Thrifty Thursday - Winter Heating Tips
This week for my Thrifty Thursday post, I'm sharing a couple of tips to lower your utility bill in the Winter (and even Summer!) months.
Most windows and doors are the biggest energy leaks in your home. Even newer built homes can be guilty of wasting energy, by allowing your warmer (or colder) air to leak out. Be sure to close the draperies, or mini-blinds in all your rooms before going to bed each night. If there are rooms in your home that aren't being used, close the shades or blinds even during the day to help stop the air from going out.
For doors, consider insulating against drafts by using a draft stopped - you might remember these in your Mom's home as a kid. It's just a long cloth tube filled with stuffing placed against the bottom of the doorway. You can do your own "hack" by simply rolling an old towel up and placing it securly against the door. If you have an older home where vents are only in certain rooms, consider blocking them off at night like this as well - after all, who needs to heat the hallways when you are sleeping? (A caveat - watch that the home doesn't get so cold that pipes freeze if you do this!)
