peek at real estate in case there are good deals that cannot be passed up - but here's the thing: we want land. in the middle of nowhere. Do you know how hard it is to find a Munsters style house in the middle of nowhere? ;) I know they can move houses, but I think I'd shudder at the cost. Building a new house doesn't really interest me - there's no fun in that. I need a pre-1900 house with a new kitchen, how hard can that be? LOL

For those of you that have done Disney World or Disneyland, how old were your kids the first time you went? I was thinking 3 was a good age for the kids to actually enjoy and participate in things?

Do people just forget that the word "thank you" is in their vocabulary? I am getting tired of trying to keep the door open for people behind us and never get a thank you in return.

I suppose those are the same idiots that think revving past us might actually get them where they need to be 2 minutes earlier. I mean really, wow, you saved two minutes max, and probably put more wear on your car, not to mention can't brake fast enough to save a life. I hope those two minutes were worth it. *rolls her eyes*

Believe me, it's not like my DH is the best driver in the world. But I swear, folks around here almost make him look like a good driver!

Chocolate. I crave chocolate. Ooey gooey chocolate brownies. ooohhh... with walnuts! and chocolate chunks...

Dratted DH and his blood sugar. Oh, I could make it for me, but then I'd have to eat every single brownie out of the batch, and I don't think my rear end would appreciate that much. Phooey.

It bites that it is 4 PM, and it's almost as dark as it's been around 7 PM. I was enjoying the sun we've had lately - it makes me feel like we don't live in a dungeon.
