Did you know that it's estimated that worldwide 1 in 100 people could suffer from Schizophrenia? Ben Behind His Voices is the story of Ben, who when you first meet him in the beginning of the book, seems like you average kid. Everything has changed though, by the time he is a teen, and his life has spun out of control. Before they get a diagnosis and a treatment plan, Ben runs away and is homeless at times, has seven psychotic breaks and seven hospitalizations.
His mother, actress Randye Kaye, tells Ben's story, and shows the up and down ride that she as a mother has gone through to help her beloved son. She doesn't sugarcoat episodes; she says it like it was. Schizophrenia can be a hard disease to understand - not only for those looking in, but for caregivers and those diagnosed too. Ms. Kaye helps others understand this disease a little better with Ben Behind His Voices. I'll be honest, I really didn't know much about Schizophrenia when I started reading this book, so I did learn a lot. There are lots of chapter guideposts to help the reader understand the disease. As a mother myself, I really can't even begin to imagine how hard this journey had to be for her.
Ben Behind His Voices: One Family's Journey From The Chaos Of Schizophrenia To Hope by Randye Kaye is a biography/health hardcover book published by Rowman & Littlefield Publishers. It is 320 pages long. The suggested cover price is $26.95, but Amazon has it available for $17.99 as of this posting. It is also available as an e-book for the Kindle and other e-readers.
I received a copy of this book in order to read it and share my thoughts on it. All opinions are my own, and not that of the author(s) or publisher.
