Spy Kids is a live action film that follows the Cortez family. Once upon a time, Gregorio and Ingrid were ultra secret top spies, living the life of danger at every turn. Then one day, they walked away from it all, wanting to become parents. It's been quiet over the years - well, as quiet as being a parent can be ;) - but suddenly, nine years later, they are called into action for a super secret mission. Their two children, Carmen and Juni, have no idea of their past and are staying with Uncle Felix. While on the mission, their parents are captured by an evil man named Fegan Floop, who just happens to be in charge of Juni's favorite TV show. When Floop's minions - or rather Thumb-Thumbs as they are called - come after Carmen and Juni, Uncle Felix tells the kids the truth about their parents. Now, it's up to the kids to become super spies themselves and save their parents!
Did I mention the yummy Antonio Banderas happens to be the dad in this movie? That combined with the presence of Danny Trejo as Machete (which would begin the character and lead to the movie of the same name) made this film a must have for my family! The movie is full of other big names, including Cheech Marin, Teri Hatcher, and even George Clooney makes an appearance. There are plenty of big special effects too so you know this is a movie they put some effort into. While there are scary moments and some minor violence, the movie is geared towards the 7 and up crowd.
This new Blu-Ray release of the movie, ten years after the original release, contains two discs - the second disc is a digital copy that you can use to upload to all of your portable devices.
There is some bonus content on disc one, including several trailers, a cool makeup effects featurette, stunts Spy Kids style, a clip on "Growing Up Spy Kids", the "Robert Rodriguez Ten Minute Film School", and the "Ten Minute Cooking School".
Spy Kids is a two disc Blu-Ray set that is available at your favorite DVD store. Widescreen format, it is rated PG, and has a total running time of 91 minutes long. The suggested retail price is $19.99, but Amazon has it available for $9.49 as of this posting.
I received a copy of this DVD in order to share my thoughts on it. All opinions are my own.
