May Gardening

Well, phooey! I cut the grass last Sunday, and it's already a jungle in the backyard - I hope that means my apple tree will have a good start for the year. Well, it's only part of the yard - the other half is just assorted weeds and sandy dirt. I would like to give up on that half of the yard and do maybe some rock landscaping, but I just hate to waste potential green-ness. (and it's not like it would be that playfriendly, either) I think I might do the area near the shed, and then a walkway towards the house, with landscaping bricks. Of course, I need to get lucky with some leftovers on Craigslist/Freecycle, or else win a good Lowe's giftcard to do it, lol.

My seedlings this year have totally BOMBED. The trays all look like this:

Granted, a good batch of them really were expiraments - some I tried recycled dirt, some were seeds that were several years old, and I tried a batch from the Dollar Tree. Bummer! The only one that are starting to sprout are the Heirloom Lily Miller seeds I bought - and at the cost of them, I sure expect them to sprout! lol I know it's been cold, and not much sun, so my poor greenhouse just hasn't had a lot of loving.

I was so depressed about those seedlings, that last trip to Lowe's I snagged two of the tomato plants that were on sale 2/$1. They look a little depressed themselves though:

I'm hoping they will perk up when I repot them tomorrow. I took a cutting of a blackberry plant, potted it to see if it would take off, and that seems to be hanging on:

Yeah, it was another expireiment, lol. It's kind of fun to play and see what might happen. Even if takes off, I doubt I'll see any fruit on it this year, but it would be nice to have them next year. I have one rogue blackberry plant at the front of the house inside my lilac bush, but I barely ended up with half a cup of blackberries last year.

My basil hasn't grown at all, but the chives are doing great. My strawberry plant and one of my patches of onions are taking off with a bang though:

Actually, I took that picture two days ago, and thanks to the sun yesterday afternoon, the strawberries look even better today. It's supposed to hit 60 again tomorrow with plenty of sun, so hopefully that will help the rest of my plants grow a little more. I am tempted to go pick up a few more plants though just to be sure there are more fresh veggies coming in here.

How's your garden going?

Mike McGrath does a gardening show (You Bet Your Garden) on our local public radio station. His website has lots of tips for gardening. Try this website: http://www.whyy.org/91FM/ybyg/index.html
Go to the A-Z Garden Answers tab (under S, obviously) and you'll find a bunch of info on seed starting. I think it will help you out, as I can see you're doing some things he advises against. Be forewarned, by the way, that he has a weird sense of humor, which comes through in his writing. But he seems to know what he's talking about. I think you'll have better success if you follow his advice.

PS: read about tomatoes, too. They don't like cold weather; they're tropical plants.

My seed starts look about the same as yours! Zero, Zilch, Nada...then again I did plant them WAY too early and then forget to water them for a couple weeks......I got a load of strawberry plants from a friend and they seem to be doing OK so far.

Last year I bought a pepper plant that didn't grow AT ALL, literally several weeks later it was the same size as a couple of tomato plants I had started from seeds a couple weeks before I bought it.

catnap: Oh, I took the seedlings & tomatoes to get some sun - I'm not leaving them out there! They'd be toast, it was 27 the other night I believe! lol I'll check out his website though and see what advice he has.

Ruth: it's frustrating, isn't it? At least we are blessed to be able to learn what works and what doesn't in days we don't need our garden to live off like they did 100 years ago!

Yup. There was a guy last fall on a gardening forum I posted on at the time who said if he had had to rely on his garden for food that summer he would've starved to death!
