Did you know this is the 30th anniversary of The Fox & The Hound being released? In celebration, Disney has released both The Fox & The Hound - digitally restored - and The Fox & The Hound II together in one package for our families to enjoy!
The Fox & The Hound is the story of Tod, a young fox who is taken in by a caring old woman after his momma was killed, thanks in part to some of the animals in the forest. He, like any young pup, is quite the handful! He ends up befriending Copper, a young hunting coondog, but the friendship comes to a bittersweet end when Copper is tied up after his owner gets frustrated with his wandering off to play. As the story progresses, they become bitter enemies until the end, when Tod ends up saving Copper's life from a bear - and Copper ends up saving Tod's life from his hunting owner.
You know, I hadn't watched The Fox & The Hound in probably at least 20 years, and I was shocked at how sad it was at times. (Sob!) I didn't remember it being like that - or as scary as it seemed at a few places! I was worried about my daughter, but she didn't even blink an eye. She was in love with Tod and now she wants a fox. lol
The set also contains The Fox & The Hound II, which I had never seen before. This one was a direct to DVD "sequel", where Tod and Copper wander off to visit the fair, where they see a "band" performing - when one of the members stomps off stage, Copper jumps up and starts singing. He's in as a replacement - as long as he promises he's a stray. (which he isn't!) Tod is jealous when Copper spends more time with the band and forgets about him, so he hatches a plan with Dixie to get Copper out of the band. When he's tossed, they end up forgiving each other the next day, and turn around and hatch a plan to get the band - with the real members - back together. There's a lot more music in this one. It's cute, and it seemed to be a bit of a different tone than the first movie.
Watching the Blu-Ray I definitely knew there was a difference in the picture, even if it has been a long time! The picture was amazing, and getting to watch it on the big screen with the surround sound - wow kids today are way more spoiled than we ever were! lol
The set is another one of the awesome "Combo Packs"! While they cost just about $10 more than just buying the regular DVD, you end up saving money in the long run because you won't have to re-buy the same title in the Blu-Ray format down the road if you don't already have a Blu-Ray player or PlayStation 3. Plus, if you have a computer/laptop with DVD playing capability or portable DVD players, you can play the regular DVD disk on those. And if like us, you have the whole HDTV set up going, it does make for a great movie night at home! The disc also feature Disney Fast Play, where the DVD will start immediately upon placing it in your DVD player, no remote or button pushing necessary.
The three discs also contain different bonus features. Disc 1, which is the Blu-Ray disc with both movies on it, has a short feature called "Unlikely Friends", which talks about some of the different friendships between different animals in the wild animal kingdom. Disc 2, is the regular DVD version of The Fox & The Hound, and this one contains a bonus featurette: "Passing The Baton: The Making of The Fox and the Hound", as well as a sing-a-long "The Best Of Friends". Disc 3 contains the regular DVD version of The Fox & The Hound II, along with a behind the scenes featurette called "The Making Of The Music" and a music video performed by Lucas Grabeel called "You Know I Will".
This title also qualifies as part of the Disney Movie Rewards program, so be sure to enter the code inside the box to get your reward points. You can also receive 50 bonus points for entering this code, and the one from Mars Need Moms, which is releasing the same day. If you are interested in purchasing this title for your home movie collection, there is a printable coupon currently available that will save you $5 off the The Fox And The Hound combo pack. It expires August 14,2011, so be sure to hurry up and use it if you're planning to!
