DVD Review: The Backyardigans: We Arrrr Pirates!

My family and I recently received a copy of the new animated Nickelodeon DVD The Backyardigans: We Arrrr Pirates! to review.

The Backyardigans: We Arrrr Pirates! contains four episodes with a pirates and medieval theme: "Pirate Camp", "Pirate Treasure", "Sinbad Sails Alone", and "The Tale of the Not-so-Nice Dragon" (which ended up being our favorite episode on the DVD, even though you know we love our pirates around here!) In "Pirate Camp", Uniqua and Pablo are being trained at yes, you guessed it - Pirate Camp. Just when they were learning the most, Tasha the ghost kidnaps Captain Austin! Oh no! Can they save him? In "The Tale of the Not-so-Nice Dragon", King Pablo and his mighty knights have been taken away by the dragon. Now Tasha the Flighty Fairy and Austin the Grabbing Goblin must make their way to rescue them.

If you're new to The Backyardigans, this animated series features five neighbors - Tasha, Tyrone, Pablo, Uniqua, and Austin - who meet in their backyards, and each episode has a different music theme. On this DVD, you'll hear garage-band music (lol), reggae, and mambo.

I'm actually pretty pleased to see that the episodes are all pretty close to the title theme on this one - lately it seems there is always at least one or two episodes included on these kids DVDs that just don't belong (it's like the game... one of these things don't belong! lol) Alright, so the dragon episode isn't 100% pirate-y, but it's in the vein at least. The more episodes I view alongside the kiddo of this show, the more I like it - I love the imagination emphasis!

There are no special features on this disc - phooey. Some sing-alongs, please? Especially since most of these episodes have previously come out on DVD! I love the fact that having DVDs allows me to skip through any commercials being shown in our home, but it would always be nice to have a little something extra for everyone else that the kids don't already see when they view the show on the TV. Give us an extra reason to buy the DVD when there's a slew of kids titles hitting the market!

The Backyardigans: We Arrrr Pirates! will be released this Tuesday, March 8th, 2010. Full screen format, it's not rated and safe for all ages, with no questionable content (ages 2-5 will enjoy it the most, however). It has a total running time of 98 minutes. The suggested retail price is $16.99, but Amazon has it available on pre-order for $11.99 as of this posting. (Netflix users: this title is currently listed with release date unknown. Add it to your queue to get first notice of when it's available)

You know the drill: I received a copy of this DVD in order to share my thoughts on it. All opinions are my own, all links are for your convenience - they are not referral links.
