OK Enough Of That...

Grocery shopping. Once upon a time I used to love it. It was fun to go with my coupons and see what I could get for cheap. Maybe I just went at better times of the day, or maybe it's just a sign of the way things are going... but I can't bear the grocery stores any more. The people are rude, they run you over, and making sure my coupons are done right by the checkout clerks are just too much of a hassle.

I'm finding myself buying more and more in bulk - partly because then I don't have to make so many trips to the grocery store, and partly because I am watching more and more what we eat. Everything seems so processed and so unhealthy! Don't get me wrong, I still pick up a bag of Doritos here and there, but looking at labels gives me a headache. I see other people's carts and I just CRINGE. I was at the Dollar Tree last week, and the woman in line purchased $50 worth of candy. Alright, maybe she's just stocking up for awhile. Then she pulled out food stamps to pay for it, and it took all I had not to keep my mouth shut. Good grief, I hope that's not all she's feeding her children!!!

I was flipping through a stack of my cookbooks last night trying to menu plan and I found myself getting frustrated because so many of the recipes used convenience foods as a stepping stone. It's not a huge deal, but I was trying to find new ones that basically just used food storage items. Then I went looking for a new pizza crust recipe to try, just to mix things up, and most of the recipes that I tried looking at all used boxed pizza mixes or pre-made crusts! *bangs head against wall* I was starting to feel like the only person in the world who bakes from scratch! lol

So I went to do a major stock up today, and half the shelves were bare. I guess everyone else had the same idea as I did - even the restaurant supply store was empty on half of the stuff I had planned to purchase! Back to the drawing board on menu planning for this week. I ended up making a pizza for dinner, lol.

Are you finding yourself heading back to basics more and more? Or am I just crazy? ;)

I definitely do most of our cooking from scratch. I get upset when I see people buying mostly frozen dinners and other pre-made items. What is frustrating is that groceries continue to get more expensive as inflation continues at a ridiculous rate. Aside from basic staples like flour and rice, most things aren't cheap. But it's still much cheaper and healthier to cook at home from scratch. So I do.

I have definitely gone back to basics, especially in the past few months. I am a teacher and so I am off during the summer. The combination of both my money and my clothes being tight made me rethink how I grocery shop and plan meals. I realized that my LACK of planning caused me to eat more convenience food. I committed to both myself and my husband to bring my lunch most days once works starts again.

What I hate? That often the healthier foods cost less. In the end, it does not because it wreaks havoc on your health, but wallet-wise it seems cheaper.

I spent thirty years on the road eating in restaurants every day. Now I'm home, and doing most of the cooking, from scratch. It's a learning curve, and a few mistakes. But I've never felt better. Even losing weight. I've been looking at the junk they put in the foods we buy,and convinced scratch is the only way to go.

The majority of my cooking is from scratch, partly because I like it better, and partly because of diet restrictions. It's a bit of a shame because so many of the good cooking magazines have such a huge selection of pre mix recipes, it's not worth getting the magazine anymore.:(

I did a shopping yesterday, and when I got home realized I forgot to have them scan my customer card! GRRR I hate when that happens...usually the cashier asks for my card, this one didn't. Most of the stuff I got was on sale, several things BOGO, etc...next time I'm there I'm going to stop at the customer service desk to see if they can scan the card and put it through on the order so I can get the savings that didn't go through w/o the card.

I am for sure a cook from scratcher! lol, huh? the pre-made pizza crust thing bothers me too.. It is so easy to make your own! And you know what you are putting in it! Not to mention - it is so cheap! we love pizza night around here!
