Beanfields are bean and rice chips that are corn and gluten free, a better choice for those on the hunt for a crunchy snack. They are a family owned company that uses non GMO crops to make their chips, which they had me at hello with that one. They are farmed and happily made here in our beautiful USA, so you are supporting homegrown jobs with this one. Each one ounce serving has 4 grams of complete protein and 4 grams of protein! Sounds healthy, right? And they are on a roll - the FDA has a list of the 8 most common ingredients that trigger food allergies, and none of the items on this list are on the ingredients lists of Beanfields products.
You can't tell me that it's not sounding like a great snack, right? (Actually, it almost sounds too good to be true when I type it out, LOL) Beanfields sent us on over a bag of the Sea Salt variety and one of the Pico De Gallo:
Here's a close up of the Pico:
Seriously, it looks like most other chips! So how do they taste? Crispy, just like any other chip, but there is a definite difference between your traditional corn chip and a bean and rice chip, of course. Don't go into it thinking it's going to taste like your cheese covered corn chip, because it won't - simply because Beanfields doesn't use all of the chemicals you can't pronounce in their product. (Pick up any old store brand of flavored tortilla chip and look at the ingredients list - you probaly have never heard of half of the ingredients used in it!) The first ingredient in these chips are Navy Beans, followed by black beans, and long grain rice. Usually by the time you get to the third ingredient, it's follow by a form of HFCS, which I don't see on the ingredients list in any form on this one. You can also taste the beans in these!
I'll admit the three of us blew through the bag in a matter of minutes. (The bags contain 6 servings with 140 calories each serving)
Now the sea salt variety, if you like sea salt chips, you may enjoy these more than we did. We're just not that fond of salt-y flavored snacks (cheese and BBQ flavors tend to be purchased more here), so after the first one was kind of upturned by my DH, I ended up serving them with salsa (store bought, alas, until the tomato plants kick in!), and this way wasn't so bad. I'll probably end up sticking with purchasing the Pico De Gallo variety in the future as I rotate it into our snack buying cycle. Beanfields chips are also available in Sea Salt & Pepper, as well as a Naturally Unsalted variety perfect for those on a low sodium diet.
You can purchase Beanfields chips online (it's $40 for a case of 12 bags, plus shipping and handling), or be sure to keep an eye out in your local grocery store and they are starting to make their way onto the shelves.
Please note I received product in order to share my thoughts on it. All opinions are my own, and your tastes may differ from mine.
