Review: TruMoo

The school year is starting up, and that means school lunches are upon us. It can be hard to come up with packable or purchasable items for kids - there are some really great choices out there, and then there are some really bad ones. With the obesity epidemic as bad as it is, us parents really need to pay attention to what our kids are eating - both at home and at school. One of the ingredients we try to avoid in our home is High Fructose Corn Syrup, so I was happy to hear that Dean Foods – known for its 35 regional dairy brands across the country – is launching TruMoo.

TruMoo is a chocolate milk beverage made with white milk, and it's high fructose corn syrup free, using sugar instead. The lowfat and fat-free varieties contain 15 to 20 percent less added sugar and 10 to 15 fewer calories than the previous chocolate milk formula they used, making it a healthier choice. The milk is produced from cows that doesn't receive artificial growth hormones, and it still has nine essential nutrients growing kids need.

I usually avoid purchasing chocolate - or any other flavored milk - for my family due to all the extra added junk, so I was curious to check out TruMoo. They sent on over a gift package that included several bottles of TruMoo. Sure enough, the 1% Lowfat Milk is HFCS free. I did still spot artificial flavor as part of the cocoa ingredients on the label though (less than 1%), so if you are watching your consumption of that as part of your family's diet, you might want to steer clear.

Taste-wise, both DH and my daughter gave it two thumbs up. They were both thrilled to have a treat they don't normally get I think. LOL The bottles we received are 8 flo oz, so they are just the perfect serving size, and they fit easily into DH's lunch to take to work. They are 150 calories, so it wasn't much more than a glass of juice and still a much healthier choice than some of the sugary drinks you can pack for kid's lunches. Of course, it's not shelf stable, so you would need to add an ice pack to your child's lunch if you were sending this with them to school.

Now TruMoo is made under regional dairies (like Land O Lakes and Knudsen), so some attributes such as varieties available may vary, but other flavors available include strawberry, vanilla and coffee. TruMoo is available in gallons, half gallons, quarts and single serve bottles. TruMoo milk is also offered in school and food service settings in half-pint containers, so be on the lookout at your child's cafeteria to purchase them there. (It saves you the headache of the ice pack!) I haven't stepped into a regular grocery store since this arrived to check the retail price, but I am sure it's on par with other lunch friendly drinks. If this is a product your household is interested in, keep your eyes peeled for sales! You can also visit the TruMoo website and check to see if there are any coupons available in your area.

I received a gift package with samples in order for my family to try this product out and share my thoughts on it. All opinions are my own.
