If you have 'tweens, chances are you've heard the buzz around this new Disney sensation. It's actually based on a book by the same name, and the movie aired last month in April over on the Disney Channel. Five high school freshmen meet in detention (*cough* sound familiar? haha) and end up forming a band together. It doesn't come together quite that easily, of course, bring on the teenage angst - it turns out the principal moved all extracurricular activities to the basement of the school to make room for a new gymnasium. The kids are helping out, cleaning up the music room, and start messing around with some of the instruments. The teacher in charge of detention just happens to also be the music teacher, and she tells them they have potential as a band. Not all of the teens are on board with the idea, but Stella (who is played by Hayley Kiyoko) ropes the rest of the group into it by signing them up to perform at the Halloween Bash!
A coin is tossed after much debate, and the band begins. The only problem? They need a name! Sure, they end up with the name "Lemonade Mouth" - but you'll just have to watch the movie to find out exactly how that name came about. ;) Plenty more happens in the movie, including a rash of bad luck for all of the members, and a new member joins the band - as well as more lemonade. Yes, there's a protest about the school's lemonade being removed from the school (which doesn't turn out so well for the teens), and more tie-in's with lemonade.
The two disc Extended Edition contains an exclusive extended performance of the ong "Livin' On A High Wire", as well as a totally fun "Rock-Along" version of the movie - all the lyrics to the songs appear on the screen so the kids can sing along with the movie! (all ten original songs!) The set includes both the DVD as well as a digital copy for viewing on the go.
The movie is rated G, and suitable for the 'tween crowd as well as the younger teens. (Probably the 7 to 12 crowd would be the core audience, but it's safe for a little younger to view alongside their older siblings!)
From my point of view as an adult and a mother, it's nice to see kids having a positive movie where they can see that they can stand up for what they believe in, and most importantly, can do whatever they put their minds to.
The DVD disc contains Fast Play, which is a navigation utility that automatically starts the disc as soon as it's put in the player and pretty much remembers your viewing preferences. So if you have a kiddo that likes to play a certain scene over... and over... this comes in handy since it remembers that. ;) This title also qualifies as part of the Disney Movie Rewards program, so be sure to enter the code inside the box to get your reward points.
Lemonade Mouth: Two Disc Extended Edition will hit the streets this coming Tuesday, May 24th, 2011. Widescreen format, it is rated G, and has a total running time of 107 minutes long. The suggested retail price is $26.99, but Amazon has it available on pre-order for $16.99 as of this posting. (Netflix users: this title will be available to add to your DVD queue, but it is not currently available for instant viewing.)
I received a copy of this DVD in order to share my thoughts on it. All opinions are my own.
