Food Storage Friday - FIFO

When you are stocking up your pantry, and creating your food storage, the hardest thing to deal with is rotating that food storage. It's easier just to purchase it, and shove it on the shelf wherever you can find room, right? Well, yes - of course! - but this leads to waste, and the point of food storage is to save money!

Practice the FIFO system religiously. FIFO - First In, First Out. Of course, the easiest way to do this is to have a can shelf system such as the Shelf Reliance Cansolidator I reviewed in this column earlier this year, but you don't need a fancy store bought shelving system. If you Google FIFO plans online, you should be able to find homemade plans easily, or you can just stack them on the shelves you have. I use can flats to move everything in and out easily off the shelves. If the cardboard with logos drive you nuts (they do me, too), pick up sticky paper from your dollar store, and cover the edges with a more eye pleasing print.

You'll want to make sure that items with the shortest expiration date on them (as well as dented cans) are at the front so they can be used first. I write the dates on the top of my cans and other packaging with a Sharpie and it's worked quite well for me. If you purchase larger quantities of packaged goods, and all of the items on the flat are the same and the same expiration date, you can just write the date on the box (or just use a sticky note, but beware of them falling off).

If you are rotating your pantry well, you should rarely end up with an expired good, so you are saving money by not wasting food. When you are purchasing extra on sale, it's almost like an investment, so treat it as such! If you have the time, once a month you should check your pantry to be sure you haven't missed something expired, as well as being on the lookout for damaged goods (sometimes, even a can that's nowhere near the expiration date can go bad and bloat, or even leak!) and evidence of bugs or other vermin. This also allows you to see if you are running low on certain items, or if perhaps you are using more of a certain food than you were expecting.

As a reminder, the end of the year is a great time for picking up deals on food as stores go through and get rid of the last of the stock of items that just aren't selling well. If your favorite stores has an odds 'n ends section (it's usually near the back of the store) be sure to scope it out and see if there's anything good! If you see something you use, grab what you'll use in a reasonable time frame - you probably won't find it again.

Book Review: Love On Assignment By Cara Lynn James

I recently received a copy of the new book, Love On Assignment by Cara Lynn James, to review.

This one is set in Newport, Rhode Island, back in 1900 - when it was quite the resort town. Charlotte Hale is the main character, and she's the secretary for the local newspaper, the Rhode Island Reporter. Her dream is to become a real reporter, a rather hard to accomplish goal back then. One day a carrot is dangled in front of her - she is given the opportunity for a "real" assignment - to go undercover as the new governess for Daniel Wilmont, who happens to write a very controversial column for the rival newspaper, the Newport Gazette. It turns out Daniel is a young widowed professor of religion, and Charlotte begins to question her "job" as she rediscovers her faith in God and begins to fall in love with him. (Daniel, that is - not God. lol) Will she be able to complete her assignment, and bring Daniel down, or will she help protect him, and turn her back on her dream?

I read this book in one evening - it was a fun, light read, and the kind of romance book I enjoy - it's appropriate without page after page of play by play, if you catch my drift. ;) I found myself intrigued into Charlotte's character, and enjoyed reading her thoughts change as the story progressed - the story clearly shows her wavering between what was right and what she needed to do to finish her assignment. (On this, it was a pleasant thing to see someone doing the right thing - unlike so many in today's society - sigh!) This book does have a little more mentioning of religion into it than some of the books I have reviewed in the past, so take that as a heads up if you're not into Christian fiction. There were a couple of parts that seemed a little drawn out, but overall, I liked this book - even if it's not a permanent addition to your personal library, it's worth borrowing from your local library. (along with other titles from this author)

Love On Assignment is book two in the Ladies of Summerhill series. (Love On A Dime was the first book in the series) The next book in the series is called Love By The Book, and it will be out in July 2011. It feels like an eternity to wait, but it gives us something to look forward to. ;) Don't think you need to read the first book in the series - they are stand alone and are just set with the same general theme.

This book also contains a reading group guide at the end of the book with some discussion questions.

Love On Assignment by Cara Lynn James is a Christian Romance Fiction paperback book, published by Thomas Nelson. It is 327 pages long, with a cover price of $14.99 (though Amazon has it for $9.31 as of this posting.) It is also available for the Kindle and other e-readers.

I received a copy of this book in order to read and share my thoughts on it.

Pet First Aid Kits

Yesterday, we had a minor first aid emergency. It wasn't one of us humans, but rather when we were trimming the Grumpy Princess's nails, we trimmed a little too far. Within two minutes it looked like a murder scene in my kitchen. I wish I could say I was exaggerating on this one, but her little nail was like Old Faithful. She bled for over an hour, and pretty much all the tricks we had didn't work. We have a pet first aid kit, but it was in the car (since they travel with us so much). Since many of the items in a pet first aid kit are the same as a human first aid kit, I just figured we could always use our supplies if needed.

Have you checked your first aid supplies recently? If you need to take care of a gushing wound for yourself - or your pet - do you understand how much gauze and other supplies you would go through in just five minutes waiting for an ambulance to arrive? Or while trying to make the trip to the ER? I was amazed at what we went through just for this small wound on a dog! You really need to have a separate emergency kit for your pet - and place it where you can easily get to it. I wasted precious time digging though our kit because for some reason, DH had put the gauze in a different kit than the tape and other supplies were. (Don't ask... and yes, it's been fixed now)

Here's a rundown on the supplies you should have in your pet's first aid kit:

*antibiotic ointment and wound disinfectant
*antidiarrheal medicine (example: Kaopectate - but ask your vet first)
*bandage tape (several rolls - it can be hard to put on a moving pet!)
*copy of your dog’s license, physical description, recent photo and microchip id number if they have one
*copy of your dog’s medical and vaccine records
*cotton balls
*cotton swabs
*elastic bandage
*eye wash solution
*hydro cortisone ointment
*hydrogen peroxide
*tourniquet cloth (can be used as a muzzle in dire emergency)
*rectal baby thermometer
*Pedialyte (it really works for quickly rehydrating a pet)
*rounded-tip scissors
*sterile gauze pads; multiple sizes and preferably at least a dozen
*tweezers
*Stop quick/Styptic Pencil
*vinyl exam gloves
*instant cold pack
*hand sanitizer (this is more for you)
*two towels or blankets (one for keeping your dog warm and one to use for transporting your dog)
*vet and 24-hour vet contact information, plus poison control hotline number inside a waterproof bag

And if you live in an area prone to snakes, consider adding a snake bit kit. Just speak with your vet on your next visit, or give them a call. Here's a link to a Holistic Snake Kit, but I have no experience with trying it, so use this at your own risk.

You can use a small separate CLEAR Rubbermaid tote, and be sure to label it. I like the ones that have the handles built into the lid, so you can easily grab it and take it with you if you are traveling, or need to evacuate for a hurricane or other natural disaster. If you have larger dogs - over 50 pounds - double up on items such as the cotton balls and gauze.

I still need to restock a few things, but I'll share pictures when the new kit is all done.

Desperately Digging Out Of Debt?

If your New Year's resolution is to finally get out of debt, or save a bunch of money, you're probably sitting there crunching the numbers trying to figure out where to cut corners. Maybe you've already trimmed the fun stuff - no more coffees out, bye-bye cable, and you haven't eaten out since Aunt Myrtle invited you late last year. Here's a few, albeit more painful ideas, to help eliminate that debt.

Sell off the clutter: Most of us buy way too much stuff. It's a bad habit! Go through your home and look at the non-heirloom stuff that never gets used. Upgraded to a PS3 and never play those PS2 games? Sell them! Have a garage full of camping equipment, but the last time you set foot into a national forest was 1998? What are you waiting for? If you need quick money, you can always take games to places like Gamestop, or take tools to places like your local pawnshop, but be prepared to not get as much as you may like. Instead, take advantage of sites like eBay and Craigslist - you can dictate your price this way.

Take on a renter: Have an extra room now that kids have moved out? Why not rent it? It can be a win-win situation for both of you - you end up with a little more money, and they end up being able to save a little money by not renting a full apartment. If you do this one, be sure to spring for a background check and lay out the rules very carefully. Again, placing an ad on a site like Craigslist is totally free, and you can always change your mind if you decide you're not liking the potential renters.

Get rid of a car: On insurance alone, this should save you at least $1,000 a year. Add in gas, maintenance costs, and car payments, and your savings could be even more substantial. Sure, this is probably the most painful way to go about it for many, but if you have two cars to begin with, it's not that bad. Check into carpooling (or start a carpool of your own), cut back the excess trips, and hop online to your local community transportation site to see schedules for the buses and trains (and subways if you're lucky!). What you would be spending on gas would more than cover your monthly pass. Or if you are close enough, use a bike to get some of the places you need to go - you'll burn off calories too, which will help if you've had to cut that gym membership out as well.

Buy nothing: OK, so this one seems super hard, but it's not quite as hard as you think. Most of us have all the clothing we need hanging in our closet, or put away in storage. We also probably have a healthy dose of entertainment via books, games, and movies that we already own. So stay out of stores and refuse to purchase anything for one month. Chances are, you already have at least a two week supply of food on hand - not going shopping for one month would help cut down on waste in your pantry too. (The average family of four spends between $500 and $700 monthly on groceries alone!) Hit up your local library for books and movies if you're bored with your selection at home.

Review & Giveaway: Coffee-Mate

When we first moved to Washington, DH would literally snarl at the coffeehouses. He HATED coffee. I enjoy it, but I don't like to drink a lot of it, so I would usually just treat myself to a cup here and there at the big coffee place - even though we had a coffeemaker and yeah, I know, it's cheaper to make it at home.

Then suddenly DH discovered coffee over the summer and it became a crack habit his new addiction. $10 worth of coffee drinks each trip out adds up FAST, so I bought him a brand new machine this past Fall thanks to CSN (um... post going up later!), and I started buying the fixin's to make gourmet drinks at home. I can buy a couple of different flavors of Coffee-Mate for that $10! LOL

So when I was asked if I was interested in doing a post on Coffee-Mate, of course I said yes! It already jumps into my cart on a regular basis! lol Coffee-Mate has both liquid and powdered flavored and unflavored creamers for your coffee. They have sugar free and reduced fat choices - over 25 different ways to add your favorite flavors - plus all are non-dairy and lactose-free.

What I love most about Coffee-Mate, is that it allows me to have fancy schmancy drinks just the like the big coffee house, but at a fraction of the cost. I can still splurge on better quality coffee to make them (although I have to tell you - Coffee-Mate is the only thing that can save the cheap blah brands of coffee) and I am still saving money over the $5 a drink costs. Add your flavor of choice to your favorite coffee, pull out a can of whipped topping, add a few chocolate sprinkles - and you've got almost the same drink!

If you are like me and have a thing for the seasonal flavors such as Gingerbread and Peppermint Mocha, go stock up on the ones on sale right now before they are gone - the unopened powder has a shelf-life of up to 24 months! Just be sure to store it in a cool, dry place. The liquid doesn't last as long unfortunately, so enjoy it while it lasts!

Check out the new Cafe flavors such as Caramel Macchiato and Cafe Latte - you won't want to pay full price for a coffee drink on a daily basis after trying these, either.

And don't think that you are just limited to hot beverages like coffee and hot chocolate - you can use Coffee-Mate to make yummy iced beverages in the summer months, as well as even in baking recipes for desserts. It's a lot more versatile than you think! There are a whole bunch of recipes over on their website! And if you visit the website right now, you can print coupons to save $1.00 and $0.75 off your next purchases of Coffee-Mate. Plus, you can sign up on their website for their email list to get advance notice of other coupons, contests, and possible free samples.

Win it! I have a gift package just like the one I received thanks to Coffee-Mate! One lucky reader will Coffee-mate manufacturer coupons, an iPod speaker dock, iTunes gift card, coffee mug, and a nifty stainless steel spoon that clips onto your coffee bag. (iPod in photo above not included!) To enter, visit Coffee-Mate's website and tell us which flavor you'd choose with your coupon.

Book Review: The Self Aware Parent By Dr. Fran Walfish

I recently received a copy of the book The Self-Aware Parent: Resolving Conflict and Building a Better Bond with Your Child by Dr. Fran Walfish to review.

I know you've probably heard me say on here before that I am DOOMED as my daughter gets older because if she is anything like I was, my work as a parent is going to be cut out for me. I get a kick out of it now, but when she's 11? Yeah, I don't want to think about it. (I'm sorry, Mom!)

The first chapter is called "The Importance Of Knowing Yourself As A Parent" where Dr. Walfish talks about how we tend to repeat the way our parents parented us. Do you find yourself saying "I sound like my mother/father!"? This is fine, unless it's a negative habit, of course. The book goes on to share with you how to recognize the strength and weaknesses of your parenting style and how it affects your child. While kids can be a chip off the ol' block, they are not carbon copies of us. This book helps you understand how you as a parent might clash with your child’s personality, and how to negotiate a common ground. You can't win every battle, but you can make the battles a little less traumatic for both of you!

Each chapter has a top tips summary for you to flip back easily and think about what you've just read. This is awesome. Don't think that the book is just for those with a pre-teen and older; moms and dads of toddlers can learn and prepare as well. It will help you start to get a solid foundation started so the battles aren't as intense down the road. I don't know about you, but I'll take any idea and give it a try to stop screaming hissy fits down the road! Don't expect it to solve all your problems, but perhaps cut down on a few exasperating moments. If nothing else, put it on your library to-read list - you're not out anything then but the time you spend reading it.

The Self-Aware Parent: Resolving Conflict and Building a Better Bond with Your Child by Dr. Fran Walfish is a self help paperback published by Palgrave Macmillan. It is 256 pages long, and has a cover price of $17.00 (although Amazon has it for $11.56 as of this posting). It is also available for the Kindle and other e-readers.

I received a copy of this book in order to share my opinions. All opinions are my own, and not of the author or publisher.

Random Thoughts Tuesday - Doom On You!

randomtuesday

Can you tell what movie we got on Blu-Ray for the holidays? (Ice Age) It's the phrase of the week around here. (Prepare for the zombie apocalypse - or doom on you! LOL)

Either I have a Bullseye on my back, or this is getting much more rampant: I've hit the grocery stores for three quick trips (using up expiring coupons) over the last two weeks. Two of the three trips have had "phantom" items added onto my bill - $3.99 and $5.99 - and one didn't take off $8 from an item that was on sale. Not exactly pocket change, right? I've spent more time standing in line at customer service trying to get my money back than I have spent shopping in the stores itself! And it's not just one grocery, it's been both Freddy's and Safeway.

This is why I prefer self checkout - it doesn't happen when I ring everything up myself. Plus, at least my groceries are bagged properly. And I don't have to hear the clerks grumbling about using my cloth bags.

I seriously want another deep freezer (bigger) so I can just stock it and avoid the grocery store except for a once a week trip to grab some fruits and veggies. I'll miss good sales I suppose, but geez, I'm getting tired of it all.

DH convinced me to go out to eat at McDonald's when he came home yesterday. Not only was the play area closed for a party (Argh!!), but the food was so nasty I couldn't even finish it. Seriously, gag me. How do people eat this stuff every day? I give in because I know he loves fast food, but ick, ick, ick. I felt like I was eating a formaldehyde soaked body part.

Overly dramatic? Sorry. lol

I might be enjoying Amazon's subscribe and save idea a little too much. Instead of fighting my way through Target or WalMart last week, I was able to order the Ziploc big bags I needed, no hassle. Yay! Maybe I should just continue to order my groceries from Safeway online... hmmmm... less hassle... less gas...

Speaking of gas, does anyone else feel like we are headed back to $4+ a gallon? It was $3.19 here at the 76 closest to us yesterday. I know they raise the prices with the holidays, but it makes me cringe.

And the idiot of the year award goes to Charge: Man pushed stolen TV past Auburn PD. Then again, I'm sure the police were thrilled that he made their job easy that day. LOL

So I got annoyed with one of the cats who wasn't quite making the litter box each time. We had upgraded from a normal jumbo litter box to an under the bed style Rubbermaid tote. It improved, but not enough - now they were kicking litter everywhere. (can you see steam coming out of my ears? lol) So on a trip to Mudbay I noticed this giant litter box complete with a spot on the side for the litter scoop. I cringed at the $25.95 price. (So I'm cheap sometimes, sue me! lol Keep in mind that I had four cats though, so it adds up) The other day I stopped at the feed store for emergency rabbit chow (he mostly eats veggies, but I keep kibble in "The Cube" (yes, another Transformers reference) in case he wants a snack) and it hit me that we could do this a LOT cheaper. Enter the giant oval feed bin that is now a litter box in my bathroom. LOL Who needs four litter boxes when this does the place of three? Is only $21.99? AND solves the problem of litter being kicked out?

Yeah, I'm a dork - but a resourceful dork. ;)

Food Storage On Monday? Storing Baking Goods

I skipped Food Storage Friday due to the holiday, but since this is probably the last few days of the good baking sales you'll see at the stores until next Fall, I wanted to share some tips and how to on storing some things.

Flour continues to go up when it comes to the regular prices. Just last year, I was paying $13.49 for a 50 pound bag of bread flour at Costco; nowadays it's cracked the $15 mark. Sure, it's just $2 - but add that up across your grocery cart board, and you can be paying $20 or more extra for the same amount of food compared to last year!

It's not that difficult to store flour for many months at a time, and no - you don't have to purchase it in 50 pound bags! This is the time of year that you can easily find 5 lb bags of flour for around $1.00 or less. Unless you do a ton of baking, this is actually the best size to purchase for most of us since it keeps the contents of it fresh. When purchasing your bags of flour, check to make sure there are no obvious holes or small rips in the packaging.

When you get home, place each package into a large Ziploc bag - the gallon size should work just fine. You'll want to place each package in the freezer at least overnight, if not for several days. This kills any sort of bug that might be lurking in the flour. (I know, I know, you don't want to think about it - but there can be something in there. It's better to kill it off, than end up with your cupboards full of bugs - trust me, I know how disgusting the end result can be if it happens!!) You can stack several bags on a sturdy pantry shelf this way, as long as you aren't worried about mice chewing through the bags.

I've talked about food safe storage buckets and snagging them from your local bakery, but they may not have any in. You can also use those ice cream buckets that you'll find marketed as party pails. If you don't normally buy them, you can always ask on Freecycle or Craigslist. Just be sure to scrub them down very well, and that they are completely dry. Air dry them for a day or two with a teaspoon of baking soda so your flour doesn't end up smelling like strawberries. ;) One bag should fit into each bucket - if you open the bag though, you can fit more flour in - but I don't suggest doing it unless you are going to start using the flour within a month or so. (due to plastic possibly leaching into the flour) If you do decide to open the bag, a single bay leaf placed on top can help ward off any insects that might attempt to get in the bucket.

Another safe storage idea to keep your flour safe, and critters out is those large popcorn tins that everyone seems to have around this time of year. Again, if you don't use them, you can always ask!

You can do the same thing to store sugar. Brown sugar doesn't get hard as quickly as white sugar as you might know, but you need to make sure it's stored in an airtight container. However, as long as you protect your sugar, even if it gets a little harder, it's still good for ages. If you are purchasing it in 4-5 lb bags like the flour, you can store it much the same way, with the same containers. Because I don't use a lot of sugar at once, I store my week's supply in canning jars with about an inch of extra space open (I have four at a time, ready to switch in and out) and I use repurposed lids instead of canning lids. Whenever my sugar starts to get a little hard, I can just shake it back and forth - and no more hard sugar!

Chocolate chips and baking bars can be frozen to use later on, but be aware they will change to having white on the outside. It's not a huge deal if you are baking though.

Vegetable oil really only lasts about 12 months unopened, so stay away from buying too much if you don't use it a lot. Be sure to keep it stored in a cool, dry place. You can store it in your fridge (along with olive oil!), just allow it to come to room temperature before using it.

The Last Menu Planning Monday Of 2010

It sounds like we are supposed to have some colder weather our way with maybe some snow flurries this week, so I hesitant to plan - it's like a gimme around here, every time we drop under 25 degrees no matter what I seem to do, our pipes freeze. I fear having a lot of meat defrosted and then we loose the power, or I have to wash dishes using our rationed emergency water supply.

We were so-so on our turkey on Saturday. It was our first time using one bought from Albertsons, and when we opened it from the package, neither my DH nor I were very impressed. I used some of the leftovers to make a turkey noodle soup in the slow cooker for us (easy peasy - leftover cut up turkey, two cups of water, 3-4 cut up carrots, 1-2 stalks chopped celery, and 2 cups cooked rigatte noodles - those placed in the slow cooker at the last hour. Cook on low for 6 to 8 hours.) The rest went into a stew for the Corgis.

Happy New Years!

Monday: Chicken Alfredo pasta, garlic bread

Tuesday: Bratwursts, baked potato bar

Wednesday: breakfast for dinner - pancakes, bacon, eggs

Thursday: Slow Cooker BBQ'd Beans & Sausage

Friday: appetizer night, cheese cubes, crackers, stuffed jalapenos, etc

Saturday: Bacon Cheeseburger Pasta

Sunday: recipe of the week

Tips For Putting Away Those Decorations

When I was a little girl, my mother would leave the Christmas tree and all the holiday decorations up until King's Day (January 6th). Nowadays, I usually have my decorations put away before New Year's. Chances are with the holidays falling on a weekend, you're probably starting to put away a few things too. Save yourself some hassle next Christmas - put your decorations away properly!

Start by putting everything away in an organized matter. Put the outdoor decorations away in one bin or box, the lights in another, and tree decorations in their own box. Be sure to label any bins or boxes that you can't easily see into. If you put up your outdoor lights on Thanksgiving weekend, but don't put the tree up until closer to Christmas, make sure that the lights box is on top of the tree ornaments box so you aren't moving boxes around so much to get to what you need.

Do you get depressed when you pull out the ornaments and find each year that one or two have been broken in storage? stop that from happening next year! Safely put away ornaments. Did you know that egg crates can be easily used to keep small fragile ornaments from being crushed? Empty tissue boxes can used to store small strands of lights or fragile longer ornaments. Save the tissue paper from gifts for wrapping ornaments and decorations that can be easily scratched. Stack these boxes and containers into a hard sided tote or bin for extra protection from being crushed. If you have thin garlands that can be easily tangled, slide them into a Ziploc bag (they even have the XL size bags for large garlands!) the beauty of these bags is that they can be used again and again each year if they are taken care of, and they will protect your decoration from any water or element damage while they are in storage. (Tree through the roof into the attic, anyone? It won't save them from being crushed by the tree if it lands exactly on them, but if there is rain coming in, it will help save them from that!)

Take a moment to go through your decorations as you are putting them away: is there something in the bottom of the box that has stayed there for several years and not been on display? Does it have no sentimental value? If not, then put it aside to be donated to Goodwill or other thrift shops. It's the end of the year, so it's the perfect time to get a little tax donation, and you'll have more room for the decorations you care about - packed too tightly, your ornaments can be more easily broken.

By the way, for those of you who live in a more rural area, and had a live, unflocked Christmas tree - put it up on Freecycle or Craigslist. Many folks with goats may want to snag your tree as a snack for their goats!

Charities That Need Your Help

In the spirit of the giving season, I have a few charities that have landed in my inbox the last few weeks, some of which are struggling to meet their year end goals. If you're looking for somewhere to help locally, don't forget your local food banks and animal shelters - even a few cans of food can help both.

TapMommies, HealthTap’s Beta community where pregnant women and new moms learn from professionals and from one another to make educated decisions about their health, has partnered with Stanford’s Lucille Packard Children’s Hospital and non-profit Help a Mother Out to launch a New Year’s diaper drive to raise both diapers and awareness about this need. The New Year is only a week away, but HealthTap is still thousands of diapers short of their goal of 10,000. There are two ways to help donate:

Via Online – HealthTap has set up an online registry to make it simple to send in diaper donations: http://www.diapers.com/baby-registry/68486/HealthTap-Palo-Alto

Via Mail – send in diaper donations to:

HealthTap
575 High Street, Suite 310
Palo Alto, CA 94301

All diapers will be distributed to Stanford’s Lucille Packard Children’s Hospital and donated to families in need.

In Dafur, thousands of women and young girls are attacked, raped, or even killed while collecting firewood to cook for their families, while two million people are killed by toxic stove smoke every year. World Food Programme is aiming to transform the lives of 20,000 women in Darfur by getting 20,000 people to chip in just $5. Your $5 gives women an unlikely weapon to protect themselves: a fuel-efficient stove that reduces the need for firewood. It fights hunger, saves lives, and protects the environment. If you're interested in helping women in Darfur, visit wfp.org/stove for more information and to donate.

Water.org is trying to raise awareness for their efforts to help fight the world’s leading health crisis – the lack of clean water and sanitation in developing countries. About 9,000 people die every day and over half are children. :( In order to help raise awareness, Water.org, co-founded by Matt Damon and Gary White, is selling limited-edition Camelbak water bottles this holiday season. These bottles are reusable, environmentally friendly, and 100% of the profits will go to support the one billion people suffering from the unsafe water crisis. (as a heads up, right now they are currently back ordered, thanks to the wonderful help from lots of folks wanting to help!)

Rabbit Haven, a wonderful shelter for bunnies located in Gig Harbor, is full to the brim with unwanted rabbits right now. They are in need of items to help take care of the rabbits, and you can view their wish list here. They are also accepting PayPal donations too.

Animal Rescue Families, a non-profit, volunteer staffed, no kill animal rescue organization, based in Bremerton is in need of baby blanket donations (they can be used, but clean) and donations of cat and dog food for low income families who are struggling to take care of their pets. (It will help keep the pets out of the shelther or abandoned on the street, too!) For more information, and to donate, check out their website.

Merry Christmas Y'all!

I was going to let my scheduled posts run, and then decided to just let it be! I'm off to have a family Wii Monopoly tournament here in a moment, and I hope you are spending quality time with your loved ones.

No matter what your beliefs are, I hope that today and tomorrow are wonderful days for you, that you are surrounded by those you love, and may the coming year bring wonderful things your way. Feliz Noche Buena y Feliz Navidad!

Happy Holidays!

I know a lot of you are extremely busy right now and probably won't be visiting my blog for a few days, so I wanted to wish you a quick Happy Holidays! I have a couple of posts scheduled to go up over the next few days so it won't get stale around here (and it gives you an excuse to slip away from the holiday insanity and visit me perhaps?). I do still have a couple of giveaways running, but I won't start any new ones until next week - hey, I need a break too! ;) I'll leave you with a bit of adorable Corgi cuteness:

Zombie Corgis want to eat all your Christmas cookies! ;)

Thrifty Thursday - Paying Cash

This week for my Thrifty Thursday post, I'm talking about paying cash in order to save money.

I am the worst one when it comes to paying cash for my purchases. Seriously, unless I keep a calculator going as I walk through the grocery store, I have no concept of what I am spending. Most of the time, I think I've spent XX amount, and I am WAY over. Not good! That's the problem with becoming so reliant on debit and credit cards. (I am guilty as charged!)

Dave Ramsey and others tout the cash envelope system for getting out of debt, but it can also save you money - not only from phantom purchases like above where you spend more than you mean to, without knowing it; but also from companies that will give you a discount for paying cash on the spot. Did you know that many small businesses have to pay not only a set fee for you using your debit or credit card, but a percentage of the sale price too? Asking if they will give you a discount if you pay for your purchase in cash could end up saving BOTH of you money!

However, NEVER pay cash for large purchases where you could have something go wrong. Always use a credit card if you have one, so you can fight if your purchase doesn't work right, or labor hasn't done properly.

Book Review: James Beard's American Cookery

I recently received a copy of the book, James Beard's American Cookery, with a foreword by Tom Colicchio, to review.

James Beard's American Cookery has been called "The Bible of American Cooking by "The King of Gourmets" in Time magazine, and it's safe to say they are correct on this one. James Beard is probably one of the best known authors of cookbooks; in his lifetime he penned over twenty different cookbooks, but none as famous as James Beard's American Cookery.

While I hesitate to call this a cooking Bible myself, it really is a bible for foodies. It contains over 800 pages worth of recipes - there are very few cookbooks this big out there. It contains recipe after recipe for just about any item you could find in your American pantry or freezer. While some of the recipes aren't exactly every day dinner fare - Grilled Pig's Feet, anyone? - there are many recipes in here that are perfect to make it to your menu plan.

One of the best parts about James Beard's American Cookery is that it goes into details about some of the items used in the recipes, as well as tips and tricks for making many of the dishes. While there are no pictures of the dishes included in this book, I'm not sure it's really needed - it would be almost like having pictures in a dictionary. Consider this cook book your textbook for American cooking. Sit down and just read though it; you'll learn a lot! Don't open it looking for just quick and easy semi-homemade fare however; this is the real deal. It's not to say that all the recipes are time consuming and you'll spend all day in the kitchen - but these recipes use real ingredients like spices and meats. Many have under 5-6 ingredients in the recipe, and are easy to follow along with.

If you can have just one cookbook in your collection, tJames Beard's American Cookery would definitely be a worthy choice of that honor.

James Beard's American Cookery is a hardcover cookbook published by Little, Brown and Company. It contains 877 pages, and the suggested retail price is $35.00. (Right now, Amazon has it for just $23.10 as of this posting, and it is available for the Kindle and other e-readers)

I received a copy of the book mentioned above in order to share my opinions.

Random Thoughts Tuesday... Didn't We JUST Do This?

randomtuesday

Loads of thanks to Waste Management, who were so loud today, I thought it was the apocalypse at 6:47 this morning. Seriously, I thought a car had just crashed into the house.

In 24 years of multiple viewing of Ferris Bueller's Day Off, I never noticed the Killing Joke banner until this past weekend.

I am so unobservant.

I keep thinking Friday is Christmas.

At least it's not raining at the moment.

I have an extremely bored Corgi staring me down at the moment. Like Garfield, bored, bored, bored... It's so funny, the difference between these two and Pudgy. Pudgy's idea of fun was heading down to get a latte, say hi to everyone and pick up the mail. These two want to head off into the woods and hike all day. Well, at least Captain does. The Diva would like to have her two hour siesta at mid-day in between hikes. ;)

The problem with stocking up on snacks is that DH blows right through them. Safeway had the Wheat Thins for $1 a box if you purchased 5, and I had $1 off 2 coupons... I bought like 10. Seriously, good deal! A box would last me and the kiddo a week... DH has discovered them and has gone through 3 boxes already! Geez! It's like trying to hide snacks from a teen! (and y'all wonder why I hide my chocolate around the house, lol)

I feel like I should start answering the cell phone, "Laundry service".

I will actually be glad when Christmas is over, because the rampant commercialism of gift giving drives me crazy. Gimme, gimme, gimme. Blah! Give throughout the year if you want to give gifts, and make it a surprise.

My Christmas cards arrived yesterday, so yes, some folks may actually get a card before Christmas. Will wonders never cease? ;)

DH wants to know why I never seem to be asked to review zombie related stuff. I just want to know, when my name is plastered all over here, why do I still get email addressed to Mrs. Housewife? What gives? I got one the other day addressed to Martha! Maybe I should start adding my name to the bottom of every post? *rolls eyes*

Is it 2011 yet? I'm ready to sweep this past year under the rug.

Yoplait Two Week Tune Up

Last week, I had the opportunity to sit in on a "Virtual Launch Event" for Yoplait's new Two Week Tune Up that they have going on. If one of your New Year's resolutions is to drop a few pounds, or you just need to drop off what you've gained this holiday season, a few of the tips and ideas they shared might help you out too. I already eat very similar for my breakfast and lunch... I just don't always eat a lower calorie yogurt since I buy based on what's on sale here.

The Two Week Tune Up is designed to help individuals lose weight over a two week period by replacing breakfast and lunch with a Yoplait Light yogurt, a grain & a fruit. You'll want to be eating a diet rich in lean protein and non-fat dairy including a sensible dinner, beverages and snacks, and of course, get your rear in gear by walking 30 to 40 minutes daily.

Yoplait Light has over 33 flavors to choose from, so you shouldn't get bored during those two weeks - but make sure you are choosing the Light flavors, and not the Original or Whipped since there's about a 100 calorie difference. It might not seem like much, but when you are trying to burn off those calories, it takes a lot of extra walking to burn off another 100! ;)

Check out Yoplait.com for more on this "diet".

And if you haven't already, head on over to Yoplait's page on Facebook, where you can sign up to receive a coupon for a free cup of yogurt!

I didn't receive anything for this post, and it's not an endorsement of this "diet". Speak with your healthcare professional before trying any new weight loss plan or fitness regime.

For Once, The Dogs Win

I feel badly for all parties involved, but I'm glad to see that cooler heads prevailed on this one.

Several weeks ago, a 10 year old boy trespassed onto a homeowners property to retrieve his ball that had gone over the fence, and was bitten by the homeowner's three large dogs. The kid really got it - I'm sure he's not only going to have physical scars for life, but a good set of emotional ones.

I know some of you are screaming that the dogs should have been put down, and I'm just happy because I'm an animal lover. Not so fast, let's be fair here:

The fence the kid climbed over was six feet tall. There were "No Trespassing" and "Beware of Dog" signs on the fence. The kid lived nearby, it's not like he didn't hear the dogs bark - and at 10, I'm sure he could read the signs. (If he can't... seriously, he shouldn't be unsupervised).

The licensed dogs were quarantined for 10 days as required by law to ensure that they were disease free and were returned to their owner last week.

Now speaking as someone who also has a six foot fence around her yard, as well as multiple "No trespassing" signs of her own up, and a "Dog on Premises" sign (the insurance company warned us that the Beware version could lead to a court case if anything did happen) - they are up because your feet better not be in my yard. We've had lost balls end up in our yard before, and the kids know to ask - once they even sat on the steps for an hour, poor kids, waiting for us to get home - so why couldn't this kid just knock on the door and ask too? Parenting FAIL.

I Am A Snail...

Or at least that's what I feel like. My motivation ran away! If I could spend all day today in bed, I think I would have.

I did scrub down my kitchen to get ready for Christmas - the turkey is thawing in the fridge now, and I am saying Hail Marys that we don't loose the power this time around. ;) Load number 3 is in the washer, the floor is mopped, so it's not like I've been sitting on the couch eating bonbons all day...

Though I wish I was. ;) I did get lucky yesterday when we were out - I had read on several blogs of folks asking for icing buckets from bakeries to store their bulk goods in. I was hesitant to ask, but yet the thought of paying shipping on food safe buckets was KILLING me. (I'm cheap, so what? lol) So I poked and prodded DH to ask at the grocery - we came home with two! They are drying out now after I scrubbed them down. Whoo hoo! When they are dry, I will split open my 25 pound bag of rice into them and then fill up my go-to container I keep in the kitchen. Next trip I'll see if they have any more, because they are the perfect size to store bunny chow in too.

I had planned to do some baking today, but I think I'd rather take advantage of DH being home today and vegetate on the sofa, getting caught up on reading blogs! Guilty as charged of being lazy. ;)

I hope you are having a wonderful weekend! I'll leave you with a photo of sleepy chicken Corgi... yes, he really fell asleep like that. lol ;)

Review: Ice Breakers Frost

I recently had the chance to try out new Ice Breakers Frost mints.

The Ice Breakers Frost mints come in two different flavors: Peppermint and Wintercool. These are new to the Ice Breakers line, and both are a sugar free candy. They have a flavor core coated with xylitol, and cooling and flavor crystals - this means that not only are you supposed to get a great taste, it's also supposed to help freshen your breath.

I was sent the Peppermint flavor, so I reeled in my test subject, my poor DH who some days really hates my blog. ;) I caught him before he brushed his teeth in the morning, so he definitely started off with rank breath. ;) He said the taste really did have a kind of cooling sensation, and that the peppermint taste was definitely strong. When he was done, I had him breathe on me.

I prepared to gag. (LOL, I'm not fond of mint smells, so I felt doomed with either outcome)

The smell on his breath actually wasn't completely overpowering, and definitely smelled a lot better than morning breath! ;) So if you are looking for a quick way to freshen your breath because you ran out of time to brush your teeth, this might help. I can't say it would work if lunch included a ton of garlic though - you might want to try half the container in that case! (kidding)

Ice Breakers Frost are available in 1.2 ounce plastic tins at your favorite store checkout lanes. They are just the right size to carry around in a purse or backpack, or even in a coat pocket. (The container looks like you could re-use it too... I'm thinking beads, maybe? Mini sewing kit in the purse? Ah, the wheels are a-turnin' with me! lol) If you are making care packages for the troops, this would make a great addition to the box!

I received a sample to share my thoughts of the product. All opinions are most definitely my own.

Review: Journals Unlimited

Life goes by so fast! Sometimes it can be hard to remember the important memories, and that's why many turn to diaries and journals. I think I was 7 when I received my first journal - now I have my blog! lol ;) Even with a diary or journal though, you can still get writer's block. You have what you want to say in your head, but it's just not making it's way to the paper.

Journals Unlimited has 60 different journal styles, each with guided prompts so you don't have to worry about writer's block. There is everything from vacation journals, to birthday journals, and daily thoughts too. I received the full size Christmas holiday journal in red, from the Color Collection.

It's a multi year journal that allows me to keep track of Christmas cards received and sent, recipes, where we spent the holiday at, and much more. I will be able to keep track of 25 years of Christmas's with it! It's beautiful to look at, and the spiral binding makes it easy to write in. At a retail price of just $18.95, I think it's a good deal as well. If you are looking for a great gift for a newly married couple, think about this one. I really wish I had known about it our first Christmas that we were married! (Think about it... they will be celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary when this book is filled! Isn't that neat?)

There are also journals available in the mini size that may be easier for traveling and for keeping in purses, etc. There is even one for keeping track of emails and websites! At just $5.95, that would be a great stocking stuffer, don't you think?

All of the "Write it Down" series is made here in the USA, in the company's home state of Michigan. The journals themselves are made of acid-free recycled paper, with soy based ink, so they are an environmentally friendly gift choice as well.

The last day for Christmas delivery is December 19th, so you still have a few days to grab a last minute gift if you're interested. If you sign up on their website, you'll receive promo codes and discounts throughout the year. (Mother's day gifts, anyone?) Right now if you plan on purchasing 3 or more items from their store, you can score free shipping using promo code holly10 at checkout.

I received a sample in order to share my thoughts. No other compensation was given.

Friday's Featured Etsy: Jewel Of The Lion

Welcome to my Friday's Featured post, in which I showcase Etsy stores and small businesses from folks like you and me. Recession, smession! ;)

Our stop on our this week's journey through Etsy land is a store called Jewel of the Lion.

Jewel of the Lion contains handmade jewelry and yummy baked goods. Yes, I said yummy baked goods - this week I am not responsible for any weight gained by purchasing from her store! ;) There is still time to purchase from her shop and have the gift arrive in time - Julie's cut off for Christmas delivery is midnight December 20th. Every item she sells is wrapped and ready for gift giving, free - it's included in the price.

Check out the scrumptious looking Strawberry CHEESECAKE With Graham Cracker Crust - 6 PIECES (over 1/2 pound)

Drooling yet? Let's go for the kill - look at the Julie's ROCKY ROAD - 12 Pieces (over 1 pound):

Okay, okay, enough food torture. ;) For those who are avoiding the calories, how about this pretty Purple Haze necklace? It ships free too, so hurry to snag it before anyone else does!

Food Storage Friday - Books & Goals

If you receive a gift card that's burning a hole in your pocket, or if someone is asking you what you'd like as a last minute gift - or maybe you're just looking for some new additions to add to your library list, here's a couple of great food storage titles that you should check out. Everything in these books won't apply to everyone, of course, but you can probably learn a few really important things reading them. (Click the pictures to get to Amazon's page for them)

Don't let the gloom and doom of this title fool you - it's got a lot of great information on food storage even if the world isn't ending. lol ;) I think it's probably the best food storage book there is.

Emergency Food Storage & Survival Handbook: Everything You Need to Know to Keep Your Family Safe in a Crisis by Peggy Layton

It's in the Bag a New Approach to Food Storage by Michelle and Trent Snow

OK, this one below is more recipes, but it has some awesome ideas, especially if you have some shelf space to have your mason jars. Seriously, you'll never buy packaged side dishes and stuff again (well, except maybe when they are free lol) and the best part is, you know exactly what's going into your mixes. The finished jars also make great gifts - so if you are still trying to make last minute handmade gifts, this title could help?

Dinner Is In The Jar: Quick and Easy Dinner Mixes in Mason Jars or Mylar Bags by Kathy Clark

My goal for 2011 is to expand my food storage. In order to do so, we're going to have to think out of the box more - you've seen my food storage area in past FSF posts, and our home isn't that big, so it's going to take a lot of creativity in order to do so. I'm also hoping to be able to do more canning this coming year, since this past one was a complete and utter bust! (Yes, I'm still mad the the person who switched the labels on those tomato plants I purchased!)

What are your food storage goals for 2011?

Book Review: Clinton St. Baking Company Cookbook: Breakfast, Brunch & Beyond from New York's Favorite Neighborhood Restaurant

I recently received a copy of the Clinton St. Baking Company Cookbook: Breakfast, Brunch & Beyond from New York's Favorite Neighborhood Restaurant by DeDe Lahman and Neil Kleinberg, to review.

The Clinton St. Baking Company Cookbook is written by the husband and wife team behind the famed New York restaurant best known for it's array of breakfact goodies. Don't let the title fool you, this isn't just food fit for morning meals, there are plenty of recipes for other meals too, from Maple Butter Roasted Squash Soup to crab Cake Sandwiches. There are also plenty of drool worthy dessert recipes, including a Coconut Lemon Curd Cake and Key Lime Meringue Pie. There are plenty of comfort food recipes in here too, from Fried Green Tomatoes to Buttermilk Fried Chicken. And if none of those catch your fancy, head over to page 145 where you will find the recipe for Grilled Wild Mushroom Goat Cheese Pizzas. I still need to find the truffle oil so I can try it exactly like the recipe runs (which is a rareity for me!) because I am sure there is a difference on this one. With over 100 recipes to choose from, this is one of those can't-go-wrong cookbooks to have on the shelf.

While not all of the recipes have photos, the cookbook has plenty of full color photos of plenty of the recipes. Many of the recipes are easy to follow along with, and there are hints and tips in the sidebars of some of them. Plenty of the recipes can be made by the beginner cook, and others can be easily adapted by what you have on hand - which to me is a must.

If you are on the hunt for a last minute hostess gift or a hard to please budding chef on your list, definitely consider picking Clinton St. Baking Company Cookbook up. It's almost like having an entire menu's worth of recipes from a restaurant in one book; there is sure to be a recipe that pleases everyone.

Clinton St. Baking Company Cookbook: Breakfast, Brunch & Beyond from New York's Favorite Neighborhood Restaurant by DeDe Lahman and Neil Kleinberg is a hardcover cook book published by Little Brown and Company. It contains 224 pages. The cover price is $29.99, but Amazon has it for $19.79 as of this posting.

I received a copy of this book in order to share my opinions of it. No other compensation was given.

Blog Tour: Time Saving Holiday Tips (Giveaway!)

MomCentral recently asked me if I was interested in joining in on the Bank of America blog tour. As a BoA customer, and someone who has learned the hard way with finances, I was happy to!

December is always the craziest month of the year for us - like it is for so many others. On top of the usual holiday insanity for my family, my DH is at work more covering for others who are taking their vacation time so they can visit their families in other parts of the US and even in other countries. (I can't complain on one hand, because we put the extra money towards finishing off our credit card debt!)

In the hustle and bustle, it's easy to forget something very important - your finances. I know, we don't like to think about the money we are spending buying those last minute gifts, or purchasing tickets to head on over to visit family. Oh, and don't forget the overpriced snacks at the airport or gas stations while traveling for the holiday... it's easy to forget what is in your checking account and accidentally overspend - or even worse, forget to pay a bill!

In fact, the only time I have ever messed up my bank account (this was pre-marriage) was during the crazy holiday season where I forgot to mark that I had paid extra on my BoA credit card bill... didn't balance my checkbook... and kapow! overdrawn checking on a $55 student loan payment. Oh, I was super mad at myself for that one! Luckily my overdraft fee was only $25 - some banks can be much higher as you know - and I quickly moved some money over that I had stashed in my PayPal account at the time and fixed the bleeding until next payday.

I learned very quickly that Internet banking was your friend. If you don't already, take a few minutes to acquaint yourself with the online banking options you bank has. You can save yourself from not only not having to make trips to the bank, but also from making an expensive mistake of your own! Here's a few time saving banking tips:

*Set up instant account alerts to your cell phone or email account. You can receive alerts that will tell you whenever you are in danger of over drafting your account, or whenever your account total goes below a certain amount. If you share an account with a teenager (or a husband that has no clue with money LOL!), did you know that most banks will send you an alert whenever they use their debit card? This can save you a major headache right there!

*Many banks, including Bank of America, have mobile apps now. Download the mobile banking app and you can check balances, transfer money, pay bills, and locate ATMs, all from the convenience of your smartphone or laptop. No standing in line, and you can even save yourself some expensive stamps on those bills. Plus if you are traveling, BoA's mobile app will tell you where all the local ATMs are, so you can locate one easily and avoid those high other bank ATM fees! (Cripes, they can cost $5+ these days - it's insanity!) If you don't have a smartphone, but have a basic phone with texting abilities, you can still sign up for text banking. Just send a quick text message to get your balance instantly in a reply - I can't tell you how often this has come in handy for us when we are doing our major stock up shopping trips. (I am so paranoid)

*If you are like me, and worry about finances all the time, using online bill pay is a lifesaver! I've mentioned before that my late night panic attacks all have to do with the same thing - me forgetting to pay an imaginary bill. It would be funny if it wasn't so stressful! (Of all the things, you know?) It's easy - and most of the time free, depending on your bank - to go into your account online and set up an automatic bill payment transfer every month. Unless you need a check to pay rent, most of your bills should be able to be paid online like this. Even if you are cutting is close funds wise, you can still set it up - you can always cancel a bill to be paid, or switch the scheduled date if you are waiting for funds to be deposited into your account. Just be sure to schedule the payment at least a day or two before the bill is due in order to avoid late fees by the company you are paying!

If you are looking for more tips to help you save your sanity and save yourself some time this season, check out www.bankofamerica.com/solutions. There's some great tips on there, many of which will also save you money while saving you time! (Did you know if you are flying, and you know you have to pay to check your bag, that if you pay it online, not only will you usually save money as it's usually cheaper, but you'll also save yourself the hassle of standing in line at the kiosk or desk to pay for it? It's just one of many great tips!)

Book Review: An Amish Love by Beth Wiseman, Kathleen Fuller, and Kelly Long

I recently received a copy of the book, An Amish Love by Beth Wiseman, Kathleen Fuller, and Kelly Long, to review.

An Amish Love actually contains three short "novellas" - one written by each author. Each story as the main title suggests, is set in Amish country with Amish characters.

A Marriage of the Heart is written by Kelly Long. This one is the story of Abigail Kauffman who tells a tall tale and is "forced" to marry a bewildered Joseph Lambert, who was just brought back into the community that day. Apparently Joseph was the lesser of evils, as she was trying to get away from her father and the empty home she lived in after her mother died... and Abigail has quite the stubborn streak. You can't help but feel sorry for Joseph, who at moments seems to be caught between two worlds, his Amish life, and things he learned and felt during the time he was away from the community. (I would have loved this story to have been expanded into a full length book!)

What The Heart Sees is written by Kathleen Fuller. This is the story of Ellie, who loses her sight in a tragic accident five years prior that had also taken the life of her best friend Caroline. Caroline's "boyfriend" ran away from the community, unable to cope. Upon his return, his father is furious with him, and when he goes to meet his sister, he ends up smacking into Ellie and nearly knocking her out cold. (Ouch!) Will sparks fly? You'll have to pick up the book to find out! ;)

Healing Hearts, the last of the stories, is written by Beth Wiseman. This one is about Levina and Naaman Lapp, who start the story off coming back together after Naaman left 11 months ago for a barn raising - but really, it was more of an excuse to get away from his wife. It seems Naaman was suffering from a combo of midlife crisis and empty nest syndrome. ;) Even though he is back, they need to fix their relationship and trust in God to help them mend the broken parts. It doesn't help that a sheriff is on the hunt for Naaman, and nasty rumors spread around town quickly.

If you enjoy Amish Romance books, you'll probably enjoy this new title. The three stories, while they have the common theme, are all different enough that they can appeal to different walks of life - and age ranges. Niftily, it also contains several recipes mentioned throughout the stories. It also contains a reading group guide.

An Amish Love by Beth Wiseman, Kathleen Fuller, and Kelly Long is a paperback Christian Romance Fiction book published by Thomas Nelson. It contains 391 pages. The suggested retail price is $14.99, but Amazon has it for $9.41 as of this posting.

I received a copy of this book in order to read it and share my opinions. No other compensation was given, and all opinions are my own, and not that of the publisher or authors.

We had to check them a month ago when one of them started going flat. We had to replace that one.

Congratulations everyone! You know the drill: emails are being sent and you have 48 hours to reply! (Whew! I can't believe how many giveaways I've hosted lately! Yay for my readers, but boy, checking and rechecking everything is a time consuming snoozefest! lol)

I Confess...

Um... I still haven't ordered my Christmas cards.

Happy New Years cards, anyone? Though... since I've only received two cards so far, one of which was from a PR company, I'm guessing I am not the only one slow this year.... right? I hope?

Review & Giveaway: YesterYear Soap

I recently had the chance to try out the handcrafted soap from YesterYear Soap Company.

YesterYear Soap Company makes natural, organic, and herbal soaps all in small batches, with fresh ingredients. They do not use any synthetic dyes or fragrances, and instead their soaps are scented with essential oils and colored with organic herbs and plant extracts only. This means not only are their soaps much more environmentally friendly than your average off the shelf mass marketed bar soap, it means it is much more gentle on your skin.

They sent me one of the grapefruit and mint soaps, and one of the Vanilla Strawberry bars. As you can see, all of their soaps are hand cut, so no two bars are cut alike:

When the package arrived, I could already smell a faint hint of fragrance - by the time I opened it up, I couldn't wait to take a shower using the Vanilla Strawberry! The smell is absolutely heavenly! This bar was made with olive oil, coconut oil, and soybean oil. I'm not new to the world of handcrafted soaps, and I can honestly tell you there's a difference between the mass market bars and hand crafted bars - the difference may be subtle depending on how sensitive your skin is to begin with, but once you start shedding the chemicals, your body will usually be much happier for it.

The scent of the grapefruit and mint bar is very refreshing - it's the perfect morning pick me up. My DH said he preferred the scent of this one over the vanilla strawberry to wake himself up. Now I've mentioned on my blog before that my DH is a scent fiend, and loves his bath products, so the fact that I FINALLY managed to get him to use a handcrafted bar was a major victory! lol

Each one of their roughly 3.5 oz bars retails for $4.99, and they have different scents to choose from if the ones I tried out aren't your thing. The soaps from YesterYear make perfect stocking stuffers, and right now they have $5 flat rate shipping on all orders under $100. If you join their mailing list, you will also be entered to win a free soap!

As a history geek who wants to see everything preserved, I also appreciate that this company took several historical cabins that were falling apart log by log, and then moved them to their property, reassembling them exactly as they once stood over 150 years ago. The soap that they make is created from the same recipes used over 100 years ago. (Remember, once upon a time, us housewives created our own soap for our families. It really has become a lost art!)

Win it! One lucky winner is going to win a prize from YesterYear Soap Company! To enter, check out YesterYear Soap Company, and tell us what you'd like to have under your tree this holiday season!

Random Thoughts Tuesday - Should I Be Building An Ark?

randomtuesday

Baked bunny. That's what I am feeling for dinner. lol He turned into psycho bunny earlier this morning and he's in time out right now. Every time I would start to fall back asleep, he'd wake me back up by throwing stuff off his top deck, dragging his food bowl around. It sounds funny, but trust me, behind that adorable bunny cuteness, there's a rotten side. ;)

We will have lived in Washington five years in March, and last night was only the third thunderstorm we've seen since we've been here. I miss them. I know, it sounds funny, I hate the rain but I love thunderstorms. But I swear there's a difference in the air after a thunderstorm vs a regular dreary downpour.

Judging by the two 30 pound shaking chickens we had in the bed with us last night, I will hate hurricane season back home. The Corgis were terrified!

Seriously, it's been so overcast the lights have been on all day here... again. Besides the fact that this is starting to become murder on my electric bill (it's a conspiracy! LOL!), it's depressing. I really understand why they call Seattle the suicide capital of the US - if you don't have the strength to combat it, you're doomed.

....and a torrential downpour of what sounds like freezing rain starts. Great. Lovely, just lovely.

....I wonder if those that live in the extreme cold and snow areas are semi safe from a zombie invasion. You know, because they'd freeze outside. Which makes me wonder, if you sprayed water on a slow zombie in below zero temps, would they freeze in place?

That still wouldn't make me want to move somewhere like that. For all my complaining about the rain in this post, believe me, I am incredibly thankful it isn't snow coming down. (shudders)

I am convinced all Diet Dr Pepper lovers are soda hoarders. Every time it goes on sale, I can go within an hour of the store opening, and the shelf is cleared out. What's up with that? (says the person who was planning to buy 10 LOL!)

I thought I had some luck yesterday at Grocery Outlet because my cart was actually full... and then we got home and I realized 90% of it was drinks for DH to take to work (they had a bunch of stuff 3/$1 and 2/$1) Phooey! Although, he used his debit card the other day at the gas station and I had a heart attack. I love him, but he has no concept of money. lol Hence, why the cart was filled up - I bought all that stuff for about two gas station trips by him. I think I liked it better when he didn't remember his PIN. (Is that bad of me? lol) And it's not like he didn't have a ton of snacks to choose from at home.

I am so tempted to just order pizza for dinner tonight.
