DVD Review: Hey Arnold! Season 1

My family and I recently received a copy of one of the newest titles released from the Nickelodeon archives, Hey Arnold! Season One, to review.

Hey Arnold! aired back in the last 90's/early 00's, and followed Arnold, your average fourth grader who lived with his grandparents in Hillwood, and his friends. He has to deal with a bully - who actually kind of has a crush on him lol - and he helps friends get out of trouble as well as his own tricky situations he gets into. You can easily tell by the drawings almost that it came out in the 90's time frame where Nickelodeon had a bunch of great shows - they all have this similar kind of animation vibe to them. I'd peg this series as more for the 7-8 and up crowd - while there really isn't any violence or bad language, it's just your average pre-tween story lines with a bit of slapstick humor here and there.

Hey Arnold! Season One contains all 20 animated episodes from season one - which really contain two "stories" each episode. There are four disc in total. Once again, there are no special features included - which is a shame, really. Maybe when these "classic" titles get released on Blu-Ray, we'll start to see some bonus material included.

Now I never really viewed this show the first go round when it aired, but DH did, and he just loved this show. He was all excited when the announcement was made that they would be releasing it on DVD (well, it was previously available, but as a direct "burn" - which meant the picture quality wasn't always all that great). There are plenty of parts to make you giggle, but there are other Nickelodeon shows that I personally found more entertaining myself. (Angry Beavers, anyone?)

Hey Arnold! Season One is available now at your favorite DVD store. Full screen edition, it is not rated (see above). The total running time across four discs is 7.5 hours. The suggested retail price is $29.93, but Amazon has it available for $20.49 as of this posting. (Netflix users: most of the entire Hey Arnold! series is currently available for instant streaming)

I received a copy of this DVD in order to view it and share my thoughts on it. All opinions are my own.
