Review & Giveaway: Calming Collars

Sometimes when you rescue a pet, you end up with behavioral problems that should have been addressed by the former owners, but for whatever reason, wasn't. And sometimes, the behavioral problems appear as a result of the trauma from being rescued. That's kind of what happened with Captain - he has separation anxiety. We just get the feeling that he's so afraid he'll end up back where he was before. (Not going to happen - ever!) Captain follows me everywhere - I don't even get a shower without him waiting outside the bathtub. For the most part, it doesn't bother me, but I feel bad for the little guy. :(

Now, we don't really get thunderstorms out here in this part of Washington - they are very rare here - but a few months back we had quite the doozy of one. The Corgis completely freaked out and we had two 30 pound chicken nuggets shaking in bed with us the entire storm. I know many dogs are also afraid of them, as well as afraid of fireworks, car travel, etc. It's hard seeing your furkid suffer! (How many cats flip out at the trip to the vet? All four of mine!)

Calming Collars are based on aromatherapy and are created to help overcome stress and anxiety naturally for your dog or cat. I knew this sounded like something perfect to help Captain out a bit. Each collar is custom made specifically for your pet, and you can even choose which cotton fabric pattern you'd like the collar to be created in! We chose the Jolly Roger print with skulls and crossbones like a pirate flag, since it nearly matched his halter and leash set we use a lot. (Don't worry, if that's not your thing, they have some lovely prints, including dog bones! I think there's just about something for all pets)

When the collar arrived, my mailbox smelled all pretty. LOL! I knew what the package was before I even opened it - it's not that it was that strong, but I could definitely smell it a little. Upon opening it, I was completely surprised at how thick the collar was with the herbs! I was expecting a thin padding with just a little herbs! The clasp was very sturdy, and easy to click shut. (Note: this collar is made to be decorational - do not attach a tie out or leash to this collar as it will not hold up!)

Now let me give you a bit of a warning - the smell after you remove the collar from it's plastic bag (to keep the herbs fresh) is quite strong to most dogs. After all, they have a stronger sense of smell than us humans do. Captain started sneezing immediately after I tried to put it on him - I kind of forgot his allergies (oops!) My suggestion is that you keep the collar near where they are for about an hour - either by their bed or wherever they are - so that they can get used to the smell and aren't overwhelmed. It also will allow you to see if they might be allergic to the herbs too. Luckily, the sneezing subsided with Tucker after I did this, and he was able to wear it with no problems.

It was awfully cute on him - in fact, it looks like a little bowtie! lol I can't say I noticed that much of a change in Captain and his separation anxiety, but maybe that's just Captain - he's my high strung, velcro Corgi. We haven't had any other thunderstorms so I could put it to the test then. He does smell awfully pretty though, and it's kind of calming - for ME! LOL I love the smell of it! As you can maybe see in the photos, his is about 2" wide - you can have them made a little thinner if you'd like.

The Grumpy Princess wanted to model for you too. She's usually the super model around here, so she was feeling a little left out. LOL

One note: after you take the collar off, the smell lingers on their fur for awhile.

The Calm Me Down collar retails for $32 plus shipping. Now for some, this may seem a little high, but there was a ton of herbs in Captain's collar, and I've paid more for collars in the past, so it didn't bother me.

By the way, they even have collars for helping with motion sickness, and to help your pet stay cool during the hot summer months! If you are over on Facebook, be sure to "like" Calming Collars for new product announcements and specials!

Win it! Thanks to Calming Collars, one lucky reader will win a Calm Me Down collar for their cat or dog, in their choice of fabric print and size. To enter, head on over to their fabric page, and let us know what pattern you'd choose if you won, and if this would be for a cat or dog. Oh your Corgi look so sweet! Thanks for sharing!
I believe our Corgi would benefit from such a collar (he is very nervous in the car). How about the Canine Chronicles fabric for us?
Hugs to the pooch!
P.S. Have you heard about the First Corgi of California?

I think I'd have to go with Doggie Blues for my Schipperke. She has problems with fireworks and thunder so kinda the normal stuff but she's been freaking out and more clingy than usual for no apparent reason recently so maybe this'll help.

The Hot Pink Scroll! My Mali loves pink and she is so pretty in it. I mean Beagles just love to be a pretty pampered princess in pink!
Mali was in an abusive house before I got her. She has been my princess for 3 1/2 years now but still has PTSD. If anyone in the house yells she runs to me and cowers shaking and looking terrified. WHen she has had an accident and made a wet spot she yelps like she has been beat. I love my princess and think this would do wonders for her!

Love the pics! Cute pups! I'm pretty sure I need one for my boxer Ozzy (he'd look cute in bones & hearts) and then I need one for myself because we both have seperation anxiety from each other. Wish he could go everywhere w/ me. Like the grocery store, shopping, etc. He is my dude. (i do favor him some b/c he's my baby boy) Don't get me wrong tho... our other mutts are spoiled too!

Lumpy would look so handsome in the sage scrolls! I rescued Lumpy from my local animal control. He was only about six months old and had already been horribly abused. He is terrified of thunderstorms, fireworks and bags. He has horrible separation anxiety. He shared a kennel with his sister, Essie Mae, who was a rescued Pit Bull. She bravely fought lymphoma for 18 months before we had to help her to the Bridge. We all miss her so much. We have tried Clomipramine, Elavil and holistic supplements to no avail. We just started him on Prozac. I hate having to give him medication. :(
Thank you so much!

My dog and I would lvoe the turquoise on brown pattern. She was rescued from a breeder, so she gets nervous easily and it seems like this would help.

Please enter me in the 4 Calming Collars giveaway that end on March 5, 2011.
If I am a winner I would like the Bones on Tan color in Medium for our beagle/basset Eragon who we got from the shelter 3 years ago when he was 9 months old. As he is getting older he is becoming more up set with storms and of course fireworks.

Mary I. Burr
mburr@quarles.com
I think it is a brilliant idea and I know our dog Eragon will think so also.

I like the Canine Chronicles fabric. This would go to my dog Babba-Loo if I won. He was rescued from an abusive home and is very skittish and scared of storms and getting in the car. This may be a big help.

I'd pick hot pink for my cat, Kitty. She is having behavioral problems right now. I believe she's had it for years when we rescued her. She is very agitated and I'd love to see if this would help her some! Thanks!
